How a Chatty Motorist Led to One of the Biggest Finds in Greek Archaeology–the Lost 2,800-year-old Temple of Artemis

From the magazine of the Archaeological Institute of America comes the story of an immense discovery 120 years in the making. One of ancient Greece’s most hallowed sites has been found thanks to a determined Swiss archaeologist, a chatty local, and the stroke of luck that brought them together. The story begins with Strabo, the […] The post How a Chatty Motorist Led to One of the Biggest Finds in Greek Archaeology–the Lost 2,800-year-old Temple of Artemis appeared first on Good News Network.

Penn Law’s Inflection Point for ‘Elite’ Higher Education’s Intolerance

Higher education has been a cesspool of anti-Americanism, censorious leftism, and cultural radicalism for longer than I have been alive. The moral rot is, and always has been, particularly acute at Ivy League or otherwise putatively “elite” institutions. The pro-Hamas “protests” that have rocked university campuses since Oct. 7 are indicative: One cannot help but realize that the jihadi anarchy on display at Harvard Yard hasn’t been replicated at red-state public schools, such as Alabama or Ole Miss. But every so often, something happens at an “elite” university that manages to shock our already jaded consciences. For instance, there was the triumvirate of “elite” university presidents who testified before Congress last December that the permissibility of campus calls for the genocide of the Jewish people “depends on the context.” There was also Judge Kyle Duncan’s March 2023 struggle session at Stanford Law School, where a baying left-wing mob—egged on by then-“DEI” Dean Tirien Steinbach—prevented the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals jurist from delivering his remarks. But perhaps the single biggest disgrace to rock academia in recent years has been the University of Pennsylvania’s yearslong crusade against one of its own tenured law professors, Amy Wax. In 2017, Wax coauthored an op-ed in The Philadelphia Inquirer that lamented the decline of traditional bourgeoisie values across American society and suggested this decline is blameworthy for many of America’s present social maladies. Almost immediately, 4,000 people signed a petition calling for Wax’s ouster; 33 of her Penn Law colleagues also condemned her instantaneously. Wax, a vocal critic of mass migration and skeptic of multiculturalism, admirably refused to be silenced. She ruffled more feathers when she observed that, in her two decades of teaching experience, Black students rarely finish in the top half of graduating law school classes. Statistics, it seems, are racist. For 2-1/2 years, a period spanning successive Penn Law deanships, Wax has been subject to a probe into her alleged “wrongthink” and misdeeds. The investigation has depleted valuable funds that Penn Law could have used to foster free speech or—how’s this for an idea?—actually train students to practice law. The probe has been exorbitantly expensive, forcing Wax to retain counsel; thankfully, a GoFundMe legal defense fund for the embattled professor has raised nearly $200,000 since its July 2022 launch. The witch hunt, as Aaron Sibarium observed for the Washington Free Beacon, has also “made Penn a pariah among academic freedom advocates.” The judgment finally came this week: Penn Law suspended Wax for a year, reduced her pay for that year by 50%, permanently stripped her of her endowed chair and summer pay, and publicly reprimanded her. Interestingly, as Sibarium scooped, Penn Law had previously offered Wax a settlement that would have lessened her penalty on the condition that she not “disparage the University,” not sue Penn, and not publicly disclose the exculpatory evidence she had presented during the yearslong probe. Translation: Shut your mouth, and this problem will go away quickly. Chairman Mao would have nodded right along. Penn Law, in the most recent version of the oft-cited U.S. News & World Report law school rankings, is tied for fourth place. High-achieving law school applicants (rightly or wrongly) seek to enroll there, and high-end law firms (rightly or wrongly) seek to recruit from there. When such an institution allocates immense time and resources to punish and humiliate one of its own faculty members, the goal is clear: to send a message. In this particular case, the message could not be clearer: You must bend the knee. Wokeism, unlike the liberalism of old, brooks no dissent. Free inquiry must yield to the stifling intellectual conformity that leftists delude themselves into thinking is “progress.” On the substance of Wax’s comments, to merely speak of race-based outcomes and speculate as to the underlying social phenomena that might have affected those outcomes is verboten. Anyone who does not toe the line, condemn America as a bastion of “systemic racism,” and endorse everything from reparations to race-conscious admissions practices is, in turn, deemed a racist him/herself. To call this spectacle “Orwellian” would risk understatement. The Amy Wax struggle session ought to be an inflection point in our higher education wars. College students should stop applying to Penn Law. Employers—from law firms to individual judges—should stop hiring from there as well. And Congress should pass a new law placing a hard condition on the disbursement of higher education funding: No private university that punishes a tenured professor for engaging in First Amendment-protected speech will receive a single penny in public funding. Wax is vowing to fight on. Perhaps she will sue Penn Law. Perhaps she will prevail in that suit. But as is so often the case, the process is the real punishment. And the indignity is the whole point. ‘Ballot Makers’: Dinesh D’Souza’s Film Exposes New Potentional Election Fraud

Paper ballots can be manufactured and purchased by those intent on election fraud, according to experts interviewed by commentator Dinesh D’Souza in his new documentary film “Vindicating Trump.” D’Souza, an author and filmmaker, said this form of election fraud surprised even former President Donald Trump, the subject of the film.   “A lot of times people, Trump included, will say, ‘The solution to our problems is paper ballots,’” D’Souza told The Daily Signal’s president and executive editor, Rob Bluey, in an interview. “But we discovered in the film, and through the film, there’s a vulnerability even with the paper ballots, and the vulnerability is that ballots can in fact be made.”  Footage in D’Souza’s documentary suggests a ballot or multiple ballots may be purchased and duplicated, a new form of fraud. The documentary itself focuses on Trump.  BREAKING: This exclusive clip points to a shocking new form of election fraud: Ballot making!Details in #VindicatingTrump which opens THIS WEEKEND in theaters nationwide!Get tickets now at https://t.co/edvlgU9pXp pic.twitter.com/mjFw7PozlY— Dinesh D'Souza (@DineshDSouza) September 26, 2024 “We have a section in the film called ‘The Ballot Makers,’ and I brought this to the attention of [Trump daughter-in-law] Laura Trump, because of her role as co-chair of the RNC,” D’Souza said, referring to the Republican National Committee. “I also mentioned it to Trump, because what this is really is a way of saying that, ‘Look, there are vulnerabilities in our system, there are ways of robbing Fort Knox.’” “And we don’t just have to think about the ways that they’ve already done it, we’ve got to think about the ways that they could do it in the future, because you can’t always cheat the same way. You need to be constantly improvising in your cheating techniques,” he said.  Although the option of producing fake paper ballots is available to potential fraudsters, exposing it should make it more difficult, D’Souza said.  “We exposed this kind of new potential form of cheating, and the purpose of exposing is that when you expose something in a film and people know about it, you then can’t do it,” the filmmaker said.  “So if I say, for example, ‘You can rob the store. They left the back door open.’ But by me saying that, and people now finding out about it, it becomes harder to show up at the back door, because at the very least, even if the back door isn’t locked, there are people looking for that, and you can’t get away with it anymore,” he added. Backyard Beekeeping | How to Turn Your Backyard into a Bee Haven

