Ugandan Olympic runner Rebecca Cheptegei has died after she sustained burns to 80% of her body when she was allegedly set on fire by her boyfriend. Cheptegie, 33, passed away Thursday at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, where she had been receiving treatment, ESPN reported. Cheptegei had recently competed in the Paris Games. Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom said Monday that the attack, which occurred the day before just across the border from Uganda, began over a dispute between Cheptegei and her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, the BBC reported. During the altercation, the boyfriend was seen pouring a liquid on the woman before burning her,” Kosiom said, according to the BBC. Ndiema was also injured in the attack and treated at the hospital. “[Ndiema] is believed to have sneaked into the compound at around 2:00 p.m. on Sunday while the wife and the children were in church. Upon returning, Dickson, who had procured petrol, began pouring it on Rebecca before he set her ablaze.” Neighbors reportedly rescued the couple and put out the flames. The dispute reportedly involved Cheptegei purchasing property and building a house in Trans Nzoia to be closer to training facilities. She placed 44th in the Paris Olympics marathon over the summer. She previously won a gold medal at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in 2022. It is unclear whether Ndiema has been charged with any crimes. Peter Ogwang, Uganda’s minister of state for sports, said authorities in Kenya were investigating the attack, ESPN reported. Government data from 2022 indicates nearly 34% of Kenyan girls and women aged 15-49 have been the victims of physical violence, the outlet noted, adding that married women were at a higher risk. About 41% of married women in Kenya had experienced physical violence, the government survey found. Chelimo’s nonprofit, Tirop’s Angels, was founded by current and former athletes to combat domestic violence. “They get into these traps of predators who pose in their lives as lovers,” she told ESPN. Cheptegei is not the only athlete in Kenya to have been the victim of domestic violence. In October 2021, Olympic runner Agnes Tirop was stabbed multiple times in her neck, allegedly by her husband, Ibrahim Rotich. He was charged with her murder but pleaded not guilty. He was freed on bail and has not been tried yet.

As Americans, we are blessed with the greatest protection of individual rights known to man, none more important than the Constitution’s First Amendment, which lays freedom of speech, religion, press, and assembly as the bedrock upon which our republic rests. For nearly two and half centuries our nation has been a beacon and today, perhaps more than ever, that light must be shown to Brazil. On Friday, Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the Brazilian Supreme Court ordered the “immediate, complete and total suspension of X’s operations” in the country after the social media platform refused to comply with government orders to shut down accounts which it had singled out for censorship. The decision imposes a daily fine of R$50,000 (£6,800/almost $9,000) on individuals and companies that attempt to continue using X via a virtual private network. The same justice has also issued an order to freeze the assets of the company Starlink, a satellite internet provider, following X’s refusal to comply with the censorship orders. Starlink is a subsidiary of SpaceX, an entirely different company in which Elon Musk is a 40% minority shareholder with 79% voting rights. Monday, the Brazilian Supreme Court upheld the decision to ban X nationwide, further curtailing the right to free speech online. Appealing to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to uphold freedom of expression, lawyers from free speech-supporting legal advocacy group Alliance Defending Freedom International petitioned the body – which has jurisdiction over Brazil under the American Convention on Human Rights – to intervene in the dire situation. The orders to censor online content are supposedly based on combatting disinformation and fake news. But the state has targeted conservative voices for censorship, including blocking pro-life messages during the 2022 election campaign, which contained a message contrary to the pro-abortion position held by then-candidate Lula da Silva. Other targeted speech included repudiations of the Nicaraguan government’s suppression of religious freedom and the concern it could happen in Brazil, and criticism of Lula’s promotion of sexually explicit content in school curricula. Various journalists and public figures, including journalist Paulo Figueiredo and bestselling American author Michael Shellenberger, have already been targeted with secret criminal investigations for reporting on the authoritarian drift of the Brazilian courts and their censorship efforts. Of course, America’s moral authority to lead the world against the rising global tide of censorship is only as strong as our commitment to uphold these fundamental human rights in our own country. Facebook/Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg recently sent