Producer paid for study showing controversial climate chemical for dairy cows is safe
Published 2024-12-02
The feed supplement Bovaer, which is given to dairy cows to reduce their climate impact, does not pose a health risk. This is confirmed by Arla's press manager Max Wallenberg and doctor of veterinary medicine Henrik Christensen. But the study which states that the feed supplement is safe has been paid for by the producer DSM itself.
- There is no cause for concern, says Henrik Christensen to Samnytt.
3-Nitrooxypropanol, also known under the product brand Bovaer . That's the name of a chemical that has been given as a feed supplement to dairy cows in a number of countries for the past three years. The reason is that the burping and farting of cows is seen as a threat to the climate.
- Although dairy cows contribute a great many positive things, such as above all food and open landscapes and biological diversity, they also contribute with their belches, Arla's press manager Max Wallenberg tells Samnytt and continues:
- They simply release methane gas. Bovaer and other methane-reducing feed supplements can be a way to reduce climate emissions on farms. That is why we are looking at how to use Bovaer in milk production.
