Who are Bob Weir’s primary guitar influences

Born in San Francisco, California back in 1947, the guitarist and singer Bob Weir helped to form The Grateful Dead back in 1965 and even though the band officially came to an end (with that name) after Jerry Garcia's death in 1995, Bob continued to play with his bandmates in other spin-off groups like "Dead & Company", besides also focusing on his solo career. Since The Grateful Dead has always been known as a live band, more than a studio group, Bob is often praised by his playing and the ability to improvise, something that is part of the band's style. In an interview with Alan Paul back in 2015, the musician recalled who his primary guitar influences are. He explained that everything started when he was 17 and tried to imitate the piano on the guitar. Grateful Dead's Bob Weir and his primary guitar influences: "Initially country and acoustic blues players. But my dirty little secret is that I learned by trying to imitate a piano. Specifically the work of McCoy Tyner in the John Coltrane Quartet. That caught my ear and lit my flame when I was 17." "I just loved what he did underneath Coltrane. So I sat with it for a long time and really tried to absorb it. Of course, Jerry was very influenced by horn players, including Coltrane. But I never really explicitly thought about that relationship. Because I didn’t really ever decide to pattern myself after McCoy Tyner’s piano. It just grabbed me." He continued: "I’ve never had much of an idea of what I’m up to and I’m not sure that I do even now. But I have always been there to serve the music and believed that if you sincerely do so then your appropriate role will present itself. Then it’s just a matter of finding the perfect place to play that role and I’m very fortunate that this happened to me at a very young age," Bob Weir said. During the same conversation he agreed that he usually doesn't play repetitive patterns and noted that is something that he was able to develop since he focused on being a rhythm guitar player. He also said that there is also an influence of Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh, since both of them usually didn't "repeat anything". During the three decades they were active, the band released 13 studio albums that sold according to the Guinness World Records, an estimated amount of more than 35 million copies worldwide. However, bands with that amount of sales usually don’t get the chance to play to a completely sold out stadium, for example. They usually perform in smaller venues, but that’s not what happened with the Dead. The only song by the group that entered the Top 40 or the Hot 100 charts during their entire career was the 1987 track “Touch of Grey” from their album “In the Dark”. So there was always a big difference between their record sales and their tours. Because for most part of their career, the group played to completely sold out stadiums in the United States and Canada, especially. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmMjY6tXaEoThe post Who are Bob Weir’s primary guitar influences appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.

Van Halen opening act recalls fight between Eddie and Hagar

Back in 2004, Van Halen reunited with Sammy Hagar and the band toured across the United States. One of their opening acts during those shows was the band Shinedown, formed in Jacksonville, Florida three years before. At the time they only had one record out and were promoting that material. In an interview with Paltrocast (Transcribed by Ultimate Classic Rock), the band's drummer Barry Kerch recalled that he saw Eddie Van Halen kicking Sammy Hagar "square in the nuts" on stage. He said that it was really incredible to have toured with one of his favorite bands but that it was a strange experience as well. Because at the time he said that was a clear division in the band, since Alex Van Halen would show up for the gig and then go away right after, Eddie would be in his own world with the guitar but would eventually show up in their dressing room and talk about guitars. But on the other side, Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony would always be together and they had the chance to hang out with the singer and bassist. Van Halen opening act recalls fight between Eddie and Hagar “Eddie (had a) cigarette in his mouth, bottle of wine in one hand, guitar on, 24-7 – that’s how he lived. He’d kick open our dressing room door, (start talking), teach how (he did something) on guitar. Wolfie was still riding a scooter up and down the hallways – he was like 10 – and Valerie was there, taking care and everything. So I got to meet all that. She’s the sweetest, Wolfie was a good kid.” “You never saw Alex; Alex would just show up, do the gig, get out – he didn’t want part of the drama, I’m sure. But I did get to sit behind his drum set, which was awesome!” “(...) There was one night Sammy was singing, and I don’t know why Eddie was pissed at him, but he was. Eddie comes over and just kicks him as hard as he can, square in the nuts, while he’s singing. Yeah, they really don’t like each other! But I had a dream come true, and they sounded great every night,” Barry Kerch said. Although there was a lot of tension between Sammy and the brothers Van Halen, the singer said after Eddie's passing in 2020 that he had the chance to say goodbye and be on good terms with the guitarist before he died. However he noted that the same thing didn't happen with Alex, who doesn't return his calls and doesn't talk to him for more than 20 years already. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMGUAZM-qb8&pp=ygUOcG91bmRjYWtlIGxpdmU%3DThe post Van Halen opening act recalls fight between Eddie and Hagar appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.

What Eric Clapton once said about marrying Harrison’s ex-wife

The friendship between George Harrison and Eric Clapton started back in the 60s when they first met each other when The Yardbirds opened for The Beatles. In the following years they played and recorded together, Clapton even played the solo in the famous Beatles track "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". But besides being great friends and fellow musicians, there is another interesting thing about the two, they were both married with the model and photographer Pattie Boyd. She was first married to George Harrison, from 1966 to 1977 when they divorced. But Clapton never hid his intentions even when she was married to the Beatle and by the time she divorced they were already together. They ended up getting married in 1979 and divorced 10 years later, in 1989. In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine back in 1991, Clapton talked about that relationship and how George reacted to that. What Eric Clapton once said about marrying harrison's ex-wife "Unbelievable (what happened). And it’s still there (their friendship). It has something to do with the way we wind each other up. I mean, there’s always a little barbed comment somewhere in any conversation. I mean, that devastated all three of us. It was fun at the time. It really was like one of those movies where you see wife swapping – Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice. And everyone was saying: “Oh, it doesn’t matter. We can write our own story on this.” Because those were the times." "But it took years, and it’ll never go away, the way it affected our lives. We’re still very much the same in the way we think about and feel about each other. Pattie is still there in the picture for all of us." He was then asked if there was a period where they didn't talk to each other because of Pattie. But as Clapton revealed, he said that George would even go visit the couple in their house from time to time. "No, not really. We always talked. Some of it was very LSD-type conversation and very esoteric, sort of cosmo-speak, especially from George. And he would show up from time to time, when Pattie and I were living together. He came around once, and it was all very trippy. It got quite hostile at times, but we always cared for one another." "I’ll probably get my knuckles rapped for talking about all this. I’ll go home, and I’ll see George, and he’ll go, “Oh, running off at the mouth again.” But I find it very hard not to talk about it, because it’s a part of my life," Eric Clapton said. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UprwkbzUX6g&pp=ygUed29uZGVyZnVsIHRvbmlnaHQgZXJpYyBjbGFwdG9uThe post What Eric Clapton once said about marrying Harrison’s ex-wife appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.
