Empire Strikes Back – A C64 fan version by Megastyle has been released and it looks mighty impressive

Well, it’s that time of year again when we all suddenly become sci-fi nerds and amusingly misquote Star Wars for 24 hours, so to celebrate the geek in-joke turned global holiday that is Star Wars Day, we present you a brand new game for the C64 which is sure to excite many in the retro gaming community. Welcome to ‘Empire Strikes Back’ for the C64 by Megastyle; A Commodore 64 fan version of the original Parker Brothers game “Empire Strikes Back” which appeared on the Atari 2600 and the Intellivison way back in 1982! While many of you probably remember Empire Strikes Back on the C64 which was released back in 1988 by Domark that relied on the heavy vector line graphical environment that so many of us were used to and enjoyed in the Arcades. This version however is a big nod to the classic Atari 2600 version, as a side scrolling shooter pitting a snow speeder against an army of AT-ATs in a bid to protect the rebel base on Hoth from attack! #MayThe4thBeWithYou, lovely #C64 community! ?️#StarWars #Megastyle pic.twitter.com/9h9rYDIiCM — Chris Stanley (@ScubaChris72) May 4, 2021 Here is what the website says about this fabulous game for the C64 ” 40 years after the Atari and Intellivision games were released, Megastyle is now proud to present to you: The Commodore 64 fan version of the original Parker Brothers game “Empire Strikes Back”. In this version you have to protect the rebels power generators from the walkers – just like in the original Parker Brothers game. Only this time on a Commodore 64 and with 8 levels, new enemies, cut scenes and end sequence. ” Links :1) Source The post Empire Strikes Back – A C64 fan version by Megastyle has been released and it looks mighty impressive appeared first on Old School Gamer Magazine.

Atari 2600 Encyclopedia: Do you know Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back?

Release Date: 1982 Publisher: Parker Brothers Controller: Joystick Players: 1 – 2 Genre: Shoot’em Up Alternate Title: N/A Model #: PB5050 Rarity: 2 Programmer: Rex Bradford This movie based shooter is one of the finest, most challenging titles around. Join the battle of Hoth in your Snowspeeder as a fleet of the Empire’s AT-AT Walkers march in unison towards your rebel base. While the Empire can never truly be defeated, you can hold them off long enough for your comrades in arms to escape. The game begins with your Snowspeeder sitting on the icy tundra, theechoing march of the AT-AT Walkers echoing in the distance. As you take off and speed towards them, you can check your radar to see just how close you are to the lead one. As you engage it in combat, it will take forty-eight hits to bring it down, or one precise strike to a randomized weak point that reveals itself from time to time. If you manage to defeat the first one, move quickly to the second one before more are on the way. Battling the mechanical beasts can be a chore given how much armor they have, but thankfully you can fly right through them (at least on most gameplay options). Be aware though that their shots can travel through their body as well, so just because you are behind them doesn’t mean you are safe. As you take damage your ship will begin to change colors, turning a bright yellow just before you explode. When this happens simply fly out of harm’s way and land on the ice below for some temporary repairs that regain a notch of health. If you manage to stay in the fight for two solid minutes with a single Snowspeeder, the Force will overtake you, giving you twenty seconds of invincibility to go along with the Star Wars theme. There are numerous difficulty settings, mostly controlling how fast theWalkers move towards your base. You can also pick whether or not you want solid = walkers (meaning if you try and fly through them you’l die) and if you want them to have smart bombs. These are littledevices that are released and will pursue you until your demise. This game is simply a joy to play. The controls are tight, the music is spot on, and the gameplay really makes you feel like you’re taking part in one of the most famous movie battles of all time. you are a fan of the movies or shooters, this should be high up on your list.   More in the Atari 2600 Encyclopedia on great games like this!  Plus subscribe to Old School Gamer for FREE by clicking here!   The post Atari 2600 Encyclopedia: Do you know Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back? appeared first on Old School Gamer Magazine.

