A “Mini-Moon” Will Be Orbiting Earth For Two Months

Selenophiles unite. Something very cool is coming. Not sure what a selenophile is? No problem, it just means someone who loves the moon, and those who do are in for a treat. According to Space.com, Earth will get a second moon for about two months when a small asteroid begins to orbit the planet. This mini-moon will be around from September 29 to November 25. An Expert Gave A Detailed Mini-Moon Explanation Universidad Complutense de Madrid professor Carlos de la Fuente Marcos explained the mini-moon to Space.com. “The object that is going to pay us a visit belongs to the Arjuna asteroid belt, a secondary asteroid belt made of space rocks that follow orbits very similar to that of Earth at an average distance to the sun of about 93 million miles (150 million kilometers). Objects in the Arjuna asteroid belt are part of the near-Earth object population of asteroids and comets.” We won’t be able to see it with the naked eye on Earth, but Carlos said it will be a pretty spectacular sight with the proper equipment. “You may say that if a true satellite is like a customer buying goods inside a store, objects like 2024 PT5 are window shoppers. BREAKING : Earth will temporarily have a mini-moon for two months On Sept. 29 an asteroid known as a ‘mini-moon’ is expected to make a single orbit around Earth and leave on Nov. 25th pic.twitter.com/JYEWXbdqXv— Latest in space (@latestinspace) September 18, 2024 The latest in Space posted about the mini-moon on X and some people are excited. Like this person, “Awww…Could Earth adopt it? So cute!” And this one. “Oh sweet heaven! An early birthday present for me.” There were plenty of questions. “Really? Is there a more in-depth explanation, and can telescopes see it?” Scientist Chetan G had an answer. “The asteroid will be gravitationally bound to Earth for about 53 days, during which it will not complete a full orbit around the planet. This phenomenon is classified as a temporarily captured flyby. Due to its small size and low brightness (absolute magnitude of approximately 27.593), it will be challenging to observe with standard telescopes. A telescope with a diameter of at least 30 inches will be necessary for professional astronomers to detect it. After its brief stay, 2024 PT5 is expected to return to its heliocentric orbit and may approach Earth again in January 2025 and 2055.” You can find the source of this story’s featured image here. New Olivia Newton-John Duet Released Two Years After Her Death, Listen

When Olivia Newton-John died from cancer in 2022, the world lost an iconic voice. Whether she was singing You’re the One That I Want from Grease or a hit pop song like Physical, her voice was unlike any other artist’s. She charmed fans for decades, and her passing broke many hearts. Fans of the late star’s music are in for a treat as a new song, My Dream, is set to be released on September 20. Jim Brickman Shared The Good News About Olivia Newton-John’s “My Dream” Jim, who was not just a collaborator but also a good friend of Olivia’s, told People that Olivia Newton John’s song, My Dream, has a touching story behind it. “It all happened in one day at Olivia’s house in Malibu,” he said “First writing in the morning and then recording a quick demo in the afternoon at John Farrar’s, Olivia’s longtime collaborator’s, studio. The version you hear now is from that original session, a very relaxed and happy day.” Jim said the song took on a deeper meaning during Olivia’s cancer battle. “It started as a romantic duet,” he explained, “but has now become more significant as a theme that resonated with Olivia about her Dream and hope for a cure for cancer.” Jim found the cassette tape recently and decided to release My Dream individually and donate 100% of the proceeds to the Oliva Newton-John Foundation Fund, run by her widow, John Easterling. “How generous of Jim Brickman and their whole team for donating all the proceeds from this inspiring song,” John told People. “I mean, it wasn’t an accident that he found this song that they had done and never really put out. And it’s so timely with the results and the things that we’re seeing.” This story’s featured image is by Emma McIntyre/Getty Images. The world’s largest wind-powered cargo ship makes her maiden transatlantic voyage

The world’s largest wind-powered cargo ship makes her maiden transatlantic voyage

