These options will be available later this year in a new “Default Apps” section in Settings, according to an update on Thursday. In the spring of next year, Apple says it will also let users set default navigation, translation apps, and call spam filter apps. Along with these new options, iPhone users in the EU will add the ability to delete the App Store, Messages, Camera, Photos, and Safari apps. The body of billionaire tech mogul Mike Lynch was recovered off the coast of Sicily, the Italian Coast Guard announced on Thursday. Lynch’s 184-foot superyacht, the Bayesian, sunk on August 19th, reportedly after being hit by a tornado over the water, called a waterspout. The yacht sank quickly, according to reports, even though its manufacturer claimed it was unsinkable. Lynch was on the yacht with family and friends celebrating his acquittal on fraud charges in June. HP, which bought Lynch’s company, Autonomy, for $11 billion in 2011, had alleged “accounting improprieties” that misrepresented Autonomy’s value. There's no question the Pixel 9 phones are Google's best possible AI hardware right now. Google couldn't wait to launch the Pixel 9 models, even if that meant running Android 14 out of the box instead of the newest Android 15 release. Google had to prove that its Gemini AI features are ready for mass consumption right now. By launching now, Google got ahead of OpenAI's ChatGPT voice mode upgrade and the debut of Apple Intelligence on the iPhone 16. The current smartphone landscape, combined with recent advancements in AI, gave Google a golden opportunity it might not encounter again. We're at a point in time when hundreds of millions of iPhones out in the wild that will get the iOS 18 upgrade will not be capable of running any Apple AI features. Plus, when Apple Intelligence does roll out to the iPhone 16 series and iPhone 15 Pro models, it won't match the full capabilities of Gemini. Moving at break-neck speeds is challenging even for Google, however. The company finds itself in a position where it has to fix its AI again. The Pixel 9's Pixel Studio app can generate questionable AI content. Moreover, the Reimagine feature in the Photos app can also be abused. Jason Pohl/UC Berkeley While the dominant narrative and popular culture view Clovis points and tipped spears as a throwing weapon, UC Berkeley researchers say these tools may have actually been designed to be braced against the ground as a pike during a confrontation with megafauna. How did early humans use sharpened rocks to bring down megafauna 13,000 years ago? Did they throw spears tipped with carefully crafted, razor-sharp rocks called Clovis points? Did they surround and jab mammoths and mastodons? Or did they scavenge wounded animals, using Clovis points as a versatile tool to harvest meat and bones for food and supplies? UC Berkeley archaeologists say the answer might be none of the above. Instead, researchers say humans may have braced the butt of their pointed spears against the ground and angled the weapon upward in a way that would impale a charging animal. The force would have driven the spear deeper into the predator’s body, unleashing a more damaging blow than even the strongest prehistoric hunters would have been capable of on their own. Drawing upon multiple sources of writings and artwork, a team of Berkeley archaeologists reviewed historical evidence from around the world about people hunting with planted spears.
