Shawn Levy Taps The Adam Project Writer for Star Wars Movie

News Star Wars Shawn Levy Taps The Adam Project Writer for Star Wars Movie Jonathan Tropper is also responsible for the shows Warrior and See. By Vanessa Armstrong | Published on July 10, 2024 Comment 0 Share New Share We first found out that Stranger Things and Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy was working on a Star Wars movie back in 2022. It’s two years later, but now that the aforementioned third Deadpool film is set to come out in mere days, momentum on Levy’s feature that takes place in a galaxy far, far away is picking up. Today, Deadline confirmed that Levy has brought on his frequent collaborator, Jonathan Tropper, to pen the script. The two worked together on Netflix’s The Adam Project as well as 2014’s This Is Where I Leave You and 2017’s Kodachrome. Tropper also created the Max series Warrior (which is the best show you’ve never seen… check it out) and was showrunner on See, an Apple TV+ series starring Jason Momoa.   We don’t have any details yet on the story for Levy’s Star War, including when in the franchise’s timeline it will take place. The film isn’t the only Star War in the works, either. The next feature that will make its way to the big screen will be The Mandarlorian & Grogu, which is slated to come out on May 22, 2026. Another Rey-centered movie starring Daisey Ridley is also happening and is currently scheduled to come out in December 2026. Even though details are non-existent for the film, I can’t help but wonder whether Ryan Reynolds, who worked with Levy on The Adam Project and, of course, Deadpool & Wolverine, will once again team with Levy for a Star War. The answer is unknown, but I’d bet a Republic Credit that he’ll show up. [end-mark] The post Shawn Levy Taps <i>The Adam Project</i> Writer for Star Wars Movie appeared first on Reactor.

Primate: Horror Film Produced by Former Head of DC Films, Taps CODA Actor Troy Kotsur

News Primate Primate: Horror Film Produced by Former Head of DC Films, Taps CODA Actor Troy Kotsur The film is part of Walter Hamada’s first-look deal with Paramount. By Vanessa Armstrong | Published on July 10, 2024 Screenshot: Apple TV+ Comment 0 Share New Share Screenshot: Apple TV+ Former head of DC Films, Walter Hamada, is producing Primate, a horror film going into production at Paramount. Today, Variety broke the news that the production is moving forward and has found at least some of its cast. We know nothing about the plot of the movie other than it’s a horror flick with a title that suggests the motif of apes may be involved. We do know, however, that it will star Troy Kotsur, who won an Oscar for his performance in CODA as the deaf father (pictured above) of a hearing girl who wants to have a career as a singer. Kotsur also appeared in The Mandalorian and helped develop the Tusken sign language also used in The Book of Boba Fett. It will be directed by Johannes Roberts, whose previous credits include directing Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City and the “Suicide Bid” segment in V/H/S/99. The script comes from Roberts and Ernest Riera. Primate is part of Hamada’s first-look deal with Paramount, making him, according to Deadline “the architect of Paramount’s mainstream horror genre pod, with the mission to release several low- to mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming.” As such, this is just one of Hamada’s projects with Paramount. Another is the live-action, R-rated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, based on the comic of the same name. No news yet on when Primate will make its way to your eyeballs. House Report Reveals GARM’s Role in Stifling Online Discourse

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. A new report from the House Judiciary Committee released on Wednesday, and confirming our previous reporting, casts the Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM) under scrutiny, suggesting potential violations of federal antitrust laws due to its outsized influence in the advertising sector. We obtained a copy of the report for you here. Established in 2019 by Rob Rakowitz and the World Federation of Advertisers, GARM has been accused of leveraging this influence to systematically restrict certain viewpoints online and sideline platforms advocating divergent views. The organization, initially conceived to manage the surge of free speech online, is reported to coordinate with major industry players including Proctor & Gamble, Mars, Unilever, Diageo, GroupM, and others. The collaboration appears to stretch across the largest ad agency holding companies worldwide, known collectively as the Big Six. Such collaboration raises concerns about a concerted effort to police content, especially content that challenges mainstream narratives. Specifically, the report highlights GARM’s actions following the rebranding of Twitter by Elon Musk and its attempts to silence discussions on controversial topics like COVID-19 vaccines on Spotify’s “The Joe Rogan Experience.” Despite no “brand safety” risks acknowledged by GroupM, GARM still pressed for advertising restrictions on Rogan’s podcast. Moreover, internal communications within GARM reveal selective targeting against platforms like The Daily Wire, categorized under the “Global High Risk exclusion list” for purportedly promoting “Conspiracy Theories.” The report also includes examples where GARM leaders expressed disdain towards conservative outlets such as Fox News, The Daily Wire, and Breitbart News, aiming to curtail their advertising revenue by labeling their content as objectionable. The committee’s findings suggest that GARM’s methods not only potentially contravene Section 1 of the Sherman Act, which prohibits conspiracies that restrain commerce but also infringe upon fundamental American freedoms by censoring protected speech. This has raised significant concerns about the implications for democratic values and the diversity of voices in the American public sphere. In response to these allegations, the House Judiciary Committee has called for a hearing, which was held today, to examine whether the current antitrust law enforcement and penalties are sufficient to address such collusive behaviors within online advertising, signaling a critical review of how advertising power is wielded in the digital age. London’s Privacy Nightmare: Facial Recognition Gets a Boost at Tony Blair Conference

