Department Of Justice Warns It Will Sue Iowa Over Law Cracking Down On Illegal Immigration

The Biden administration’s Department of Justice (DOJ) warned Iowa that it will sue the state if it enforces a recently passed law that seeks to crack down on illegal immigration. The DOJ’s warning comes after Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed legislation last month that would make illegal reentry into the state an aggravated misdemeanor, empowering the state to arrest illegal immigrants. “The Biden administration has failed to enforce our nation’s immigration laws, putting the protection and safety of Iowans at risk,” Reynolds said after first signing the legislation. “Those who come into our country illegally have broken the law, yet Biden refuses to deport them.” The Biden DOJ’s Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Brian Boynton responded to the legislation with a letter to Governor Kim Reynolds and Attorney General Brenna Bird, giving the state until May 7 to suspend the enforcement of the new law before the federal government steps in. Boynton argued that Iowa’s new law “is preempted by federal law and violates the United States Constitution” and that it “effectively creates a separate state immigration scheme,” which “intrudes into a field that is occupied by the federal government and is preempted.” The state’s Attorney General Brenna Bird signaled that Iowa will not capitulate to the Biden administration’s request. “Iowa will not back down and stand by as our state’s safety hangs in the balance. If Biden refuses to stop the border invasion and keep our communities safe, Iowa will do the job for him.” Governor Reynolds asserted that the law is only necessary because of the Biden administration’s unwillingness to secure the southern border. “The only reason we had to pass this law is because the Biden administration refuses to enforce the laws already on the books,” Reynolds contended. “I have a duty to protect the citizens of Iowa. Unlike the federal government, we will respect the rule of law and enforce it.” CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP The emerging feud between the Biden DOJ and the state of Iowa comes while Texas is embroiled in its own ongoing legal fight over a similar immigration law. The state’s Senate Bill 4, which also allows authorities to detain and charge those in the country illegally, has been the focus of legal battles with the federal government. States like Iowa, Texas, and Georgia have passed legislation aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration as the United States has witnessed an unprecedented crisis on the border, with officials recording over 9.5 million nationwide encounters and 1.7 million estimated illegal immigrant gotaways since Joe Biden took office. There were only 445,000 total reported gotaways for 2018, 2019, and 2020 under the Trump administration.

Dove Partners With Lesbian Couple For Mother’s Day Ad Promo. Treat Your Mom To Jeremy’s Razors Instead.

Dove Partners With Lesbian Couple For Mother’s Day Ad Promo. Treat Your Mom To Jeremy’s Razors Instead.

You can tell a lot about a company’s values based on its ad partners. The Bud Light partnership with trans-identifying activist Dylan Mulvaney is bound to be remembered as the most disastrous marketing decision in history. Thanks to one social media push, the brand’s reputation is forever tarnished. The resulting boycott cost the company an estimated $1 billion in lost sales. Sadly, Bud Light is far from the only company peddling progressive nonsense. While Jeremy’s Razors stands proud as a beacon of sanity amid the chaos and lies, there are dozens of other companies worshiping at the altar of woke on a daily basis. They get away with it because no one stops them. One of the most egregious examples of this is Dove, a company that most recently partnered with two lesbian influencers for a Mother’s Day promo. It’s not the first time Dove made waves for their extremism and barring any Bud Lite-esque boycott for this go-round, it likely won’t be the last. Mother’s Day is a holiday that’s been on the progressive radar for a while now. It’s no wonder that the side that can’t even figure out what a woman is refuses to honor moms. Now the international personal care brand is attacking the concept of traditional families by partnering with team2moms, a pro-LGBT Instagram account. The promo post begins by tagging sponsors Dove and Walmart. “Being a Mom has its highs and lows, even when you have TWO! So, this #MothersDay season, we’re teaming up with @dove to help spread the message of self-care to all Moms and Mom-like figures out there,” it says before making a pitch for Dove products purchased from Walmart. The Atlanta-based influencers boast seven million TikTok followers, two million YouTube subscribers, and close to half a million followers on Instagram. And what do they stand for? A run-through of past posts shows the couple’s daughter posing for a photo with Vice President Kamala Harris after interviewing her. In another, the 12-year-old girl goes back and forth between her “mom” and “mama” while answering frequently asked questions, including “Which one is your real mom?” (Her answer: both). In another video set to the Hozier song “Take Me to Church,” the team2moms couple and two other influencers mockingly make the sign of the cross while advertising “being [gay] is not a sin.” “What we really need to do is pray away HOMOPHOBIA,” the video caption says. The madness must stop, but the only way it will is if consumers pull a Bud Light on Dove and all the other companies intent on pushing leftist values on the public. The best way to do that is to find an alternative. And hey, good news – that alternative exists right here. At Jeremy’s Razors, Mother’s Day celebrates the one and only biological woman who birthed you – not the two women confusing a preteen by both posing as “real moms.” Treat the special lady in your life to indoctrination-free, vastly superior products from a brand that knows the true meaning of Mother’s Day. Plus, for a limited time, save 25% on all collection items. There’s never been a better time to treat mom to the perfect gift that actually aligns with her values. And today is your last chance to take advantage of 25% off. We’ve had enough. We’re taking back Mother’s Day. We’re taking back traditional families. And next? We’re taking back the culture, too. Join the fight with Jeremy’s Razors, the perfect gift for (just one) mom.

