What do men and women envy about each other? It’s a deceptively simple question, but the answers, as explored in a recent study from the University of Ostrava, dive deep into societal expectations, biological realities, and cultural stereotypes. Researchers surveyed 1,769 people, asking what they envied about the opposite gender. Their findings? A mixture of relatable, surprising, and thought-provoking insights that reveal how society shapes our perceptions of freedom and privilege. The study also uncovered a new type of envy, aptly named "ablative envy," in which we envy the absence of challenges we face. Women envy freedom from physical and emotional burdens When asked what they envied about men, women overwhelmingly pointed to what can be summed up as a less complicated, lower-stress existence. This sense of ease extended into professional realms. Women expressed frustration over pay gaps and career obstacles linked to motherhood, noting that men often enjoy "higher salaries" and "more favorable financial rewards at work." The envy also touched on societal expectations around appearance. Women appreciated that men don't face the same scrutiny over aging and physical appearance. As the study notes, women envied "the ability to age into beauty" and not having to "spend an hour in front of a mirror before leaving the house." Women highlighted men's greater ability to perform physically demanding tasks, like "opening a jar without difficulty." Additionally, they envied men's convenience in everyday situations, such as urinating standing up. Men envy women's emotional expressiveness and multifaceted abilities Conversely, men’s envy centered on aspects of emotional life, relational depth, and domestic skills often associated with femininity. Many men admired women's ability to openly express emotions, form deep connections, and embrace nurturing roles without societal judgment. The study found that men "envy women’s emotionality," noting that women are "permitted to express emotions at any time." In contrast, men often feel constrained by societal expectations to "earn and provide for their families." This emotional freedom allows women to build strong interpersonal relationships and support networks. Men employed endearing terms such as "bringing new life into the world" and "a woman as a giver of life." — Study findings This envy extended to women's roles in nurturing and caregiving. Several men expressed admiration—and even envy—for women's capacity for motherhood. via GIPHY Men's envy also encompassed women's multitasking abilities. They noted that women can "do multiple things at once" and "keep up with multiple tasks," managing both professional responsibilities and family life with apparent ease. One respondent admired that his wife is "adept at cooking, cleaning, washing, and handling various tasks in a playful manner." Men also recognized women's "physical attractiveness" and the social advantages it can confer, thought perhaps not in the way you might expect. Researchers found that these replies were less about superficial qualities and more about the ease that women can "utilize charm to one's advantage" and the "capacity to influence and control others" through social interactions. The emergence of "ablative envy" One of the study’s most groundbreaking insights was the identification of "ablative envy." This form of envy is about wanting the absence of a burden, rather than a possession or trait. Women envied men for their lack of menstruation, childbirth, and menopause—biological processes that can be physically and emotionally taxing. via GIPHY Men, on the other hand, envied women for being less pressured by societal expectations to suppress emotions or constantly "prove" their worth through stoicism and achievement. This concept of ablative envy highlights the deep emotional weight of societal expectations and biological realities, opening new avenues for understanding envy as more than just desire—it’s a longing for relief. Bridging envy into empathy Despite these differences, the study also showed that over 40% of women and more than half of men reported not envying the opposite gender at all. This suggests that while envy exists, it doesn’t define how people see each other—it’s just one layer of a complex relationship between genders. via GIPHY Understanding these dynamics isn’t about fostering division but rather empathy. By recognizing the pressures each gender faces—whether it’s societal expectations, emotional labor, or physical challenges—we can work toward dismantling stereotypes and building a more equitable society. The study points to actionable steps, like addressing pay inequality, supporting men’s mental health initiatives, and normalizing shared responsibility in caregiving roles. For individuals, it’s about stepping back from assumptions and celebrating the unique contributions of each person, regardless of gender. What this study says about society Ultimately, the study highlights how envy reflects societal imbalances. As long as one gender carries heavier burdens in certain domains, envy will persist. When Justin Trudeau was first elected prime minister of Canada in 2015, it was partly because of the sort of empty bombast that had helped get Barak Obama first elected president in 2008. Obama had promised “Hope