BY THE OPTIMIST DAILY EDITORIAL TEAM In a world where the shipping industry is wrestling with its environmental impact, a French startup called TOWT (TransOceanic Wind Transport) is presenting a solution that is both novel and rooted in centuries-old technology: wind. TOWT’s wind-powered cargo ship, Anemos, completed its first transatlantic voyage last month, delivering pallets of champagne, wine, and cognac from France to New York. For the first time in over a century, a major cargo vessel crossed the Atlantic virtually exclusively powered by wind. “We know the wind is abundant, and we’ve known it for centuries,” says Guillaume Le Grand, TOWT’s cofounder and president. The organization can capture wind in methods that are both reliable and commercially viable due to recent advances in meteorological modeling, satellite communications, and routing technologies. Le Grand affirms: “The technology we have today makes wind a reliable source of propulsion.” Not your average sailing ship Humans have indeed powered their boats with wind for generations, however, Anemos is not your typical sailing ship. It is inspired by high-tech racing boats, with carbon fiber masts that are substantially lighter and taller than the wooden masts of traditional ships. This permits the sails to be twice as large and catch more wind, resulting in maximum propulsion.  Anemos‘ most notable feature is its mechanical sail deployment system. Unlike conventional ships, which need teams of sailors to manage the rigging, Anemos can control all seven sails with a single remote. “You could actually handle the whole rigging—the seven sails on board, and 3,000 square meters of sail—with just one remote control,” Le Grand says. The ship is approximately 265 feet long, slightly larger than the famed Cutty Sark clipper ship, but with a considerably smaller crew—only seven sailors. Anemos uses unique routing software to optimize wind power on its journeys. It has diesel-electric engines as a backup, yet it can sail completely on wind power for roughly 95 percent of the time. During her inaugural journey, the ship experienced significant delays and had to rely on fuel before departing France, but the final ten days of the voyage were totally powered by sails. Furthermore, when the ship is traveling at a high enough speed, its propellers can spin in reverse, generating energy from the water’s wake to power onboard electronics. From the kitchen to the ventilation systems, the ship’s operations become more sustainable. A climate-conscious shipping solution While the capacity of Anemos—1,000 tons of cargo on pallets—is little in comparison to the 20,000-container capacity of current container ships, its function extends beyond sheer volume. Brands that use the ship’s service are motivated by more than just logistics; they see it as a method to achieve climate goals. According to Le Grand, buyers are willing to pay slightly higher transportation costs to reduce their carbon footprint.  TOWT sweetens the bargain by providing long-term contracts with fixed prices, which eliminates the wild fluctuations associated with diesel and fuel oil costs. “We offer a predictable price without the swings of fossil fuels,” Le Grand informs me. Furthermore, the green marketing potential is enormous: manufacturers may attach a QR code to their products, which leads to data regarding CO2 savings on each voyage. This transparency is an important selling factor in a market where consumers are becoming more concerned about their environmental impact. It is not enough to just ship items; it is also necessary to ship them sustainably. Wind power versus greenwashing As companies scramble to decarbonize, many are looking at other fuels, but Le Grand feels wind power is a better option. “The shipping industry, even though they seem to be willing to decarbonize, is sort of kicking the can down the road,” he points out. Many people are waiting for what he calls the “Santa” of decarbonized fuels, hoping that a low-cost, dependable alternative will arrive soon. However, Le Grand is wary of several proposed alternatives, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), which has the potential to cause severe pollution through methane leakage.  Wind, on the other hand, is free, abundant, and ready for use right now. TOWT’s ships provide an immediate solution rather than waiting for technological improvements in alternative fuel sources. Expanding the fleet and preparing the next generation of sailors TOWT’s ambitious aspirations do not end with Anemos. The business has already built a second ship and plans to commence monthly transatlantic journeys. After carrying wine and spirits to the United States, the ships will travel to South America to return coffee to Europe. The company has also ordered six additional vessels, which will begin operating in 2026, with the long-term intention of deploying hundreds of wind-powered ships. TOWT is not only expanding its fleet but also training a new generation of sailors. “We want to formalize and create a proper training for a modern sailing cargo captain, which doesn’t exist,” Le Grand explains. TOWT hopes that by teaching experienced sailors about this burgeoning business, it may create the groundwork for a larger shift in global shipping practices. The winds of change are here As the maritime industry faces increasing demand to decrease emissions, TOWT’s wind-powered vessels provide a realistic, modern alternative. With current technology making wind power more reliable than ever, and consumers keen to reduce their carbon footprints, the tide of change may be turning in favor of sustainable shipping. TOWT’s concept of a fleet of wind-powered ships sailing the world’s oceans might represent a dramatic transition away from fossil fuel-based shipping. And, with firms willing to pay a premium for sustainability, it’s apparent that wind power isn’t a thing of the past—it’s the future of marine transportation. The post The world’s largest wind-powered cargo ship makes her maiden transatlantic voyage first appeared on The Optimist Daily: Making Solutions the News.

