Shaboozey Fans Flood Comments Of Cody Johnson’s Producer Demanding Apology For CMA Awards Joke
Getting his Shaboozey kicked in the comments.
One of the most viral moments from the 2024 CMA Awards came not from the performances, but from a joke made by Cody Johnson's producer, Trent Willmon, while he was on stage with CoJo accepting the Album of the Year award for their 2023 album, Leather.
After Cody spoke, he turned the mic over to his producer, who made a joke that appeared to throw some shade at New Artist of the Year nominee Shaboozey:
“It takes an army of people to make a great record, but I gotta tell ya, this is for this cowboy who’s been kicking Shaboozey for a lot of years.”

Social media erupted after the comment, with many wondering whether he was trying to make a joke about kicking “Shabooty” or whether it was a dig at the artist’s pop-leaning sound.

Willmon hasn't said anything else about the comment, so we don't know exactly what he meant or what he was going for, but my assumption is that it was probably just a joke that didn't land like he thought it would.
Either way, the "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" singer addressed the remark on social media after the show, seeming to be unbothered by the comment:

His fans, on the other hand...well, they're not happy.
Willmon hasn't posted to Instagram since November 12 when he posted about a songwriter's event in Nashville the next day. But that hasn't stopped angry Shaboozey fans from flooding the comments of his most recent post to call him out for his joke and demand an apology:
"What has Shaboozey done to you or Cody personally? Your comment was really miserable and it is a shame to see you using your voice to try to belittle someone else's work to uplift yours."
"Bet you wouldn’t say it to his face!"
"You could’ve expressed excitement for your and Cody’s achievements without dissing a fellow nominee…classless"
"Ain’t nobody kicking Shaboozy last time I checked Billboard"
"Out of all the fellow nominees to disrespect, you chose Shaboozey. We know why. I’ve finally realized that your obsession with us is primarily based on fear and envy."
"Imagine winning and still feeling the need to mention another. That only means you didn't think you deserved it either. You owe him an apology. No need to try to put out his light to shine!"
"The fact that you had to kick someone down while basking in success shows the vile and disrespectful attitude that you have. Just sad"
"Trash speech last night…"
"You showed a complete lack of class. It’s small-minded and unprofessional to make such a comment about another artist."
"You are part of the problem with the CMAs - learn something"

The post is already up to 535 comments, with most (if not all) of them being from Shaboozey fans angry about his comment. And Rolling Stone even posted an article yesterday arguing that the CMA Awards and Willmon owe Shaboozey an apology for the jokes about his name, not only from Willmon but from the hosts during their monologue.
I guess everybody's going to have to apologize to Jelly Roll too for making fun of his name?
