Riley Green And Zach Top Team Up For Medley Including “Mama Tried,” “Time Marches On” & More
What a pair.
Last night, Riley Green performed at the Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort, which is part of the NFR (National Finals Rodeo) that's currently going on in Las Vegas.
During his set, he brought out a few guests, including Zach Top, who the crowd was especially excited to see. They played several songs in what was a medley of sorts, including Tracy Lawrence's "Time Marches On" and Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried."
Of course, "Mama Tried" was written and recorded by Merle and his band, The Strangers, the song became his fifth #1 single in 1968, when it peaked at #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. It's an all-time classic, and one Riley covers at pretty much every show.
"Time Marches On" was written by Bobby Braddock, released as the second single from Tracy's Time Marches On album in 1996. It spent three weeks at #1 on the Billboard country charts in mid-1996, becoming the longest-lasting #1 hit of his career. Additionally, it received a Single of the Year nomination from the Country Music Association in 1996, and well as a Song of the Year nomination for both 1996 and 1997.
Riley and Zach are two of the most down the middle, true country artists in the mainstream right now, and I really hope they'll team up in an official capacity for an original song one day because they sound so great together and have such similar styles:

They also performed Toby Keith's "Should’ve Been a Cowboy," which is one they've done several times together before. That was Toby's debut single, and peaked at #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Song chart in 1993. The song has more than three million spins on country radio too, which makes it the most-played country song of the 1990’s (and rightfully so).
I could listen to this all day long... check it out:
