Meta Pushes for a Digital ID Revolution

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Meta is coming out as a supporter of age verification, and the proposal the giant is putting forward exposes and sums up many of the points critics have been consistently making. A blog post by Meta VP and Global Head of Safety Antigone Davis proposes to implement age verification at the operating system/app stores level. Although the narrative around child safety and difficulties of parenting “in the digital age” dominates the article, “the meat of it” are the implications that this approach brings with it: namely, it creates a situation where, down the line, people would be forced to link real-world identity to their phone’s operating system (OS). And everything they do using the phone is exposed to that OS. Related: The 2024 Digital ID and Online Age Verification Agenda Davis goes into how the EU (notably via the Digital Services Act) is trying to resolve the problem of age verification, but doesn’t think any existing methods are good enough; instead, new regulation is needed, the Meta exec argues – and that would be the one that “applies to all apps.” It means incorporating “the point of approval” into the OS or app stores. The parents would be notified when their child downloads an app, which would allow them to approve it. (The idea seems to be that if a jurisdiction has laws that prohibit a certain category of minors from using certain apps – it would be the parents’ job to “enforce” that.) It might not sound like a very reliable way to ensure compliance, but it would achieve some goals, in the grand scheme of things, quite separate from what the “think of the children” argument seeks to present as the reason for the age verification push. Meta is trying to lead the way here in introducing “industry standards” – the proposal looks to embed the technology into different operating systems and app stores. When it comes to what a social media company should consider age-appropriate content, Meta is again urging common “standards” that would be observed by everyone. And, some countries already require that parents provide government-issued ID to app stores in order for their children to use a phone and set up accounts. Meta wants the EU to “mandate by a legislative framework that applies across all member states and for all apps teens use.” If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Trump’s Surgeon General Pick Supports Social Media Digital ID, Praised Facebook’s Censorship of Vaccine “Misinformation”

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. As President Trump’s second administration is taking shape, his picks for various key positions are expectedly coming under scrutiny, with the choice of the surgeon general nominee causing particular interest. The nominee, Dr. Janette Nesheiwat, has in the past defended issues like digital ID, and online age verification, but also even Big Tech’s – specifically Facebook’s – censorship around Covid topics. None of this is sitting well with some Trump supporters, who are now outright calling Nesheiwat “a bad choice.” As recently as in March and July of this year, Nesheiwat appeared on Fox News to call for teens and young children to be banned from social platforms (the contentious question here is rarely the intent, but rather the method, namely using digital ID for age verification). In March, she defended Florida House Bill (HB 3), mentioning the usual accusations that the internet represents a serious threat to young people’s mental health, but also life, in a plethora of ways. Other than endorsing HB 3, which bans minors younger than 14 and seeks parental consent for those under 16 to be able to use social networks, Nesheiwat also called for more “awareness” and involvement by parents – as a way to help manage the “challenges” of enforcing this, and other laws, such as the federal COPPA rule. In July, the doctor linked the issues of mass shootings, what she referred to as “just lunatics,” mental disorders, caused or fueled by substance abuse, and “obsession with violence” among the youth – and managed to wrap the argument up by bringing in social media. “I think social media should be banned to all teenagers, to all young children, because it’s done nothing but harm,” she told Fox News at the time. Insisting on such “solutions” is often a way for governments to pander to the constituents that they at the same time fail to inform about the consequences of online age verification, and those are invasive methods that seriously undermine everyone’s privacy – and security. As for the Covid lockdowns-era, the likely new US surgeon general was once again on Fox, where she is a contributor, to not only laud Facebook’s approach to censorship of “anti-vaccine disinformation” (that targeted RFK Jr., among many others) but to encourage other platforms to act the same way. https://video.reclaimthenet.org/articles/Nesheiwat-meta.mp4 If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Democratic lawmaker proposes northern states join Canada because she can't handle Trump win

Democratic lawmaker proposes northern states join Canada because she can't handle Trump win