and Change” while Trudeau promised “Sunny Ways.” By the time Trudeau was first elected, America had already soured on Obama, among other things because of his abysmal economic management, his divisive rhetoric, and his stoking of racism. Trudeau’s predecessor, Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper, had no such baggage. Under his leadership, Canada weathered the subprime meltdown crisis better than any other country in the G7 group of nations. Moreover, during Harper’s entire time in office, Canada continued on its longstanding trajectory of racial harmony and sensible immigration policies. Tragically, Trudeau has done to Canada what Obama and later Biden did to America: He has acted as a wrecking ball to both Canada’s economy and civic culture. Unfortunately, Canadians never got the memo about the destructiveness of the Obama administration, largely because Canada’s mainstream media is as ideologically leftward biased as its American counterpart — perhaps even more so because Canada’s mainstream media has been subsidized by the Trudeau regime. The leader of the pack is the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). When I was a college student, I worked for a couple of summers as a copy clerk in the national TV newsroom of the CBC. Back then it tried very hard to report the news objectively and hold the government to account. I no longer recognize it due to what it has become today. Following the futile skirmishes of the War of 1812 — a war which essentially was really between the United States and England — America and Canada have long had very good relations. During World War II, when Canada punched above its weight, this relationship was cemented and continued during the Korean War. Before his death, my late father-in-law was summoned to Washington and honored for his service during the Korean War by his American comrades-in-arms. The U.S.–Canada relationship has had its touchy moments over the years, most notably the dispute about the softwood lumber trade, but these things are normal in the course of long-term relations, even between friendly nations. However, it was seriously damaged during Trump’s first term by Trudeau’s stupidity and recklessness and this may have left a bad taste in Trump’s mouth. Trade and immigration were the main sticking points between the U.S. and Canada during Trump’s first term and continue to be so today. In 2017, when Trump instituted a travel ban from several foreign nations for national security reasons — dubbed a “Muslim travel ban” by his critics, although it was not restricted to Muslim nations — Trudeau jumped on his high horse and proclaimed that Muslims were most welcome to come to Canada. This resulted in a flood of immigrants from Muslim countries to Canada and would have had no effect on America except for the fact there was consequently a southward flow from Canada to the U.S. As is well known, border security is presently a huge issue in America and Tom Homan, who Trump has nominated as border security czar, has maintained that some of the migrants who are trying to enter the United States from Canada are on the U.S. terror watchlist. On Nov. 26, Trump announced that he would impose a 25 percent tariff on both Mexico and Canada if they didn’t staunch the flow of illegal immigrants across both borders. In response, Mexico quickly announced that it would stop all caravans headed northward. Trudeau and Trump had a two-hour talk after Trump’s announcement during which Canada’s prime minister also promised to help secure America’s northern border. It must be remembered that immigration is almost as much of an issue in Canada as it is in the U.S. and the vast majority of Canadians despise Trudeau for his lax immigration policies which have put a huge burden on housing and social services. Trudeau will do his best because he has to, but Canadians are looking to the Conservatives to do the heavy lifting after they come to power in the upcoming federal election. It won’t be easy any more than it will be easy for America, but it is a job that can and will be done. There is no indication that the president-elect is intent on bludgeoning America’s northern neighbor. Pete Hoekstra, who Trump has nominated as his ambassador to Canada, is a former Republican congressman from the state of Michigan and was also the former ambassador to the Netherlands during Trump’s first term. This is a classic appointment since Hoekstra, coming from a border state, ostensibly understands Canada better than many other American politicians. An even more positive indication of Trump’s goodwill is that there have been hints from his transition team that early on he intends to allow the completion of the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada to the U.S. which will be of great mutual benefit to both countries. Leading up to the next federal election, the mainstream media in Canada have already started demonizing Pierre Poilievre. Because the Trudeau regime cannot run on its dismal record, they have taken a similar tack to that taken by the American mainstream media before the American election. Laughably but predictably, they have been saying that the Conservative leader is even worse than Donald Trump — implying, of course, that he’s worse than Hitler — but underlying this smear