Former Trump adviser and War Room host Steve Bannon must report to prison by Monday after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected his emergency petition to remain free as he appeals his contempt of Congress conviction.  Bannon received a four-month sentence in 2022 for defying subpoenas from the House Jan. 6 committee. U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols had put Bannon’s sentence on hold while he pursued an appeal. However, Nichols ordered Bannon to report to prison by July 1st after the appeal was rejected. Bannon filed an emergency motion, asking the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia to overrule the lower court’s order that he report to prison by July 1st. The panel denied his request in a 2-1 vote, leaving an emergency bid to the Supreme Court as the lone option to avoid incarceration. From the Associated Press: The appeal was originally directed to Chief Justice John Roberts, who oversees such requests from Washington. He referred it to the full court. The court rejected it without explanation, as is typical. There were no noted dissents. Defense attorneys have argued the case raises issues that should be examined by the Supreme Court, including Bannon’s previous lawyer’s belief that the subpoena was invalid because former President Donald Trump had asserted executive privilege. Prosecutors, though, say Bannon had left the White House years before and Trump had never invoked executive privilege in front of the committee. “In a one-sentence order, the Supreme Court declines to intervene on Bannon’s behalf. I am not going to take a second to read your… pic.twitter.com/k1rR4Ubehn — Charlie Kirk (@charliekirk11) June 28, 2024 Per CBS News: The Justice Department urged the justices to deny Bannon’s effort, telling the court in a filing that his contention that he will have his convictions reversed or win a new trial because the lower courts misinterpreted what was required to convict him of contempt “lacks merit.” Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar rejected Bannon’s attempt to compare his situation to Justice Department lawyers who declined to turn over documents regarding Hunter Biden, President Biden’s son. His “total noncompliance even though he had been told by the former President’s counsel that he was not immune from testifying and could not simply disregard the subpoena, is not analogous to internal instructions to current government employees about providing testimony regarding their official responsibilities,” she wrote. She said that Bannon failed to identify any authority that supports absolute testimonial immunity for the former advisers of former presidents, and didn’t raise such a constitutional defense to his prosecution based on that purported immunity. Bannon is not the only former official from the Trump White House who has turned to the Supreme Court while fighting a contempt of Congress conviction. Peter Navarro, who served as a top trade adviser to Trump, is serving a four-month prison sentence at a correctional facility in Miami after he was convicted on two counts of criminal contempt last year for defying a subpoena from the House select committee.

President Joe Biden may be on the verge of reconsidering his run for a second term in the White House after a fumbling debate performance last Thursday. Sources told NBC News that Biden is expected to discuss the future of his re-election effort with members of his family at Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland on Sunday. The report noted how the White House announced Biden’s return to Camp David — where he spent several days preparing for the debate — last weekend. Biden’s campaign responded by pointing to a post-debate memo from its chairwoman, Jen O’Malley, expressing confidence in Biden’s ability to defeat former President Donald Trump. A senior Biden official also told CNN the president’s family, including children and grandchildren, is expected to be photographed by well-known photographer Annie Leibovitz. Many Democrats are reportedly panicking after Biden’s halting debate presentation in which the 81-year old failed to instill confidence about his fitness to serve another four years. Sources came forward in the middle of the face-off in Atlanta, which was hosted by CNN, suddenly claiming to news outlets that Biden had been suffering from a cold. Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison and Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez sought to reassure leading members of the party in a call on Saturday. But the Associated Press reported how committee members felt like they were being gaslighted by the pep talk about Biden and no questions were allowed while the chat function was disabled. Pressure is building on Biden to drop out and give the party the opportunity to pick another person to be selected as the nominee at the Democratic National Convention in August. A source told The New York Times that donors are wondering who they can contact to read first lady Jill Biden, who could try and persuade her husband to end his campaign. Polling released by CBS News on Sunday showed 72% of registered voters do not believe Biden has the mental and cognitive health to serve as president. Half said the same of Trump, who is 78. Biden himself sought to assuage concerns at a campaign rally in North Carolina on Friday, telling supporters that he is no longer a young man. “I don’t debate as well as I used to,” he said, adding later, “but I know how to do this job.” Trump said at a rally in Virginia on Friday that Biden’s “problem” is not his age, but rather “his competence.” He also called the debate a “big victory against a man that really is looking to destroy our country.”

Martin agreed, saying his family already had a “boatload” of their own problems since his biological son was born with severe brain damage. “You don’t get these Gerber babies,” he said. “If you were in the system, they got some problems. They got some trauma.” “It was difficult, very difficult. It was very hard. It wasn’t easy at all,” Martin said. “I had to almost be a policeman in my own household.” Martin recalled how one of his adopted sons once lit his bathroom on fire. Thankfully, the house did not burn down because Martin caught the fire in time, he said. His adopted daughter initially had a stealing problem, Martin said. “They had been hungry. And she had to feed her little brother so she had to steal food out of the store, and she developed this habit of stealing,” he said. “I don’t fault her,” Martin added. “When we first got both of them, my wife showed her to the cabinet and showed her, look at the food we got.” Martin said he was profoundly affected by seeing and caring for children who had been abused in the foster system. “For me to see life and the beauty of life and to look at what I have witnessed in the eyes and the mind, and how the abuse and neglect and the turmoil that have happened,” he said, “if anybody has any love of God in their heart at all, this will definitely do something to you inwardly.” Martin said adopting foster children is one way to strive to imitate the life of Christ. “But you know sometimes I think we’ve got to look beyond ourselves, look beyond where we are and to reach out into this world,” Martin said. “More or less like what Jesus did for us, the suffering that he went through for us that we may have a better life and a greater life.”