Video Game Trading Card Spotlight – Brian Morris

Video Game Trading Card Spotlight – Brian Morris

Our next Trading Card Spotlight features Brian Morris, who currently is displayed on card 4084, from the Superstars of 2022 Collection. Coach Brian is Esports coach for Canute schools in Canute, Oklahoma. Brian has coached gamers who have won championships in Paladins, Madden Football, CS:GO, and WWE2K.  Brian is also the founder and executive director of Oklahoma Scholastic Esports. His goal is to expand all the schools in Oklahoma to an Esports scholastic sport, with as many students as possible. What does it take to be an Esports Champion? This question is one I feel like could be answered many ways and so for me, I feel as though to be an esports champion, you’ve got to take the time to put into the craft. If you want to be a champion you have to maintain a positive outlook/attitude, you’ve got to put in time into your game(s), you’ve got to take time for yourself and stay healthy, and last but not least you’ve got to analyze your competitors and make moves that strategically could give you an advantage. Never give up, never quit, and always work to be better. Do you remember your first tournament you coached and what do you remember about it? The first tournament I coached was the 2021-2022 season in Oklahoma Scholastic Esports. It was with my Paladins team and we were in the State Championship in person at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford Oklahoma. I’ll never forget the adrenaline rush I got after we won and how my kids all wore business suits and had bananas inside their jacket pockets that they had kept from their sack lunches that day. What are your opinions about today’s generation of Esports players? How do you compare them to players 10 years ago? Today’s generation of esports players are amazing, don’t get me wrong 10 years ago the players were amazing too, but this generation is really re-defining some of the stereotypes given to esports players. When did you first coach Esports players? And what caught your interest? 2019 was the first time I ever coached esports players here in Oklahoma, it was absolutely wild. Our first year we had 3 state qualifiers for playoffs, and we had 2 that made the State Championship. I had 1 bring home a State Championship in Madden. What caught my interest is the fact that here’s this group of kids that really didn’t want to be at school or care about school and I brought them together and now they want to be at school, their grades are good, and they have a better path to success and graduation. Which gaming console is your and why? Gaming console that is my favorite has to be the Sega Dreamcast. I know, I know. I could have said Sony Playstation or Xbox or Nintendo Gamecube/N64 but, for me it was the Dreamcast. I loved that thing, it was way too advanced for its time and unfortunately Sega fumbled such a great console because my best friend and I had one and played Power Stone, Sonic Adventures, and Blue Stinger until the sun came up several times! Do you remember your first video game you played and what do you remember about it? The very first video game I ever played was Galaga. I loved this game because of the colors, sounds, and general overall challenge of the game. It didn’t seem hard but there were strategic points you had to do like sacrificing a ship in order to be able to double up and take out the enemies. What games today do you play and what are your favorite genres of games? Honestly, I play a ton of different genres but some of my favorite games of all time has to be Halo (Infinite & Master Chief Collection unless we are talking about OG Halo then it’s Reach/3/2) the Civilization Series, NCAA Football 14 until 25 comes out, and I love Super Mario RPG that just was remastered for Nintendo Switch. Do you believe some video games are too violent and lead to violence in America today? I do not, feel as though video games lead to violence in America. I feel as though there are many other factors that are not taken into account and video games get the automatic blame. If Video Games are the blaming factor, then why after Mortal Kombat was originally released did we not see people ripping other people’s hearts and/or spines out of their bodies? People want to blame things instead of individuals and it’s unfortunate because it is leading to organizations not being able to offer games for esports that colleges play on a scholarship level. Do you prefer playing video games alone or against friends and why? I enjoy occasionally playing alone as long as it has a good story (Fable) or it’s a sports game. I don’t mind multiplayer games but the one thing I absolutely miss is couch-co-op games like a true Mario Party style game. Did you ever think one day you would be on a video game trading card? Honestly, I did not think I would be this involved with video games and esports. I grew up in an arcade and so I thought my days of just playing for fun is all that it would end up being, just for fun. Instead, I’ve created Oklahoma Scholastic Esports, the largest 4th-12th esports non-profit organization in Oklahoma. When did you first meet Walter Day and where was it at? Honestly, I believe the first time I ever saw Walter Day was in the 2008 Guinness World Records – Gamers Edition book. I had no idea who he was until then and now that I know it is absolutely amazing what he has done and been a part of! If you could describe Walter Day in one word, what would that word be and why? Pioneer, he deserves that title because he really has set himself apart from the industry in terms of how he did what he did. He didn’t set out from day 1 to be highly involved in the video game industry but he became involved in his own way and his own path which in itself is amazing. What are some of your most proud tournament wins and why? I think one of my most proud tournament wins was at a random smash tournament in Altus Oklahoma. I had taken my esports students to this event so they could compete, well the organizer was needing some more people in the pool and so I entered, and I actually ended up beating the #5 Diddy Kong in the state in Smash, and I’ll be honest, I’m not great! What was your first impression of a fighting games and why did it appeal to you? I am a huge fighting game fan, for me my very first fighter was Mortal Kombat, and I loved it but the one that really took me to the next level and even got me deeply involved with fighters was Sega’s Virtua Fighter. I just loved the graphics and the fighting styles at the time. What is your favorite arcade game of all time? It has to be Street Fighter! Loved that game as a kid and still love the Series to this day! If you can design your own game, what would it be about and who would be the main character? Oh, great question, I actually had a script a buddy and me made while in High School, but it’s been lost throughout the years but basically it was like if you took Earthbound and added elements from Fable. Our main character would have been a girl by the name of Holly who had to defeat the evil Markimus Prime, a devil from the Underworld. How do you see competitive Super Smash Bros. and fighting games in the next 10 years? I think the FGC is going to continue to explode and it might actually hold up the esports realm while it rebuilds. I believe we are going to go through a phase of games that colleges and pros will have to make a decision do we keep supporting this or do we start down this track. I just hope we get a new smash with even more characters to unlock and battle with!     The post Video Game Trading Card Spotlight – Brian Morris appeared first on Old School Gamer Magazine.

