Fact check: Allred gets called out on border policies

A Texas Democrat running for U.S. Senate is under scrutiny for his claims about border security. Similar to Senate Democrats claiming to support border security, including distancing themselves from Biden-Harris administration policies, U.S. Rep. Collin Allred, D-Dallas, who’s challenging incumbent U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, says he will secure the border. In a recent campaign ad, Allred says, “I’m working with both parties to finally secure the border, to add more border...

Vance cherry-picks data to claim 81% murder spike amid Haitian migrant influx in Springfield, Ohio

The campaign cited data showing from 2021 to 2023, murders in Springfield, Ohio, rose from five to nine. That’s an 80% increase.  A crime data expert cautioned against making annual comparisons in places where less than one homicide is reported each month, noting that homicides would be considered too rare to draw conclusions.  FBI homicide data also showed that the number of homicides in Springfield fluctuated without a clear trend from 2012 to 2022.

They paid their debts to society. Nebraska still might not let them vote.

“It gets to the very fundamental nature of democracy,” says Danielle Jefferis, an assistant professor at the University of Nebraska College of Law. “Who has a right to cast a ballot?” The Nebraska case weighs the redemptive power that the right to vote can have on those who’ve lost it, with the principle that voting rights come with responsibility to protect the integrity of elections. Thousands of Nebraskans with felony convictions could be denied voting rights under an opinion now under...

California AG sues ExxonMobil over plastic waste in landmark filing

"Only 5% of single-use plastic is recycled in the U.S.," according to the AG. In a first-of-its-kind lawsuit, California Attorney General Rob Bonta and a coalition of environmental nonprofit groups are suing ExxonMobil for the company's alleged role in the global plastics pollution crisis.
