Tracy Lawrence Raises $250,000 At 19th Annual Mission: Possible Turkey Fry And Benefit Concert

That's a lot of money — and a lot of fried turkey. Once again this year, country music legend Tracy Lawrence has spent part of his Thanksgiving week frying up turkeys to give back to his community. Now in his 19th year of hosting the Mission:Possible Turkey Fry and Benefit Concert, yesterday, Lawrence and 300 volunteers came together to cook over 1,600 turkeys on-site at the Nashville Fairgrounds. In addition, over 1,000 frozen turkeys were distributed to food shelters throughout Middle Tennessee, providing a record-breaking 25,000 meals to those in need. Notable volunteers on-hand to help fry the turkeys included Charles Esten, Terri Clark, Clint Black, Maddie Font (of Maddie & Tae), Chase Matthew, Trey Lewis, Lori Morgan and Frank Ray. Later in the evening, at a benefit concert featuring Russell Dickerson, Meghan Patrick, John Schneider (who you may know as Bo Duke from the Dukes of Hazzard) at Luke Combs' Category 10 bar on Broadway, they raised $250,000 to donate to Nashville Rescue Mission, Mission:Possible's longtime partner. It's an amazing way to give back that Lawrence has been doing for almost two decades now, and he told Whiskey Riff about how it's grown to be such a big event: “Just a handful of friends wanting to give back to the rescue mission, wanting to do something positive for the community. We’ve just taken advantage of the opportunities when they presented themselves and grown into this amazing event with all these volunteers and so many great sponsors.” Additionally, as another way to raise money, Lawrence recently launched his own injectable marinade, with a portion of the sales going to support the homeless community in the Nashville area. He says he just hopes to inspire other to give back in their own communities, and continue to grow his own event in order to help even more people in his local area: “Hopefully what we do will inspire other people. If they have any questions we’ll be happy to share our footprint with them and show them how we’ve done this and how we’ve grown. Hopefully we can inspire other people to do what we do here, and other people can do it in other places.” While onstage at the show, Tracy also shouted out the hundreds of volunteers who showed up to help, saying it means the world to him and he's proud to be part of the Nashville community, alongside others who care so much about their neighbors: “I love to be in an industry and a town that cares so much about its citizens. To see the hundreds of volunteers show up year after year, a lot of folks have been coming since this thing began 19 years ago. I can't even begin to tell you, from the bottom of my heart, how much it means to me. We should all be proud of the wonderful city that we live in.” It's always an incredible event, and a testament to Lawrence's legacy that he continues to show up to help those who might need a little extra love and support this Thanksgiving. And if you want to know what 1,600 turkeys looks like, it's as crazy as you'd think... https://www.instagram.com/p/DC15ALLO7yy/

Biden administration set to miss chance to lock in new food guidelines

A monthslong process to decide the federal government's food recommendations for the next five years is now set to stretch well into 2025. That timing means Biden officials will miss their opportunity to lock in new guidelines before the Trump administration takes over.  Switching terms in the middle of an update is unprecedented in recent history, though previous versions have come close: an update in 2005 was finished days before the inauguration and the 2020 ...

California’s Republican caucus is growing and more diverse, but it’s a long way from power

The Republican caucus in California’s Legislature is growing more diverse as Latino and Asian American candidates apparently flipped three Democrat-held seats, including unseating an incumbent Democrat senator for the first time in a presidential election since 1980. When new legislators are sworn in next week, Democrats will still control a supermajority in the Legislature. But the three flipped seats have Republicans hopeful that California’s reputation as a liberal enclave state may be...
