Long-form, grand strategy games like Civilization and Stellaris lend you enormous power over entire societies, but they’re sometimes lacking in urgency. Planning, scheming, gradually accruing resources and soldiers – the complexity is enjoyable, but I like a bit of pressure, the immediacy and chaos that comes from Command and Conquer, XCOM, and the other RTS stalwarts. It’s been 18 years since the last Commandos game, but now the classic stealth tactics series is making a valiant and much-needed return. Seemingly ignoring the experiment that was Strike Force, the new Commandos feels much closer to Men of Courage and Destination Berlin.