If They Can Erase Sisterhood, They Can Erase Women

If They Can Erase Sisterhood, They Can Erase Women

The Tenth Circuit finally gave us a day in court to fight for something we never thought we’d have to: the right to live and associate with other women. See, we joined Kappa Kappa Gamma at the University of Wyoming because we wanted to learn and grow with other women. Women have done this for ages: Kappa itself was founded in 1870, and when Title IX was passed in 1972, generally outlawing sex-based associations, sororities were explicitly exempted from the law. But that all changed for us in the fall of 2022. Our sisters were pressured by the Kappa Kappa Gamma headquarters to initiate a male—going so far as to force our votes to be public and warning us that voting against the male would be a sign of bigotry, a basis for expulsion from Kappa. But headquarters does not have to live with its decision. We do. They had their female-only environment when they were at college. We do not. The benefits of female-only living are self-evident, but they are also scientifically backed. Personally, we want a place to be ourselves. We want (and deserve) freedom from a male gaze in private environments. These emotional needs manifest themselves in concrete ways. Research shows that women are much less likely to speak, especially authoritatively, in mixed-sex settings. And women are 200% as likely to accept a leadership role in single-sex settings. Maybe we wouldn’t have noticed what we had until we lost it. We felt uneasy walking into bathrooms, knowing that our privacy there had been dissolved. Our bedrooms don’t have locks, and it was hard to fall asleep without that layer of protection in our intimate environment. Some sisters are sexual assault victims, and were forced to constantly shoulder the unease of trauma by having been stripped of their female-only environment. So after months of begging for the sorority we were promised, we sued. And we’re speaking up publicly too. Because this case, this issue, isn’t just about opportunities being stripped from us in college and in sorority houses. It’s also about being able to speak out and defend your beliefs without intimidation. We are women who want our constitutionally protected right to speak out and associate freely, including in women-only spaces. We have heard from hundreds of other women who share our views but fear speaking out and facing public shaming and persecution. We want them to find their voices and lead the way by taking this stand now. The four of us, and the other women who joined us in speaking out, have put a lot on the line with this lawsuit. At the outset, the court dismissed our concern for privacy in rejecting our request to proceed anonymously. We were just normal college girls who wanted everyone’s privacy protected, including the male’s. When we were forced to be public, we were then shamed for seeking publicity. We felt like we couldn’t win. Our lives have all been affected beyond the court case. Hannah made the hard decision to transfer to the University of Nebraska, where they have yet to initiate a male, fortunately. Maddie, the trooper among us, still lives in the same house as the male that Kappa initiated. Words cannot describe the tension of constantly seeing someone whose membership you’ve challenged in court. Jaylyn ultimately resigned her membership, leaving behind the house she was once a leader in. We don’t want this to happen to others. This issue is also bigger than Kappa, or sororities, or what’s happening to women on college campuses. It’s about women’s spaces nationally, and, more critically, whether women’s biological existence matters. Just this week, the Biden administration released new regulations that will push our college campuses further in the wrong direction. The Department of Education reinterpreted Title IX so that rather ensuring women have equal opportunity and don’t face discrimination “on the basis of sex,” now they have elevated the concept of “gender identity” so that any man who decided to claim to be a woman can access our spaces, our sports team, and our dormitories. Women’s interests are once again pushed aside to accommodate men. This is wrong. Women have to stand up for ourselves, our sisters, and our rights. Calling women bigots for refusing to pretend that the stronger, bigger, testosterone-driven, male-bodied person next to them is a “woman,” threatens and belittles us and our experiences. Biological realities have tied women together since the beginning of humankind. We know that men have the potential to overpower us. We know that we need to be careful and aware of those vulnerabilities wherever we are. Our nation’s policies, norms, and culture shouldn’t make this harder by forcing us to ignore biological reality. This lawsuit is the beginning of the fight, not the end. With Independent Women’s Forum, we will work to define women in state law, we will make the case to the public and the courts, and we will not rest until young women once again are recognized in law and in society as unique, deserving, and equal—not interchangeable—with men. * * * Jaylyn Westenbroek, Hannah Holtmeier, Allie Coghan, and Maddie Ramar are plaintiffs in Westenbroek v. Kappa Kappa Gamma and ambassadors for Independent Women’s Forum (iwf.org). The views expressed in this piece are those of the authors and do not necessarily represent those of The Daily Wire.

