Sotomayor sees added 'burden' on same-sex couples in scathing dissent on SCOTUS immigration case

Justice Sonia Sotomayor lashed out at her Supreme Court colleagues in a fiery dissent Friday, arguing the court's ruling in a spousal visa case will prove especially harmful for same-sex couples. "Same-sex couples may be forced to relocate to countries that do not recognize same-sex marriage, or even those that criminalize homosexuality," Sotomayor wrote in her dissent that was joined by Justices Elana Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson.  The opinion comes in the case of...

US to fund printing of more than 3 million textbooks for Ukrainian students after Russia destroys printing houses

The United States will fund the printing of more than three million textbooks for Ukrainian students to use in the coming school year amid escalated Russian attacks on Ukrainian printing facilities that are part of Moscow’s war “against the Ukrainian people,” US senior administration officials told CNN. “By striking Ukrainian printing presses, Russia is seeking to disrupt the production of Ukrainian textbooks and the education of Ukrainian children,” national security adviser...

'Vast Majority' of Pandemic Employee Retention Credit Claims Are Likely Scams, Says IRS

You can add the Internal Revenue Service to the ranks of federal agencies conceding that raining taxpayer money on all and sundry to offset the negative effects of pandemic-era closures didn't go as well as intended. Not only was a program meant to offset the cost of paying workers during lockdowns and voluntary social-distancing prone to being gamed, but the "vast majority" of claims submitted to the program show evidence of being fraudulent.

Harris, Democrats aim at Trump on abortion ruling anniversary

President Joe Biden's campaign used the second anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision overturning abortion rights on Monday to spotlight Donald Trump's role in the ruling, as Democrats zero in on the issue ahead of November's election. Vice President Kamala Harris, a former prosecutor, said Trump was "guilty" of taking away reproductive rights from women. First Lady Jill Biden and other Democrats also speaking on Monday hope to mobilize volunteers and voters around protecting the ...

78 Patients and 10 Hours Inside an Abortion Clinic in the South

On a disgustingly hot Thursday in June, car after car pulled into the parking lot of A Preferred Women’s Health Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, and left their engines running to cool off the abortion seekers sitting inside. They could be waiting well over two hours before getting a notification on their phones that it’s their turn to enter the clinic. Two years after Dobbs, APWHC is one of vanishingly few places in the South where someone can get an abortion....

Trump camp claims he was ‘tortured’ in Fulton County Jail — as it peddles coffee cups with his mugshot

Donald Trump’s team claimed Monday that he was “tortured” in Fulton County Jail during his August surrender on election tampering raps — as it peddled coffee cups with his mugshot. “I want you to remember what they did to me. They tortured me in the Fulton County Jail, and TOOK MY MUGSHOT. So guess what?” a new fundraising pitch from his camp said. “I put it on a mug for the WHOLE WORLD TO SEE!” The missive offered fans the opportunity to purchase one of...

Campaign Aide: Biden Plans Aggressive Debate Approach

President Joe Biden plans to be very aggressive during the debate with former President Donald Trump, according to a Biden campaign official. Biden’s most important task will be “to show that he is not diminished and is capable of carrying out presidential duties in a second term,” Allan Lichtman, a history professor at American University, told the Financial Times on Friday. “[Biden] needs to shake things up,” political analyst Charlie Cook said. “Debates usually don’t, but...

Biden takes fresh immigration moves into debate with Trump

U.S. President Joe Biden heads into a crucial debate with rival Donald Trump this week armed with new immigration and border policies that his backers hope will boost his standing among skeptical voters. Biden announced two major policy moves in June that seek to address migration challenges and woo the electorate: an asylum ban to cut illegal crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border and a sweeping legalization for long-term residents married to U.S. citizens. The two policies - one aimed at...

Infant deaths increased after Texas banned abortion in early pregnancy

Since Texas’ ban on abortion went into effect, infant deaths in the state increased by nearly 13%, according to a new analysis published on Monday in JAMA Pediatrics. In the rest of the country, infant mortality increased less than 2% over the same period. “We had read the literature that was showing an association [of infant death increases] with prior abortion restrictions or states that are hostile to abortion,” said lead author Alison Gemmill, a demographer and perinatal...
