Tony Iommi recalls his reaction when he first saw Eddie Van Halen

Tony Iommi recalls his reaction when he first saw Eddie Van Halen

Back in the late '70s, Black Sabbath was promoting Never Say Die, their final album with Ozzy Osbourne during his first tenure with the band. One of the opening acts for their tour was a young American band called Van Halen. They had just released their groundbreaking self-titled debut album, which impressed everyone in the music industry—especially due to Eddie Van Halen's revolutionary guitar playing. Like Tony Iommi, Eddie would go on to become one of the most influential guitarists of all time. The two developed a close friendship over the years. In an interview with Guitar World, Tony was asked about the last guitarist who truly impressed him. He named Eddie Van Halen and reminisced about his reaction the first time he saw Eddie perform live. Tony Iommi recalls his reaction when he first saw Eddie Van Halen “The first one was Eddie Van Halen. When they toured with us early on in their career, I thought he was really good and had come up with something very different for its time. Nowadays you can see how all the technical players have learned from Eddie. The funny thing about him was, much like me, he didn’t read music or anything. It was all from feel. He was inventing stuff just using his ears. “Some of the guitar playing I hear these days is too technical. You have to be precise on this note or that note. I can’t do that – if I do a solo on a record, it’s never the same live. I can’t reproduce what I did in the studio. I’ll do something similar but not exact,” Tony Iommi said. Eddie Van Halen passed away at the age of 65 back in 2020, a victim of cancer. He was a huge Black Sabbath fan and Van Halen used to perform many songs of the Metal band in the early days of their career when they were playing in bars. Eddie would even be the vocalist on some of these versions and in 1994 he had the chance to write a song with Sabbath. He was in England when the band was recording the album "Cross Purposes". He went to visit them in the studio and helped to write the song "Evil Eye". At the time the group had Tony Martin as the vocalist, Iommi on guitar and Geezer Butler on bass. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPcPBdqqgRo&t=41sThe post Tony Iommi recalls his reaction when he first saw Eddie Van Halen appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.

How dungeons inspired Iommi to write ‘Sabbath Bloody Sabbath’ riff

Also known as the Riffmaster, Tony Iommi was arguably the most pivotal musician in the creation of Heavy Metal music. The accident in which he lost the tips of two fingers forced him to change his playing technique, use lighter strings, and tune his guitar differently. These adaptations contributed to the distinctive sound of Black Sabbath, which laid the foundation for Heavy Metal music, alongside his bandmates Ozzy Osbourne, Bill Ward, and Geezer Butler. After the release of their groundbreaking self-titled debut album in 1970, Sabbath went on to release a series of incredible albums in the following years. However, in 1973, while in Los Angeles attempting to create a new album, Tony Iommi found himself creatively blocked. Everything changed when the band decided to seek inspiration by retreating to a castle in England. It was in the castle's dungeons that the riff for the classic song "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" came to him. Iommi recounted this story in an interview with Guitar World. How dungeons inspired Iommi to write 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' riff https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfTpjrzas5E “Before making that album, we went to L.A. to record and it never worked out. I got writer’s block and just couldn’t think of anything. I was a bit like, 'Oh, shit!' Then we came back to England and had a couple of weeks off. I’d never had a creative block like that before. “I was really worried because I just couldn’t think of anything. So we decided to create a bit of atmosphere and hired Clearwell Castle. We set our gear up in the dungeons. Bloody hell, straight away the first riff I came up with was that one from Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. I knew I really liked the sound of it, and then we built it up from there. It ultimately comes down to the mood you’re in, where you are, the atmosphere there and what you can create. Being in the dungeons of a castle clearly had the right effect on me,” Tony Iommi said. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath was the band's fifth album and was released in November, 1973. Besides the title track, it also has famous songs like "Sabbra Cadabra", "A National Acrobat" and "Killing Yourself To Live". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OykO8Nli9MI&t=1sThe post How dungeons inspired Iommi to write ‘Sabbath Bloody Sabbath’ riff appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.

Bob Dylan’s opinion on Bruce Springsteen

Bob Dylan’s opinion on Bruce Springsteen

One of the most prolific songwriters of all time, Bob Dylan certainly changed the course of music, showing everyone that you could write about things other than just love. He demonstrated that music could be a way to express your feelings, discuss politics, and address the injustices in the world, proving that it was possible to change things for the better. In the music business since the '50s, Dylan had the chance to witness the revolution he sparked up close and see many incredible artists emerge over the years. One of them was Bruce Springsteen, but what is Dylan's opinion of him? What is Bob Dylan’s opinion on Bruce Springsteen Springsteen's career started still in the 60s but he only had the chance to record his first album in 1973, when Bob Dylan also had caused a real revolution in music with his lyrics and songs. His got more famous in the late 70s and early 80s and really became one of the most successful artists in the world. Dylan also praised and respected Bruce's work and in an TV interview in 1985 (Transcribed by Rock and Roll Garage) he already praised the artist. "I'm glad to see Bruce making it so big. It's good, it's good for the reality of Rock and Roll. John Cougar too. I think there's good signs that people can make it and have an individual point of view and get that across on a larger scale," Bob Dylan said. In 2015 Dylan was honored as the MusiCares Person of the Year ceremony and many artists paid tribute to him, including Bruce, who performed "Knocking on Heaven's Door" with RATM's Tom Morello on guitar. In an interview with Bill Flanagan in 2015, Dylan praised the performance. He said: “Incredible! He did that song like the record, something I myself have never tried. I never even thought it was worth it. Maybe never had the manpower in one band to pull it off. I don’t know, but I never thought about it." Bob Dylan continued: https://youtu.be/scjD7h6v2Zc?si=qSBELzfXTVVq52nh&t=200 "To tell you the truth, I’d forgotten how the song ought to go. Bruce pulled all the power and spirituality and beauty out of it like no one has ever done. He was faithful, truly faithful to the version on the record, obviously the only one he has to go by." "I’m not a nostalgic person, but for a second there it all came back, Peckinpah, Slim Pickens, Katy Jurado, James Coburn, the dusty lawless streets of Durango, my first wife, my kids when they were small. For a second it all came back … it was that powerful. Bruce is a deep conscientious cat and the evidence of that was in the performance. He can get to your heart, my heart anyway,” Bob Dylan said. Bruce Springsteen inducted Bob Dylan into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Back in 1988 Bob Dylan was finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the chosen one to do that was Bruce Springsteen. That night with a band with many famous artists like Bruce himself and Mick Jagger, Bob performed songs like "Forever Young" and "Like a Rolling Stone". During his speech, Bruce praised Dylan saying (Transcribed by Rock and Roll Garage): "I knew that I was listening to the toughest voice that I'd ever heard." Curiously, Bob Dylan covered during a show in 1990 the Bruce Springsteen hit "Dancing In The Dark". Although he wrote more than 600 songs during his career, Dylan often covers other artists in his shows. The post Bob Dylan’s opinion on Bruce Springsteen appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.