RFK Campaign Proposes ‘Massive Cuts’ To Military: ‘Everything Hinges On Demilitarization’

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. would cut military spending nearly in half to pay for a spate of new and expanded social programs if he wins the White House, according to his campaign. Charles Eisenstein, a senior adviser to the Kennedy campaign, said that the candidate would aim to cut military spending to a level not seen since President Dwight Eisenhower’s last year in office. The savings from the cost cutting would be redirected to cover childcare subsidies and other welfare programs. “Everything hinges on demilitarization,” Eisenstein told NOTUS. “OK, like massive cuts in the military budget.” Kennedy is running a long-shot, independent bid for the presidency. Kennedy is in a distant third, trailing President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. A recent NPR/PBS/Marist poll found Biden and Trump tied at 42 points each with Kennedy far behind with 11 points. Still, Kennedy’s third-party bid has attracted more support than any independent run since Ross Perot in 1992. Under Eisenhower in 1960, the United States spent about $47 billion on its military. In 2022, that number had ballooned to roughly $880 billion. But over the course of the decades, military spending as a percentage of GDP actually fell by more than half. In 1960, the U.S. military budget was equivalent to about 9% of GDP. In 2022, that fraction had fallen to just 3.5%. “We’ll be coming out with policies that are more specific,” Eisenstein said, “but I’m just painting a general picture of an obsolete, massive military machine that has spent a trillion dollars in regime-change wars over the last 20 years. A trillion dollars. What have we achieved with that? Can you say that we were successful even in Afghanistan, Iraq, or Syria, or Libya? I mean, these countries have descended into chaos.” Asked where the cuts would come from, Eisenstein proposed closing overseas military bases and decommissioning aircraft carriers as examples. Military bases within the United States may also be closed as well. U.S. service members who lose their jobs to the cuts could be retrained and rehired to rebuild U.S. infrastructure, Eisenstein suggested. Brent Sadler, a senior research fellow for naval warfare at The Heritage Foundation’s Allison Center for National Security, pushed back on the proposed Kennedy cuts, and said his campaign has mistakenly conflated the failures of U.S. political leadership with its military. “All of those were politically-decided actions,” Sadler told The Daily Wire of Eisenstein’s assessment of U.S. involvement in the Middle East. “The military was just simply supporting the decisions of the political leadership. And that’s both Democrat and Republican, conservative and liberal that own those decisions.” Eisenstein is also wrong about obsolete technology in the military, according to Sadler. The naval warfare expert pointed out that aircraft carriers have been in use in the Red Sea in recent months protecting international shipping lanes from Houthi rockets. “You don’t get rid of what you know works before you get into a fight,” Sadler said before noting increasing Chinese investment in its navy, including in aircraft carriers. “It would be reckless in my mind to basically start discarding aircraft carriers or stop building them. Once you stop building them, you basically are putting a death sentence on the industrial base that gives you those, and it’s very rapid deterioration when you do that.” Sadler said that his position may not be “cost-effective, but it certainly will make sure you live to see another day.” The Kennedy campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

