UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, 50, was shot Wednesday morning outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan in an apparent targeted attack. Thompson arrived at the hotel early for a conference when a masked assailant allegedly waiting for him shot him and fled. According to the New York Post, Thompson was fatally shot in the chest and pronounced dead at Mt. Sinai Hospital. “The masked man, who had a grey backpack on, then fled into a nearby alley. Thompson was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead,” Collin Rugg wrote. “UnitedHealthGroup was scheduled to start its annual Investor Conference at 8 a.m. Wednesday, according to the company,” News 8 reported, Rugg noted. The conference was abruptly called off due to “a very serious medical situation” with one of its team members, Witty said in a statement. Officials said no arrests have been made yet and that the investigation is ongoing. The suspect was described as a white male wearing a cream-colored jacket, black face mask, and black and white sneakers. Officials said he was carrying a gray backpack. Witnesses told The Post the suspect had been spotted near the vicinity of the hotel, on 6th Avenue, milling around. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing, the NYPD said. Police are expected to provide a briefing on the incident later this morning. CNN has reached out to UnitedHealthcare for comment. Thompson was named chief executive officer for UnitedHealthcare in April 2021. UnitedHealthcare is part of UnitedHealth Group, ranked fifth in the Fortune 500, according to the company. WATCH:
