Make Ahead
The sloppy joe mixture can be made 24 hours in advance and refrigerated until needed. Microwave it to warm before placing on top of the garlic bread.
Ingredients
Ground Beef– I use 85 to 90% lean ground beef. Ground turkey or ground chicken can be substituted. Make it vegetarian by using Beyond Meat.
Onion– sweet, yellow, or white work well.
Ketchup– works great as a base for sloppy joes.
Dijon Mustard– adds a little tang. Spicy mustard or yellow mustard can be used instead.
Light Brown Sugar– adds some sweetness. Dark brown sugar can be used instead.
Worcestershire Sauce– adds saltiness and flavor. Can use soy sauce as a subsitute.
Garlic Powder– 1 medium minced garlic clove can be substituted.
Chili Powder
Black Pepper
Texas Toast Garlic Bread– Texas Toast is thick and sturdy and holds up well with sloppy joe mixture piled on top.
Mozzarella Cheese– can substitute with Colby Jack or Pepper Jack.