Democrat Henry Cuellar Releases Statement After Being Indicted On Federal Charges

Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) released a statement on Friday maintaining his innocence after he and his wife were indicted on federal corruption and bribery charges. The 68-year-old congressman was charged along with his wife, Imelda Cuellar, 67, of participating in two alleged schemes involving bribery, unlawful foreign influence, and money laundering, the DOJ said in a statement. The Cuellars allegedly took nearly $600,000 in bribes from an oil and gas company that is wholly owned and controlled by the government of Azerbaijan and a bank that is headquartered in Mexico city. “The bribe payments were laundered, pursuant to sham consulting contracts, through a series of front companies and middlemen into shell companies owned by Imelda Cuellar,” prosecutors allege. “Cuellar performed little or no legitimate work under the sham contracts.” “I want to be clear that both my wife and I are innocent of these allegations,” he claimed in a statement. “Everything I have done in Congress has been to serve the people of South Texas.” Cuellar claimed that he only took the actions after he “proactively sought legal advice from the House Ethics Committee, who gave me more than one written opinion, along with an additional opinion from a national law firm.” He said that the actions he took were “consistent with the actions of many of my colleagues” and that they were always in America’s interests. CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP Cuellar praised his wife in the statement and claimed that she was an accomplished business professional and said that he was offended by the insinuation that his wife was “anything but qualified and hard working.” The indictment comes after the FBI raided Cuellar’s home and campaign office back in 2022 as part of the criminal investigation into the former Soviet state of Azerbaijan and several U.S. businessmen. Numerous items were seized during the raid. Prosecutors allege that in exchange for the bribes, Cuellar, who is the Ranking Member on the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, used his office to influence U.S. foreign policy in a manner favorable to Azerbaijan. “In exchange for the bribes paid by the Mexican bank, Congressman Cuellar allegedly agreed to influence legislative activity and to advise and pressure high-ranking U.S. Executive Branch officials regarding measures beneficial to the bank,” the DOJ said. Both individuals were charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit bribery of a federal official and to have a public official act as an agent of a foreign principal; two counts of bribery of a federal official; two counts of conspiracy to commit honest services wire fraud; two counts of violating the ban on public officials acting as agents of a foreign principal; one count of conspiracy to commit concealment money laundering; and five counts of money laundering. If convicted on all of the charges, both individuals face a maximum of up to 204 years in prison.

Police Alarmed By ‘Death To America’ Signs Found At NYU Anti-Israel Encampment: ‘There Is Somebody Funding This’

New York Police Department officers said they found posters and leaflets with disturbing anti-American and anti-Israel messages, including calls for violence and death, while an anti-Israel protest encampment was being cleaned up at New York University and The New School. Kaz Daughtry, the NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Operations, posted pictures of literature found “at the illegal encampment on @NYU property.” Among the items found, there was a poster with the messages: “Occupy the Occupiers,” “Disrupt/Reclaim/ Destroy,” “Long Live the Intifada,” “Death to Israeli Real Estate,” and “Death to America.” Another poster was titled: “Enough with De-Escalation Trainings; Where are the Escalation Trainings!” The @NYPDnews proudly protects everyone’s right to free speech and peaceful protest. There is somebody radicalizing our students.” "Somebody is radicalizing out students" Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz spoke after NYU and New School raid this morning, "we will find out who that is". Daughtry said officers found “gas masks, ear plugs, helmets, goggles, tape, hammers, knives, ropes, and a book on TERRORISM” in Hamilton Hall. Pencils, books, laptops, those are the tools of students and what you expect to find on a college campus. But here’s what the NYPD found in Hamilton Hall at Columbia University after we were able to arrest the protestors and agitators for commandeering and barricading themselves… pic.twitter.com/EKQV6nJySu — NYPD Deputy Commissioner, Operations Kaz Daughtry (@NYPDDaughtry) May 3, 2024 “These are not the tools of students protesting, these are the tools of agitators, of people who were working on something nefarious. Thankfully, your NYPD was able to prevent whatever they were planning and stop them before they could do it,” Daughtry added. “Continue to peacefully and lawfully protest; but know that if you engage in illegal conduct, the NYPD will hold you responsible and hold you accountable—someone has to.” CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP The findings appear to back up statements made by New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who said on Wednesday that the anti-Israel protest at Columbia has been influenced by “outside agitators” who appeared to be trained.