Have you ever considered turning your backyard into a bee haven? There are so many fantastic benefits of making your outdoor living space more bee-friendly. Check out these ideas to start your own backyard beekeeping! Backyard Beekeeping | How to Turn Your Backyard into a Bee Haven On October 31st, seven native Hawaiian bees were added to the endangered species list. After years of warnings from various environmental and animal groups, the alarming decline of the bee population is finally being acknowledged in a real, and terrifying way. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, bees pollinate 80% of our flowering crops — which comprises a third of everything we eat. They’re responsible for the continued survival of many of our most precious native plants. Yet, despite being an absolutely vital component of our ecosystem, we still engage in a lot of the behaviors that have led to their diminishing population. Unfortunately — as is so often the case — it’ll take time before the government catches up with the rest of us. It will be a while before they take action to protect all bees that make their home in the US. Until then, you can play a small (but very important) role in saving the bees by transforming your yard into a safe harbor. Here’s how: Backyard Beekeeping 101 Offer Plenty of Food Luckily for us, bee food primarily comes in the form of flowers — allowing you to help the bees and boost curb appeal at the same time. Here are some tips on planting the kind of flowers our sweet pollinating friends love best. Different bees are active at various points of the year, making it important to plant a wide array of flowers that bloom from early spring through late fall. Native wildflowers (either annual or perennial) are the best source pollen and nectar for bees. Bees are most attracted to blue, purple, and yellow flowers with flat or shallow blossoms where pollen and nectar are easily accessible. Since bees frequently return to clearly visible flower beds, plant large groups of like flowers, rather than a variety of flowers spread in a wide area. Provide a Water Supply All creatures need water, including bees. While native bees simply drink the water, honeybees use it to cool the hive and dilute honey. One of the best ways to attract bees to your yard is to give them a safe and accessible water supply. Here are a few ways to do so: Fill a bucket or pail with water, and float a generous amount of wine corks on the surface to create landing pad so bees can drink their fill without drowning. Fill a shallow bird bath with water and flat stones for perching. Put a frisbee full of clean rocks underneath an outside faucet. Turn the faucet on so it drips once per minute. Buy a few bags of decorative glass pebbles and put them in a large, shallow container. Fill it with fresh water daily and place it near your garden. Bees almost never store water — they drink it or bring to the hive as needed. It’s vital you continuously provide them with fresh water, refreshing buckets and birdbaths every day, or every other day. Give Them a Cozy Home Most bees don’t live in hives and colonies — they’re solitary wanderers who make their own homes. You can help them out by creating a safe nesting habitat in your yard. Wood and cavity nesting bees lay their eggs in reeds, old beetle tunnels, and similar locations. They’re opportunistic and will happily use man-made nests as well. You can purchase bee houses from your local garden supply store. Another option is to create your own at home by drilling holes into wooden blocks, logs, or by binding together hollow reeds. Place your nests where they are sheltered from the worst of the weather, and where the holes get morning sun. Ground nesting bees need bare patches of gently compacted earth in which to excavate brood chambers. Choose a site that is well drained and receives a decent amount of sun. Level or slightly slope sites will attract different species of native bees, so it’s a good idea to create a few different spots to maximize nesting potential. Bumblebees live in small colonies, and as such, their nesting boxes will need to be a bit larger. You can view a tutorial on how to build a bumblebee nesting box here. Place your nest in partial or full shade, on or just under the ground, where there’s no risk of flooding. General Rule of Thumb Finally — and most importantly — it’s absolutely imperative that you do not use pesticides in your yard. While they will certainly take care of any nasty pests you don’t want around, they will also kill the bees. Instead, take advantage of beneficial insects such as ladybugs, hoverflies, lacewings, and parasitic wasps. You can plant an insectary to attract them, or buy them from local garden supply stores for natural and safe backyard beekeeping.  While creating a habitat in our yards is just a small part in ensuring the safety of the bees and their continued survival, it’s still incredibly important. Even small steps can make a big difference! Discover everything a beginner beekeeper needs to start producing honey! Did you like our post on Backyard Beekeeping? Column: When Reporters Are Just Explainers, Not Investigators

The Left used to pressure reporters trying to be objective by insulting them as “stenographers to power.” You can’t just repeat what the powerful say, they argued. You have to expose them. Well, some of them. We remember all of the lectures during the Trump presidency that all their anti-Trump aggression was just “holding him accountable.” Holding Democrats accountable isn’t really their bag. You don’t win Pulitzer Prizes for damaging Democrats. That’s not landing on the “right side of history.” With Democrats, it’s apparently dangerous to explore if they might be failing. It’s better to just repeat their spin. That’s what stood out on “The NPR Politics Podcast” on September 23. It was short – only 11 minutes. The title? “How Kamala Harris incorporates her biography into her campaign message.” NPR White House reporter Tamara Keith claimed to be struck by Kamala hammering on her middle-class childhood.  “She said, ‘I come from the middle class. I'll never forget that I came from the middle class.’ She also talks, as you say, about having a single mother, immigrant parents,” Keith relayed. “She is placing herself in the American story in a way that I think is authentic to her, but also meant to maximize who she appeals to.” It’s amusing that Kamala’s middle-class mantra is “authentic to her.” She doesn’t come across as authentic when she unloads this speech every single time she’s asked about an economic policy. Worse yet, Keith touted how her campaign sources explain she uses this humble-upbringing line as a contrast with the silver spoon in Trump’s mouth. Keith even repeated Harris’s claim that she worked at McDonald’s one summer in her college years. Reporters at the Washington Free Beacon tracked down a 1987 job application that insisted applicants should list all jobs held in the last ten years. Harris didn’t have McDonald’s on hers. They also found there’s no record of Harris mentioning the McDonald’s job before a labor rally in Las Vegas in June 2019. The job goes unmentioned in both of her memoirs, published in July 2010 and January 2019. NPR reporters aren’t investigating this. They merely repeat her life story without investigating it, just as they did for Barack Obama. Nobody investigated his memoirs. They just repeated his tales in admiring tones. NPR political analyst Domenico Montanaro was impressed with Harris not harping on her gender or race too much, calling it “probably a strong, safe strategy, which makes a lot of sense.” But he said early on, he felt if Harris entered the race, “Trump and Republicans would really struggle in talking about a black woman. And we've seen that play out repeatedly, where it really has sort of become a trap for them.” So they not only explain the Harris strategy, they praise it, and insist Republicans can’t handle a black woman. Your tax dollars at work. The podcast ended with NPR reporter Deepa Shivaram throwing racism and sexism into the mix to explain why Harris doesn’t harp on her race or gender: “This isn't something that she feels like she does have to explain to anyone, let alone the media and largely, like, white reporters who feel the need to ask about this over and over again....We should point out, Donald Trump does not face these questions, and candidates who are white and male don't face these questions either.” No, they face questions about being a racist and sexist who “really struggles in talking about a black woman.” This is why NPR liberals are more excited about Harris’s chances than they were about Biden’s.

