President Trump was back in Washington, D.C. today… Not just back in D.C. but back on Capitol Hill! MAGA is SO back! There is so much to cover because it was a jam-packed day, so I’ll start off with a quick summary: President Trump visited Washington, D.C., and had a series of meetings and engagements throughout the day. Here’s a summary of his activities: Meeting with House Republicans: Trump met with House Republicans at the Capitol Hill Club, located near the Capitol. This was his first visit to Capitol Hill since leaving office. Meeting with Senate Republicans: Following his meeting with House Republicans, Trump had lunch with Senate Republicans at the National Republican Senatorial Committee headquarters. Business Roundtable: After his meetings with lawmakers, Trump attended a Business Roundtable at The Wharf, an area in D.C. known for its bars and offices. Media Interactions: Trump was expected to address the media during his visit, although specific details about these interactions were not provided in the information available. Public Reaction: There was a crowd gathering outside the Capitol Hill Club in anticipation of Trump’s arrival. But it was one topic in particular that is capturing all the attention…. Just a few days ago, President Trump promised to stop taxing tips for service workers during his next Administration: BREAKING: Trump Promises to Stop Taxing Tips! That went over to big (Big League, you might say!) that he's now expanded it. Today he floated the idea of eliminating the Income Tax altogether! Absolutely BRILLIANT idea! And not at all unreasonable either. In fact, did you know that for MOST of our history as a Nation we did not have a Federal income tax? It was an abhorrent idea to our Founders. But they don't teach that in schools. They don't want you to know your history, but I do. The truth is that for 126 years as a Nation we had no Federal Income Tax, and since 1913 we've only had one for 122 years.  Here's the breakdown: 1776-1861: No federal income tax. 1861-1872: Federal income tax during the Civil War, repealed after the war. 1872-1913: No federal income tax. 1913-Present: Federal income tax established with the ratification of the 16th Amendment and the subsequent Revenue Act of 1913. So while people like Harry Sissy on Twitter might think this is a crazy idea, it's not crazy at all. It's actually very grounded in fact and history. And we can do it again! How fitting to see Rep. Trump, in the meeting with GOP lawmakers at the Capitol Hill Club in Washington, D.C., also talked about using tariffs to leverage negotiating power over bad actors, according to another source in the room. The remarks show Trump, who championed tariffs as a foreign policy multi-tool during his first term in office, is considering a drastically more protectionist trade agenda if he defeats President Joe Biden in November. Spokespeople for Trump’s campaign did not immediately respond to CNBC’s requests for comment. Trump in a Truth Social post later Thursday morning said there was “lots discussed, all positive” in the meeting, without providing any more details. Trump’s remark about replacing income taxes with tariffs quickly drew critics. “Broadly substituting tariffs for income tax is a sure way to hit hard low and middle income Americans and reward top,” New York University School of Law professor David Kamin wrote on X. Washington Post op-ed columnist Catherine Rampell noted that since tens of millions of Americans who pay no federal income taxes would presumably fall under Trump’s tariff plan, “this sounds like a huge tax increase on the lower/middle income classes.” While there were a few talking head critics (mostly overpaid suits pushing the Democrat party line), the American people are eating this up! In his first time returning to the Capitol campus area since leaving office after the January 6, 2021, riot, the former president met with lawmakers for over an hour. In between rants about Taylor Swift and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Trump went after his detractors – those who have since lost their seats and some who were in the room – as he warned Republicans to not be afraid of the hot button issue of abortion. In a sign that the former president is reveling in how the party has fallen in line behind him, Trump bragged that most of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach him were no longer in office and singled out one of the remaining two GOP lawmakers left: GOP Rep. David Valadao of California. “I never loved him,” Trump said of Valadao, according to a GOP member. As a number of House Republicans find themselves in competitive primary races, the former president said he wanted to do tele-town halls, but acknowledged his help would not be welcomed by some, given that he had endorsed their primary opponents. Trump off topic There were a number of moments where the former president went off topic. As Trump was ranting about crime rates and so-called election integrity issues, the former president called Milwaukee – where Republicans are holding their convention this summer – “horrible,” according to a source in the room. Rep. Derrick Van Orden, a Wisconsin Republican who was in the room, made clear to CNN that Trump was “specifically referring to crime in Milwaukee” and not the city itself. In one bizarre moment, Trump called Pelosi’s daughter a “wacko” and then claimed her daughter once told him that he and the former House speaker would have had a “great romance” in another life, according to a lawmaker in the room.. In response to Trump’s comments, one of Pelosi’s daughters posted on X: “speaking for all 4 Pelosi daughters — this is a LIE. His deceitful, deranged obsession with our mother is yet another reason Donald Trump is unwell, unhinged and unfit to step foot anywhere near her — or the White House.” He also questioned why popstar Taylor Swift would support President Joe Biden over him, whom he referred to as a “dope.” “Why would she endorse this dope,” Trump said, according to a member in the room. “He doesn’t know how to get off a stage.” The former president even said at one point of Hannibal Lecter: “Nice guy … he even had a friend over for dinner.” At the start of the meeting, House Republicans sang happy birthday to the former president, whose birthday is Friday, and presented him with the game ball and bat from the congressional baseball game that Republican won on Wednesday, according to a source in the room. Senate meeting striking a more unifying tone A few hours later, Trump met with Senate Republicans behind closed doors and – lawmakers said – struck a unifying tone. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who has had a distant and icy relationship with the former president and has not spoken directly to him since December 2020, said that he shook hands with Trump and that the meeting was positive. “I can’t think of anything to tell you out of it that was negative,” he said. The former president sat between McConnell and Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, who also has had a rocky relationship with the former president. “He is the choice of our voters overwhelmingly. It shows that he is absolutely the leader of the party,” Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri said of Trump. “I mean, you had people who have vociferously opposed him, who were sitting right next to him in the room.” Perhaps the biggest news of the day was this: President Trump: Eliminate Tax On Tips? How About We Eliminate The Entire IRS! And I want to end with something I've been saying for several months now, but it was especially noticeable today: It Feels Like 2016 All Over Again! For the last couple of months, I've been saying that it suddenly feels like 2016 all over again. Hard to explain it, but the "vibe" right now feels very 2016. I'll explain more below, but basically in 2016 what was happening? Trump was untouchable. He was teflon. Each attack bounced off him and only made him stronger. That exact same thing is playing out again right now. In 2020, it wasn't like that. Everything felt "off". Whether that was an intentional play by the Trump Team to let this "movie" play out remains to be seen. But everything about 2020 was wrong. Not so in 2016. In 2016, Trump defied all "experts". And that same script is playing out right now in 2023 as we repeat the 2015-2106 cycle. But I'm not the only one to notice it. It feels like we've just taken that escalator ride down Trump Tower and now we're picking off 17 Republican challengers on our way to a historic and unprecedented White House victory. So while we're fighting battles on all fronts, I also can't help but be incredibly excited for our future and for the historic counter-punch that is about to go down in history.