Rep. Banks Grills Biden’s Labor Sec On Claim That Apprentice Programs Are Racist, Sexist

Rep. Banks Grills Biden’s Labor Sec On Claim That Apprentice Programs Are Racist, Sexist

A Republican congressman grilled the Biden administration’s Secretary of Labor Julie Su over a proposed rule that would force companies involved in the Department of Labor’s apprenticeship program to implement diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) measures. If enacted, the proposed rule would seek to “diversify the National Apprenticeship System by enhancing worker protections and equity,” embedding DEI practices in the nationwide program to connect employers with workers looking for skilled labor opportunities. Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN) highlighted for Su during a hearing on the rule an agency document claiming that many apprenticeship programs involved in the DOL initiative are “actively hostile” to the idea of hiring women or racial minorities. “Can you explain what that means?” Banks asked, referencing the claim that many employers involved in the apprenticeship program are hostile to those who are not white men. “Do you agree that some registered apprenticeship programs are managed by racists? And if so, who are they?” Su explained that she wasn’t familiar with the document referenced by Banks before adding, “I  think that there is no reason why we should not be able to tap into the full talent and ability and promise of every single American in every single community.” Banks told The Daily Wire that the Biden administration uses flawed research to push its DEI agenda, but that policies associated with the leftwing ideology are detrimental to the country. “The Biden administration has no choice but to rely on junk science and lies to sell its woke agenda. The honest truth is that DEI is making America weaker and more divided.” Banks challenged Su again on the DOL document. “The recommendations also — say that registered apprenticeships have been ‘the domain of white able-bodied men.’ That’s a direct quote from the recommendation from the committee in your department,” Banks noted before asking “Do you agree with that comment?” “Is having fewer white men in apprenticeships the goal of all of the DEI provisions in the proposed rule?” Banks went on to press, with Su responding, “Absolutely not.” The Congressman from Indiana turned his attention to a portion of the rule that would demand that states submit reports outlining their efforts to diversify apprenticeship programs. Banks noted that the rule “would require states to submit a strategic plan for increasing participation from underserved communities that include the current participation by each race and demographic group and set specific targets for increasing participation by each race.” “Will the Department punish states that do not meet the proposed rules’ racial quotas?” Banks asked. Su dodged the question again, saying, “We have never gone wrong in this country when we have expanded opportunities,” adding, “I don’t even know what punitive scheme you are talking about.” One government document advocating for the use of DEI criteria in apprenticeship programs relies on a debunked study from consulting firm McKinsey and Company to incorrectly assert that greater diversity led to increased profitability for corporations. McKinsey’s flawed studies were also used by the Biden administration’s Pentagon to justify the implementation of the DEI agenda. The Biden administration has directed the entirety of the federal bureaucracy and the military to implement DEI practices, leveraging the might of the administrative state to codify leftist ideology as a matter of official government policy. Former President Trump and his allies have committed to firing bureaucrats who’ve pushed the leftwing agenda and who may otherwise undermine his policy efforts. “We will pass critical reforms making every executive branch employee fireable by the president of the United States,” Trump pledged at a rally. “The deep state must be brought to heel.” Others are preparing for the potential outflow of bureaucrats, with Trump’s allies assembling a personnel database of those who might serve in the next administration through the Project 2025 Presidential Transition Project, an initiative from the Heritage Foundation that seeks to “pave the way for an effective conservative Administration.”

Trump, DeSantis Signal Their Private Meeting Was Excellent: ‘I Am Very Happy’