Revisitng the Best Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas DLC

It’s crazy to think that it’s been over a decade since Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas. Getting a ton of attention from new gamers since the Amazon Prime streaming show was released, all of a sudden a new generation wants to play Fallout 3 and New Vegas. In this exclusive Old School Gamer post, we detail five DLC from Fallout 3 and New Vegas and tell ya why you need to jump into them or enter the Wasteland all over again. *these DLC all come with the Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas Game of the Year/Ultimate Editions. Fallout 3: Operation Anchorage: the shooting action in Operation Anchorage Ranging is nearly flawless. The different types of enemies also play a part in this as well, from the run of the mill Chinese soldiers that require no real finesse to kill, to flat out dangerous Chinese Dragoons, who have their own version of the popular stealth-boy and will sneak up on you faster than Kevin Bacon in “Hollow Man.” When it’s all said and done, the combat in this DLC make up for any misgivings you could possibly have with its length or lack of color. The Chimera tank is also a worthy foe and will require a bit of ingenuity, or a combination of speed and explosives to defeat. If that wasn’t enough, you’ll also find yourself using the VATS targeting system much more in this add-on, mostly due to the number of enemies you’ll be encountering, resulting in a plethora of blood and flying limbs. Fallout New Vegas: Dead Money: Upon finding a radio signal for the Sierra Madre, you’re knocked out and taken to a village infested with “ghost hunters.” Their origin isn’t explained too well, but they’re tough. Using knives at the end of spears, as well as gas bombs and bear-trap fists, these things pack a mighty wallop. If dealing with them alone wasn’t enough, you’re also introduced to three other characters, a woman with no voice and an apparent victim of medical experiments, a super mutant with multiple personalities and a ghoul that used to be an entertainer. Fallout 3: The Pitt: Unlike “Operation Anchorage,” which is covered in snow and blue skies, “The Pitt” heavily resembles the capital wasteland, but in its own way. Gone are those pesky super mutants that seem to be all over the map in the original game in lieu of torgs, which are similar to the feral ghouls present in the capital wasteland, but are far quicker [mostly due to the fact that they walk on all fours] and in some cases, much more dangerous. Unlike the ghouls, who are rather slow and attack without hesitation, torgs seem to always be in packs of two or three, making them far more dangerous. Until you’ve gotten all your equipment and weaponry back, about halfway through the story, they can be a huge hindrance on your player’s health. Fallout New Vegas: Old World Blues: It’s impossible to not eventually fall in love with the story [After a lengthy amount of dialogue through the first hour or so of the game that sets the tone but nearly bores the gamer to death.]. The characters are funny and grow on you like fungus. Much like the early missions with the Brotherhood of Steel, even though you’re being held against your will, you develop a sort of Stockholm syndrome with this bunch of robotic misfits. Intelligent, yet incredibly naïve, it’s a blast to use a high speech skill to your advantage here, earning yourself added ammo and other items. Through this, you’ll quite possibly get more attached to the characters here than any other add-on for the title. Fallout 3: Point Lookout: This one offers plenty of room to roam around, while possessing an intriguing story and side quests, keeping you busier than any other download previously available for the game. Feeling like a combination of “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Deliverance,” “Point Lookout” has an ambiance unlike any other game in the series. The storyline is quirky and features its own distinct style and wit. The dialog is also some of the best since “The Pitt” and induces several chuckles along the way. The missions, which there are over a dozen of, include everything from joining the ranks of a cult and going on a “spiritual journey,” to sinking a submarine and uncovering the plans of a Chinese spy. Fun, engaging and well-thought out, these missions require you to run all over the dark and muddy swamp lands. Hermanos – An entertaining platform puzzler from D.Rejment for the C64

A new Commodore 64 homebrew has surfaced which may appeal to those of you who like a challenge, as D.Rejment has released the Commodore 64 game of ‘Hermanos’. A game in which the creator says you have to guide Hermanos through 20 levels and collect the gold scattered around each of the many levels found in the game. To coincide with this news story, Saberman has provided a video of the game which can be viewed below. [embedded content] Here’s the latest from the NFO file which goes into further detail of how to play the game. “Hermanos cannot jump or climb. He just can warp himself with the warp positions in the levels. These flickering places let him climb or move down one or more stages. This depends on the difficulty of the levels. Hermanos has to reach the end hole of the current level to the reach the next one. Game control is played via joystick in port 2 and warp positions can be used with the fire button. Good luck you’ve only got 250 seconds per level” Links :1) Source  The post Hermanos – An entertaining platform puzzler from D.Rejment for the C64 appeared first on Old School Gamer Magazine.