a letter to Congress admitting that his platform had censored important news stories under pressure from the Biden-Harris administration. Last year, the U.S. House Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government revealed that the U.S. Treasury Department conspired with major banks to monitor transactions of ordinary citizens making purchases at Dick’s Sporting Goods, Bass Pro Shops, and Cabela’s, and buying  “religious texts” like Bibles under the guise of identifying potential “domestic terrorists.” The federal government also flagged mainstream conservative organizations, and faith-based non-profit advocacy organizations like Alliance Defending Freedom, as potential “domestic terrorist” threats for surveillance by major banks. Unfortunately, government suppression of disfavored viewpoints in America isn’t limited to big government in Washington, D.C., As a seventh grader, Liam Morrison wore a T-shirt to Nichols Middle School in Middleborough, Massachusetts, that read, “There are only two genders.” The principal of the school, along with a school counselor, pulled Liam out of class and ordered him to remove his shirt. After Liam politely declined, school officials said that he must remove the shirt, or he could not return to class. Attorneys from Alliance Defending Freedom are representing Liam in court to defend his, and every student’s, right to free speech. The rising tide of censorship abroad has reached our shores; when it comes to protecting free speech from the authoritarian impulses of government officials, we now must stand resolute on both fronts. And whether it is in the halls of power in Brazil, Washington, D.C., the local city hall or school district, we cannot give an inch. Amidst pro-life infighting over Donald Trump’s stance on abortion, one woman facing prison time for her anti-abortion activism is urging her fellow pro-lifers to back the former president.  Eva Edl, an 89-year-old survivor of a communist concentration camp who was recently found guilty of charges related to praying outside of an abortion clinic, said that denouncing Trump over his views on abortion is not the best way forward for the movement. “I do not think that pro-life groups should denounce Trump, but they should rather try to educate him on the value of human life,” Edl told The Daily Wire on Wednesday.  “How can we expect Trump to know this truth when most pastors have not taught this biblical fact to their own congregation, and were silent throughout the years while pro-abortion voices devalued human life?” she said. “He needs to know that God created human life in His own image.”  Edl is one of many pro-life activists recently found guilty of engaging in a conspiracy against rights and violations of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act for peacefully praying outside an abortion clinic. She survived a World War II-era death camp before escaping to the United States, and has since devoted her life to protecting unborn babies. Her Wednesday remarks refer to controversy over Trump’s stance on pro-life laws, such as Florida’s law protecting unborn babies once they have a detectable heartbeat, which Trump has criticized as too strict. While Trump has a strong pro-life record — his Supreme Court nominees helped overturn Roe v. Wade, and he is staunchly against late term abortions — he has repeatedly said as of late that abortion laws should be left up to the states. He also pledged last week to be “great for women and their reproductive rights,” comments that prompted some activists to suggest that pro-life voters should not support Trump in November. Edl says she has “some dear friends who feel it would violate their conscience to vote for Trump,” and said they will “abstain from voting altogether.” But she says her “conscience” wouldn’t allow her to do the same. “It seems to me that we are one election away from communist rule in our country,” she reflected. “We are given only two choices: two candidates in the Communist Democrat Party or two candidates in the compromised Republican Party.” “I believe that, if I do not vote, I actually end up voting for the communist Democrat Party by default,” Edl continued. “This would trouble my conscience greatly.”  “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil,” Edl said, quoting a line often attributed to German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was executed for his opposition to Adolf Hitler. “God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.” Under President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, the Justice Department has utilized the FACE Act to targe pro-life activists for trying to stop abortions from taking place. The FACE Act prohibits use of force, obstruction, or property damage intended to interfere with “reproductive health care services.” The law theoretically protects houses of worship and pro-life pregnancy resource centers, but the Biden-Harris Justice Department has overwhelmingly used it to prosecute pro-life activists like Edl.  