Former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis both signaled this week that they were happy with the outcome of their recent private meeting and that they are both committed to working together moving forward. The meeting in Miami, Florida, on Sunday was set up by real estate broker Steve Witkoff, who is a friend of Trump and has a relationship with DeSantis. Witkoff also attended the meeting. “I am very happy to have the full and enthusiastic support of Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida,” Trump posted on social media. “We had a great meeting.” “The conversation mostly concerned how we would work closely together to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN,” he continued. “Also discussed was the future of Florida, which is FANTASTIC! I greatly appreciate Ron’s support in taking back our Country from the Worst President in the History of the United States. November 5th is a BIG DAY!!!” The New York Times reported that the three men “met alone in a private room at Shell Bay,” a development and golf club that Witkoff owns. Trump is looking for DeSantis’ help in fundraising to keep up with President Joe Biden’s donations, and DeSantis is looking to get back to the point where he is widely viewed by many as the future of the Republican Party, as a poll conducted earlier this year found that he is the frontrunner for the party’s nomination in 2028. DeSantis said during a Fox News interview on Thursday that he and Trump connected on a lot of things during their meeting, including on how their families were doing. The governor said that he was going to be “active in a variety of capacities” to help Trump and other Republican candidates win their races this fall. CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP “It was just a good meeting and a good conversation,” he said. “He understands the importance of this election.” “He understands the damage that Biden is doing, and I think you would see 180 degree different policies if we’re able to win in November, which it’s important that we do,” he added.

‘Soulless Monster’: Kevin Spacey Faces New Sexual Assault Allegations In Upcoming Documentary

Kevin Spacey is facing new sexual assault allegations from nearly a dozen men in an upcoming U.K. documentary and has hit back, claiming he’s “being attacked” to boost ratings. Channel 4’s “Spacey Unmasked” two-part documentary highlights accusations from a variety of men who accused the “House of Cards” star of sexual misconduct over the span of five decades, ranging from his teenage years to his time as a star in Hollywood, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It also includes accusations from his time as an artistic director at London’s Old Vic theater from 2004-2015. “I felt like I was staring at a soulless monster,” Daniel, an actor, said in the documentary produced by RoastBeef productions. Another actor named Scott alleged, “If you don’t pay the toll in sexual favors, you’ll have a decent career, but you won’t see your name in lights.” None of the men featured in the documentary were involved in Spacey’s sexual assault trial in London last year that resulted in the 64-year-old actor being acquitted. And all but one have never spoken out to accuse Spacey of various sexual misconduct, the outlet noted. Kevin Spacey is firing back against an upcoming documentary series about him. “I will not sit back and be attacked by a dying network’s one-sided ‘documentary’ about me in their desperate attempt for ratings. There’s a proper channel to handle allegations against me and it’s not… pic.twitter.com/NuvQ510p8C — Variety (@Variety) May 2, 2024 Following news of the upcoming documentary, Spacey took to X and wrote, “I will not sit back and be attacked by a dying network’s one-sided ‘documentary’ about me in their desperate attempt for ratings.” “There’s a proper channel to handle allegations against me and it’s not Channel 4,” Spacey said. “Each time I have been given the time and a proper forum to defend myself, the allegations have failed under scrutiny and I have been exonerated.” “Over the last week, I have repeatedly requested that Channel4 afford me more than 7 days to respond to allegations made against me dating back 48 years and provide me with sufficient details to investigate these matters,” he added. CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP “Channel 4 has refused on the basis that they feel that asking for a response in 7 days to new, anonymized and non-specific allegations is a ‘fair opportunity’ for me to refute any allegations made against me,” Spacey continued. “Channel 4 and RoastBeef TV may find themselves ‘speechless,’ but I no longer will be.” Channel 4 released a statement to THR that read, “Kevin Spacey has been given sufficient opportunity to respond.” In July 2023, the “Superman Returns” star was acquitted on all nine of the sexual assault charges against him in the U.K., The Hollywood Reporter noted. Spacey previously pleaded not guilty to the nine allegations that he had sexually assaulted four men between 2004 and 2013 in London, Reuters noted. The allegations ranged from unwanted touching to aggressive fondling — and, in one case, performing oral sex on an unconscious actor. Spacey was one of the most prominent figures accused of sexual misconduct during the start of the #MeToo era. The documentary is set to premiere in the U.K. on May 6 and 7, with its U.S. air dates on Max and Investigation Discovery to be announced soon, the outlet noted.

Residents Secede From Crumbling, Crime-Infested City. Leftists Cry Racism.