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Deployment of facial recognition has received another “endorsement” in the UK, during an event co-organized by the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change – including by London’s Metropolitan Police Director of Intelligence Lindsey Chiswick. The Future of Britain Conference 2024 is co-hosted by My Life My Say charity with links to UK authorities, and the US embassy in London. Despite civil rights groups like Big Brother Watch consistently warning against turning the UK’s high streets into a facial recognition-powered privacy and security nightmare, Chiswick was upbeat about using this technology. She shared that the results so far have been “really good,” and asserted that this is happening as the Met are “conscious” of privacy concerns, which is far from any pledge that those concerns are being properly addressed – the police are simply aware of them. Perhaps in line with that attitude, she conveniently left out the fact that the system is essentially a dragnet, scanning the faces of hundreds of thousands of law-abiding citizens in search of a very small number of criminal offenders – sometimes just to make a single arrest. But while Chiswick directs citizens to the Met website where they can see “transparency” in action – explanations of the legal mandate, and “all sorts of stuff” – she insists that this transparency is much better than what private companies who use the same tech offer. The idea seems to reassure the public not by stating – that we respect your privacy and rights and are open about how – but, “we’re less bad than the other guys.” According to Chiswick, facial recognition opens up a number of “opportunities” (in the mass surveillance effort) – such as crime pattern recognition, traffic management, forensic analysis, body body-worn video analysis. This high-ranking Met official came across as a major proponent and/or apologist of the controversial tech, describing it as a “game changer” that has already made a “huge difference” in how London is policed. Chiswick goes into the various techniques used to try to match images (taken by surveillance equipment, and from other sources) – one of them being the most contentious – live facial recognition. She promises that the “bespoke watch list” against which live camera feed images are compared is “not massive.” “That’s being created over time. So it’s bespoke to the intelligence case that sits behind the deployment,” Chiswick said. “If an offender walks past the camera and there’s an alert, that’s a potential match.” If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Lion Swims Record-Breaking Distance Across Predator-Filled River In Movie-Worthy Epic Feat

When you think of a lion, what is the first thing that comes to mind? A catchy song from a Disney movie, their majestic roar, or maybe the similarities between these predators and the housecat curled up on your lap? What perhaps doesn't enter your mind is the swimming prowess of these African beasts. Well, new research has revealed that these big cats might be swimming a whole lot more than we thought. In Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda there is a pair of lion (Panthera leo) brothers named Jacob and Tibu. The pair are already known to researchers because of 10-year-old Jacob’s incredible life of survival; among other things, his various battle scars have left him with only three legs. “I’d bet all my belongings that we are looking at Africa’s most resilient lion: he has been gored by a buffalo, his family was poisoned for lion body part trade, he was caught in a poacher’s snare, and finally lost his leg in another attempted poaching incident where he was caught in a steel trap,” said Dr Alexander Braczkowski, from Griffith University's Centre for Planetary Health and Food Security, in a statement. Jacob and Tibu show no sign that their various brushes with death have let that stop them. The latest exploit of the brothers is the subject of new research and shows the pair swimming approximately 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) across a river filled with crocodiles and hippos. The pair actually took three attempts to cross on the night the swim was recorded by drone, each time returning to the banks after being trailed by what the team thought was a hippo or a crocodile. “His swim, across a channel filled with high densities of hippos and crocodiles, is a record-breaker and is a truly amazing show of resilience in the face of such risk,” Dr Braczkwoski said.            Previously, lions were known to swim typically less than 100 meters (328 feet). The team estimates that Jacon and Tibu swam 1.1 kilometers (0.6 miles) in linear distance but more likely closer to 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) accounting for small changes in direction during the swim. Some swims have reportedly ended in death to the lions via crocodile attack. Nile crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus) can weigh more than four times that of adult male lions, explain the authors. This begs the question of why would the brothers risk swimming so far, given that the Kazinga Channel is so full of dangers. "It’s likely the brothers were looking for females,” Dr Braczkowski explained. “Competition for lionesses in the park is fierce and they lost a fight for female affection in the hours leading up to the swim, so it’s likely the duo mounted the risky journey to get to the females on the other side of the channel.” There is one other way across the river, but the researchers think that human activity deterred the lions from using the small bridge. Filming the epic feat back in February of this year, it's thought the brothers swam across the river six times. The team concluded that the lack of females, fights over territory with other males, and the human presence on the road bridge were the three main driving forces behind the lions' incredible record-breaking swims. “Jacob and Tibu’s big swim is another important example that some of our most beloved wildlife species are having to make tough decisions just to find homes and mates in a human-dominated world,” Dr Braczkowski said. The paper is published in Ecology and Evolution.