Savoring: the happiness hack you didn’t know you needed

BY THE OPTIMIST DAILY EDITORIAL TEAM As the days become shorter and life seems to get busier, we’re all looking for ways to inject a bit more joy into our routines—especially during this particularly stressful election cycle. ‘Savoring’ is a simple yet effective way that is gaining favor in the area of mental health. Consider it a mental snapshot of life’s simple joys, such as a peaceful cup of coffee or the sun’s warmth on your skin. Experts like Meghan Watson, creator of Bloom Psychology & Wellness, define savoring as “attending to, appreciating, and extending your own positive emotional experience.” And the best part? You’re probably doing it without realizing it! So, what exactly is savoring? Savoring is the deliberate act of soaking in a wonderful experience and extending the joy it offers. It’s more than just “stopping to smell the roses”; it’s about making those roses the star of the show. Joseé Muldrew, founder of The Looking Glass, describes savoring as a way to “heighten and prolong experiences that generate more positive emotions, such as joy, gratitude, acceptance, pleasure, and love.” For example, instead of hurrying through lunch at work, savoring would entail taking a few moments to genuinely enjoy your meal outside, taking in both the cuisine and the fresh air. It’s about focusing on the delight of the moment rather than allowing it to slip unnoticed through your fingers. Why savoring is so much more than just positive vibes You might be wondering, “Isn’t this just a fancy way to be all about positive vibes?” Well, not quite. While savoring emphasizes happy emotions, it does not ignore life’s difficult periods. According to Muldrew, savoring helps you develop resilience for when the going gets tough. “Taking the time to really savor and process positive experiences can help us cope with stress,” Muldrew explains. Instead of ignoring negative experiences, savoring offers you a mental toolkit for balancing life’s ups and downs. And, unlike toxic positivity, which insists on a perpetual smile, savoring does not mean you start ignoring the difficult moments. It simply urges you to make time for delight, no matter how brief. Muldrew explains that it is more about “counterbalancing the negative experiences” than denying their existence. A cure for perfectionism? Maybe! Have you ever felt like you can only relax when you’ve completed your full to-do list? Or like you can’t have a glass of wine until the kids are fed, the dishes are done, and every sock is folded? Meghan Watson calls this the ‘perfectionism trap,’ and savoring may be the way out. Savoring teaches you to discover joy in small moments, even if the rest of your day is stressful. Watson refers to it as an ‘anti-perfectionistic stance,’ which allows you to embrace what’s wonderful in the present right now rather than waiting for everything to be perfect. How to start savoring: you’re probably already doing it! Chances are, you’re already enjoying certain moments without realizing it. Have you ever paused in a conversation to tell a friend how much you are enjoying your time together? That is savoring! Ever taken a picture of a sunset because it’s that beautiful? You guessed it: savoring. However, if you want to be more deliberate about it, here are some expert-approved tips: Take a moment to absorb your environment while walking, such as the crunch of leaves or the warmth of the sun. Or, if you’re having a delicious dinner, try to concentrate on the flavors and the experience of eating. Savoring the past:  Remember to cherish memories! Recall a happy memory, share it with a friend, or write about it in your notebook. In the words of Muldrew: “You’re extending the lifeline of that memory and giving it space in the present.” Savoring the future:  Imagine happy experiences and outcomes. Muldrew recommends making a vision board or simply getting a mental snapshot of what success or bliss looks like. This allows you to create anticipation for wonderful things to come, rather than focusing solely on fear about the future. Overcoming hurdles to savoring Not everyone finds it simple to sit with pleasant emotions, and that’s completely normal. Savoring can be uncomfortable for some people, especially if they have had previous trauma or traumatic experiences that have made joy feel strange and unfamiliar. Watson admits that for some, “savoring pleasure is also painful.” If this sounds like you, don’t panic; you can still start small. Even taking a few seconds to savor a happy situation can help you become more relaxed over time. If you’re having trouble, go to a therapist who can help you through the process. Everyone deserves joy Savoring is fundamentally about one simple truth: “Everyone deserves joy in their life,” says Watson. So, why not allow yourself to slow down, breathe, and enjoy the good times, no matter how small? Whether it’s the first sip of your morning coffee or a hug from a loved one, such moments are worth cherishing—and they may even help you get through the rougher ones. The post Savoring: the happiness hack you didn’t know you needed first appeared on The Optimist Daily: Making Solutions the News.