The president’s Republican critics, among them Sen. Mike Lee of Utah and Texas Rep. Chip Roy, have accused the Biden-Harris administration and its Justice Department of weaponizing the FACE Act, particularly given the hundreds of pro-abortion attacks on pregnancy centers and Catholic churches since the May 2022 leak of the draft Supreme Court opinion showing Roe v. Wade would soon be overturned.  Justice Department data obtained by Roy shows that the department’s Civil Rights Division has charged 24 FACE cases against 55 defendants since January 2021. Only two of those 24 cases originated from attacks on pregnancy resource centers — though FBI Director Christopher Wray claimed to Congress on July 24 that the FBI has focused more attention on pro-abortion violence against pro-life facilities.  “This data is particularly troubling in light of the fact that there have been at least 90 individual cases of attacks on pro-life organizations and pregnancy resource centers since the May 2022 leak of the Supreme Court’s draft opinion for the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case,” Roy wrote in an August 19 letter to the FBI.  Edl was accused by the Biden administration in February 2023 of conspiring to deny women seeking abortions of their constitutional rights. She was one of several participants in peaceful protests at two Michigan abortion facilities in 2020 and 2021.  Her co-defendants also charged in the conspiracy are Cal and Eva Zastrow, Chester Gallagher, Heather Idoni, Joel Curry, and Justin Phillips. The conspiracy charge could land each of them in federal prison for up to 10.5 years and saddle them with hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines. The charges stem from a peaceful demonstration where the group sat and stood outside of the Northland Family Planning Clinic in Sterling, Michigan alongside a group of other pro-life activists. Edl and Idoni face an additional charge for a pro-life protest the two of them attended at the Women’s Health Clinic in Saginaw, Michigan.  Asked by The Daily Wire in early August how she was feeling about her upcoming trial, Edl emphasized her trust in God. She also pointed to the cross necklace she had around her neck, the same necklace she wore when the forces of Yugoslavian communist dictator Josip Broz Tito rounded up her family because they belonged to the Danube Swabians ethnic group. “It doesn’t matter how it turns out, God wins in the end,” she said.

Amazon has come under fire after its Alexa devices provided starkly different responses when asked about presidential candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. The incident, which sparked outrage on social media, led to accusations of political bias, with critics accusing Amazon of favoring the Democratic vice president over the former Republican president. Amazon has since labeled the issue as an “error” and moved swiftly to rectify it. The controversy began when viral videos surfaced showing Alexa declining to answer the question, "Why should I vote for Donald Trump?" Instead, the virtual assistant responded, "I cannot provide content that promotes a specific political party or candidate." However, when asked the same question about Kamala Harris, Alexa offered a variety of detailed reasons, often emphasizing her identity as a woman of color and her political track record. Users noted that Alexa praised Harris for her role in criminal justice reform and immigration policy, highlighting her qualifications in areas such as racial justice and her career as a prosecutor​. ? users are outraged to find that @amazon 's Alexa was taking part in what many are calling "election interference". Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung took to social media, calling the issue “big tech election interference”. In response to the outcry, Amazon issued a statement acknowledging the error and stating that it had been resolved. "This was an error that was quickly fixed," a company spokesperson said. The company also assured users that Alexa does not have political views and that measures were in place to prevent such issues in the future​. With Trump’s support remaining strong among conservatives and Harris positioning herself as a leader in progressive politics, the stakes are high as both camps vie for voter attention. The timing of the incident could not have been worse for Amazon, as it coincided with heightened scrutiny of tech companies over issues like censorship and political bias. In the wake of similar controversies, such as the suppression of the Hunter Biden laptop story during the 2020 election, many conservatives remain skeptical of Big Tech’s impartiality. Senior Trump advisor Jason Miller sarcastically referred to the Alexa incident as just another “error” akin to the censorship controversies of recent years​. For Amazon, the challenge now is to rebuild trust among users who feel that the company’s technology may not be as neutral as it claims. While the company insists that Alexa is not politically biased, the fact that the device provided detailed answers in favor of Harris but refused to do the same for Trump has raised serious questions about the algorithms and policies guiding its responses. Amazon has promised to continue monitoring its platforms to ensure that such errors do not occur in the future​.
