What to expect from Google’s Pixel 9 event

Image: Google Google’s earlier-than-expected Pixel hardware event is just around the corner — it’s scheduled for Tuesday, August 13th. Thanks to the relentless flow of leaks that have emerged over the past few weeks, we have a pretty good idea of what to expect. Google has already confirmed that it’s launching the Pixel 9 and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, but the company may have some other surprises in store, including the Buds Pro 2 and maybe even the Pixel Watch 3. Here’s a roundup of everything we know so far. Google Pixel 9 lineup adds a smaller Pro option Alongside the Pixel 9, Google is expected to release the Pixel Pro in two sizes: a larger 6.8-inch model and a smaller 6.3-inch variant. It’ll be the first time the Pro features are available in two... Continue reading…

Meta’s new AI model can track any object in a picture or video

Meta’s new AI model can track any object in a picture or video

One reason I've been underwhelmed by AI is that companies consistently frame it as a solution to every problem under the sun. That's why Meta's new Segment Anything Model (SAM 2) is so intriguing to me. SAM 2 doesn't answer questions, write code, generate AI images, or compose music. Instead, as its name suggests, the new AI model simply segments objects in video and images -- but it does its one job really, really well. Meta describes SAM 2 as "the first unified model for real-time, promptable object segmentation in images and videos." You can use it to select multiple objects that can be tracked in real time, even if they're moving around erratically in a video. Here are just a few exciting examples of the new Segment Anything Model in action: https://x.com/MindBranches/status/1818096665246494784 https://x.com/XRarchitect/status/1818367449496182933 https://x.com/giswqs/status/1818340864705401265 According to Meta, SAM 2's improvements over the first model include better segmentation in images, better tracking in videos, and three times less interaction time than existing interactive video segmentation methods. If you want to try it out for yourself to see what the AI model is capable of, Meta has a demo on its site that lets you track several objects in a short video and then make various edits, including changing the background and adding effects to the selected objects. If you want to read more about SAM 2, check out Meta's latest blog post.
