Mystery Drones Continue to Hover Over U.K. Military Bases

The U.S. Air Force (USAF) reported on Tuesday that more drones had been sighted near bases used by U.S. forces in the United Kingdom. However, the drones have not been identified as hostile. “We can confirm there were sightings yesterday (Monday) during nighttime hours,” a spokesperson for the USAF in Europe said in a statement shared by the 100th Air Refueling Wing at RAF Mildenhall in eastern England. The spokesperson added that the number of drones varied and fluctuated between the bases throughout the night. The drones have been intermittently spotted at three bases since November 20: RAF Mildenhall, RAF Lakenheath, and RAF Feltwell. According to a previous statement from the USAF, “small unmanned aerial systems were spotted in the vicinity of and over Royal Air Force Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall and RAF Feltwell between Nov. 20 and Nov. 24.” These drones differ in size and design. The USAF clarified on Tuesday that the drones have not disrupted residents or infrastructure at the bases and reiterated that they “have not been identified as hostile.” Nevertheless, the drones are “continuously being monitored to ensure the safety and security of the installation.” A USAF spokesperson told CBS News, “I can confirm the situation is still ongoing, and our units continue to monitor the airspace and are working with host-nation authorities and mission partners to ensure the safety of base personnel, facilities, and assets.” The UK’s Ministry of Defense said it takes “threats seriously” and is supporting the USAF’s response. According to BBC News, about 60 British troops have been deployed to the bases to help the U.S. identify the source of the drones. While no specific country or group has been identified as responsible for the drones, several U.S. adversaries, including Russia and Iran, have been accused of increasing espionage and sabotage activities in Europe this year. And yet, no one can explain who is flying drones over such critical military sites. Isn’t it strange?