‘Best advice from a celebrity’: LGBTQ star Chappell Roan won’t endorse Kamala Harris

Celebrities like Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lawrence, and Hayley Williams of the band Paramore wasted no time endorsing Kamala Harris and citing her views on “reproductive rights” as a reason. Yet one celebrity known for her leftist beliefs has shockingly refused to endorse the vice president: LGBTQ activist Chappell Roan. “She is like a big old lib and LGBTQ advocate; she’s gay herself, and she dresses in drag as a woman,” Allie Beth Stuckey of “Relatable” explains, noting that Roan is also “very sacrilegious.” Now, Roan’s fans are allegedly angry with her for refusing to endorse Harris — but she doesn’t seem to care. “I have so many issues with our government in every way. There are so many things that I would want to change, so I don’t feel pressured to endorse someone. There’s problems on both sides. I encourage people to use your critical thinking skills, use your vote, vote small, vote for what’s going on in your city,” Roan told the Guardian in an interview. Stuckey is impressed. “That actually might be the best advice that I have heard from a celebrity, a liberal celebrity. Typically this is conservative-coded language,” she says, explaining that this type of response usually comes from “someone who doesn’t want to say that they’re voting for Trump.” “But she’s not,” she continues, adding that Roan’s call to focus on local elections is “absolutely right.” “We shouldn’t care this much about who’s running for president. It should matter a lot more what’s going on on the local level.” Want more from Allie Beth Stuckey? To enjoy more of Allie’s upbeat and in-depth coverage of culture, news, and theology from a Christian, conservative perspective, subscribe to BlazeTV — the largest multi-platform network of voices who love America, defend the Constitution, and live the American dream.

Trump security, sniper teams show heavy presence in NYC during meeting with Ukraine's Zelenskyy

The presence of Secret Service snipers was abundantly clear in Manhattan as Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at Trump Tower.Trump's command of the press room made most of the headlines on Friday, however on-the-ground footage from large outlets and independent photographers showed an increase in Secret Service presence that has clearly been needed since the first attempt on Trump's life."Under heavy security, Zelensky arrives for meeting with Donald Trump in NY," Brazilian outlet Metropoles wrote on X. The outlet's footage showed a sniper team on top of the Gucci store marquee next to Trump Tower.A single sniper was also shown across the street about 30-40 feet up on another landing.Secret Service agents were pictured on the ground in front of Trump Tower, alongside several NYPD units crowding the street with barriers and concealed white tents.Another page showed at least one other sniper team inspecting nearby buildings with binoculars. Following Trump nearly being killed with a sniper's bullet in Butler, Pennsylvania, it was revealed that Secret Service command had repeatedly denied requests by Trump's security team for extra personnel at his public appearances. According to the Guardian, this included requests for more security equipment and agents to screen rally attendees.A recent report from the BBC estimated about 80 security personnel are likely assigned to Trump at any one time. This is in contrast to a sitting president and vice president, who have about 300 personnel assigned to them. These totals reportedly include all staff, meaning they are not all agents.'It takes two to tango.' Trump and Zelenskyy enter Trump TowerPhoto by Alex Kent/Getty ImagesTrump's public messages with President Zelenskyy were consistently asking for peace in the region. He stated that he and Zelenskyy "have a good relationship" but added that he also has a "very good relationship with President Putin.”In front of press members, Zelenskyy asserted, "I hope we have more good relations with us." "It takes two to tango," Trump replied, referring to both sides of the Russia-Ukraine war.In another message to reporters, the two politicians stated that the war in Europe "should have never happened."Trump commended Ukraine's "great weather" along with its structures and "great everything" that may never be achieved again due to the death and destruction.Zelenskyy concluded by asking Trump to visit his military installations in Ukraine.Like Blaze News?
