Gergely Gulyas, minister in charge of the prime minister's office, stressed during a press conference that Hungary wants to avoid paying the large daily fines. "If Brussels wants to take in migrants, we can help," he continued. The conflict over asylum policy has been one of the most charged issues between Hungary and the EU, with the Hungarian government criticised for failing to live up to the Union's demands for protection of illegal migrants from the third world.