is the fact that he is harder to demonize because he does not have Trump’s warts. No mean tweets to grouse about — what a pity! The same political currents that turned the American electorate so decisively away from the Democrats and towards the Republicans have also turned the Canadian electorate away from the Trudeau Liberal regime and towards the Canadian Conservatives under the leadership of Pierre Poilievre. I might be wrong, but I imagine that Pierre Poilievre and Donald Trump will get on famously, even more so than Brian Mulroney and Ronald Regan during their historic Shamrock Summit. After he wins the election, Poilievre can lay the groundwork by pledging to commit Canada to meeting its defense spending commitment in the NATO alliance, as Trump has long urged. This would be to the benefit of both nations because, under the Trudeau regime, the military has been sorely neglected and it’s high time Canada stopped being a freeloader (as are most European nations). Meeting its NATO commitment would show Canada’s goodwill towards America in the alliance while bringing its military up to snuff. Under the Trudeau regime during Trump’s first term, Canada and the U.S. may have been working at cross purposes but that will not be the case after Canada has elected a Conservative government and, as these things go in Canada, the Conservative government is bound to be in power for a long time. The excitement and enthusiasm about Trump’s win is understandable and it is shared by a great number of Canadians. However, as we all know, it’s easier to break things than to fix them. In the meantime, it would be best not to start a trade war as it would hurt both countries because America could use Canada’s oil just as much as Canada would like to sell it. I’m back in the big city. I’m so happy I think I’m going to come down with a renal colic. You don’t really know what a traffic jam is until you see a mayor of a major capital city claiming that he has decided to solve the pollution issue. The number one cause of poor air quality in the world is bad smells, and no one seems willing to fight it. The city is so full of things that stink that the smell of exhaust fumes is almost a relief these days. The mayor seems concerned about air quality, but the air is more concerned about the quality of the mayor. Pituitary psychology should dwell on the causes that make the smell of gasoline so fascinating to us. If it were a little cheaper, I would exchange my delicious Issey Miyake cologne for a good bottle of unleaded gasoline, or even premium diesel. Without intending to, a couple of days ago, I managed to spray a geyser three meters high from the fuel pump at one of those self-service gas stations where the big corporations force us to handle flammable liquids without fireproof suits, or a hose handling license, or fire insurance, or anything else. Oh well, everything that sprays up must rain down, so the gasoline ended up soaking me, but for the whole afternoon nobody told me: “You stink of gasoline” or “Take a shower.” They all sniffed me deeply, only to confess later their secret passion for the smell of gasoline. And honestly, if the price of fuel continues to fluctuate, the amount Issey Miyake sets me back for a giant bottle of perfume will become an irrelevant anecdote. Smells aside, another seductive aspect of the big city is the irrational haste. It differs from rational haste in that there is no reason for such urgency. I’m talking about how people run down the street while talking on their phones and dodging traffic signs without being chased by a pack of cannibalistic Aborigines. They are driven by inertia. Yesterday, walking up Alcalá Street from Cibeles Square, I saw so many people in such a hurry that I thought I was at the finish line of the San Silvestre long-distance race. However, most of those guys were not even sweating, which is always appreciated if we are all firm adepts of the clean air cause. So-called noise pollution is another kettle of fish. It is the name politicians use for what we normal people call “f*ing noise.” To me, city noise annoys me, unleashes my anxiety, and makes my mood tense. I resent the noise of cars and motorcycles. I hate with all my soul the guy who honks his horn. unless it’s to avoid an imminent fatal accident. And it seems to me that shouting in the street should be punishable by machine guns. But since they still haven’t found a way (I hope) to blame noise for climate change, nobody gives a damn that I can’t get any sleep. Otherwise, whatever they might say, the air in Madrid is extraordinary. At this time of the year, it smells of fallen fruits, roasted chestnuts, hot coffee, and neighborhood liquor stores. I don’t see a single cause for concern about air quality in any of the great capitals of the West, and yet I can’t say the same for the rest of the world. Still, the fight for air quality obsesses many cities now. If they were really concerned about it, they would start by deporting all dirty people. Then we could move on to cars. Usually, if you drop a sledgehammer of sufficient weight on an idiot’s car, he gives up trying to practice his democratic right to drive. Especially, if at the time you drop the sledgehammer, the guy is inside the car. Try it and I’ll be the first to bring you flowers in jail.