Following in the footsteps of 19th century Democratic secessionists, New York state Sen. Liz Krueger (D) has raised the possibility of blue states breaking away from the Union for ideological reasons. Krueger, a Manhattan pro-abortion activist who runs New York's Senate Finance Committee, recently told Politico, "It is not unreasonable to think outside of the box." Krueger, like other New York radicals, is concerned that the incoming Trump administration will make good on its campaign promises, including the successful enforcement of American immigration law in her state — deporting criminal noncitizens and alleviating the strain they have placed on taxpayer-funded citizen resources. In September, Krueger told City & State New York that were Trump to win the election, she "would suggest to Canada that instead of us all trying to illegally cross the border at night without them noticing, which is pretty hard because there's a lot of us, that they should instead agree to let us be the southeast province, a new province of Canada." "I offered, even though I hadn't gotten agreement from other states yet, that I thought New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, would combine and be a great new province as the southeast province of Canada," said Krueger. "Basically everybody in these states are progressive Democrats." 'We would fit in pretty well.' Apparently, the Democrat who swore an oath to "support the Constitution of the United States" would be more than happy to trade the U.S. Constitution for Canada's highly flexible Charter of Rights and Freedoms and sell out millions of proud Americans. Trump secured 44.1% (3,484,124) of the votes in New York; 41.9% (739,317) of the votes in Connecticut; 36.5% (1,234,961) of the votes in Massachusetts; and 32.6% (119,393) of the votes in Vermont. "We would fit in pretty well with the political philosophy of at least most of the Canadian elected officials," said Krueger. The Democratic lawmaker is apparently unaware that Pierre Poilievre, the populist leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, is poised to crush Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party and the socialist New Democrat Party in the upcoming election. The Conservative Party has outperformed both of the Canadian leftist parties combined in recent polls. "I propose that this could be an option, and I got back some unofficial responses and heard this is probably sellable in Ottawa," added Krueger. If the northern incorporation doesn't fly, then the Democratic lawmaker apparently has another unworkable alternative: withhold over $300 billion in federal taxes in order to hamstring the Trump administration. Even Politico admitting that it's unclear how Krueger's tax-withholding plan might be accomplished, especially when a reactive cut in federal aid would greatly handicap New York. The Office of the New York State Comptroller indicated in April that in recent years, New York has repeatedly received more from Washington, D.C., than it has paid in federal taxes. In fiscal year 2022, for instance, the state generated $361.8 billion in federal taxes and benefited from $383 billion in federal spending. When it comes to secession and withholding taxes, Krueger is once again betting on losers. Like Blaze News? Educating Claudius: Transforming the Family Outcast into the Emperor of Rome

Educating Claudius: Transforming the Family Outcast into the Emperor of Rome

When the mad Roman Emperor Caligula was assassinated in 41 AD, his uncle Claudius ran to one of the palace's apartments and hid behind a curtain. Claudius was soon discovered by the praetorian guards and escorted to their camp, where he was introduced to the troops who proclaimed him emperor. Despite being the youngest son of Nero Drusus (brother of Emperor Tiberius) and Antonia the younger (daughter of Mark Antony and Emperor Augustus’ sister Octavia), Claudius was never a front-runner to be the Roman Emperor. Deemed an embarrassment at court due to his poor health and alarming lack of social skills, it was only when Caligula came to power that he was eventually offered a consulship as a colleague to the emperor himself only to be treated horribly by the young emperor and suffer public scorn at court. Rome’s Most Infamous Emperor: Was Caligula Mad or Bad? Dawn of the Roman Empire: The Julio-Claudians Despite his image as the slow-witted member of the imperial family, Claudius' initial moves in office were thoughtful and decisive. Though he sentenced Caligula’s assassins to death, he did not launch further investigations on the matter. Instead, he eliminated treason trials, burned criminal records, and destroyed Caligula's fabled stockpile of poison. A bust of Emperor Claudius.