In the late 90’s, a veteran and father of three named Norman Browning took a job as a volunteer coach at Woodlawn High School in East Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Browning had been educated by Baton Rouge’s public schools and he wanted to give back to the community. But very quickly, he realized that Woodlawn was very different from the school it used to be. For one thing, there wasn’t much discipline. Teachers didn’t have close relationships with parents, and didn’t seem particularly interested in doing their jobs. Test scores were abysmal. Additionally, demographics had shifted dramatically. Students were poorer than they used to be. And there wasn’t much of the fabled “diversity” that we’re told is so important. More than half of the student body was black. Meanwhile, Baton Rouge and its schools were becoming increasingly violent. (Currently it’s one of the ten most dangerous cities in the country). Here’s just one recent example of a common sight in Baton Rouge schools: So there’s a brawl in the school, and then the parents show up and they get involved in the brawl too. And then a gun turns up, and the cops aren’t remotely surprised by any of this. This kind of thing has been happening consistently in Baton Rouge for the past decade. As the Daily Mail reports, on a single day in 2013, Browning observed “as many as six separate fights between unruly students.” Instead of shaking his head and moving on — which he very easily could have done — Browning decided on a different course of action. As the Daily Mail reports, Browning decided to help lead a breakaway movement to effectively secede from East Baton Rouge parish and incorporate a new city called St. George. This new city would have schools that admit students who actually want to learn, and teachers who want to teach. WATCH: The Matt Walsh Show The idea was a longshot. Other movements to incorporate new cities and secede, most notably the effort by Buckhead to secede from Atlanta in Georgia, have fallen short. That’s mainly because local politicians — including conservatives — have stood in the way.  But — after a campaign that took the better part of a decade — in 2019, voters finally approved a ballot initiative to create St. George. What followed were years of legal battles that ended last week, when the Louisiana Supreme Court ruled in a 4-3 decision that St. George can indeed incorporate. St. George will be a 60-square mile area, with a population of more than 85,000 residents. (For comparison, Baton Rouge is 76 square miles, with a population of more than 200,000).  That’ll make St. George one of the largest cities in the state. They’ll have their own mayor, public services, and city council. Watch: A key part of the Louisiana Supreme Court’s ruling is that, contrary to what Baton Rouge claimed, St. George has the financial means to be self-sustaining. And that’s not surprising. Taxpayers in the area that’s now known as St. George pay roughly two-thirds of the total tax revenue of the government of East Baton Rouge. But they receive only about one-third of the government’s expenses in return. And, despite paying all these taxes, St. George residents haven’t been represented in the mayor’s office in Baton Rouge in modern history. In other words, St. George is vital for East Baton Rouge’s economy. And in return for all the tax revenue St. George has generated, Baton Rouge has done basically nothing for St. George. They made their neighborhood more dangerous and their schools even worse. And on top of that, the people of St. George have no real representation in local government. So now East Baton Rouge isn’t going to get that tax revenue anymore, or at least not anywhere near the same amount. In fact, St. George residents are currently seeking tens of millions of dollars in back taxes that they’ve paid to the East Baton Rouge parish government since 2019. You have to wonder why this isn’t happening more often. Governments that don’t provide basic services or representation for their citizens don’t deserve tax money from their citizens. That’s a pretty intuitive principle. And there’s no rule that says you can’t make your own city if you want to. Quite the opposite. The right of free association is a fundamental part of the constitution. So why isn’t this more commonplace? One reason might be that anyone who attempts to incorporate a sane, high-functioning city will immediately be defamed as a racist. Predictably, that’s been the main reaction from the Left to the incorporation of St. George. There has been no reckoning about the failures of Baton Rouge’s leadership whatsoever. Here for example is a former president of the NAACP in Baton Rouge, reacting to the ruling of the Louisiana Supreme Court: The NAACP guy starts off by saying that some of the people leading the secession movement are on the school board, so they’re responsible for the failing schools. Apparently these school board members should have used their vast influence in order to prevent brawls from constantly breaking out. They also should have forced the students to be smarter, the teachers to care more about their jobs, and parents to actually parent their children. Then his argument devolves into accusing everyone in St. George of racism. They didn’t stay and try to fix East Baton Rouge’s broken school system, so they must be bigots who just want to get away from black people. This is one of the stock responses you’ll hear on the Left in response to the secession of St. George. For example, on Twitter, a “black activist” named Samuel Sinyangwe wrote: “They’re ‘seceding’ from a majority-Black city to create a whites-only enclave in Louisiana.” Just as a factual matter, what this activist is saying about the new city isn’t true. It’s not a “whites-only enclave” because there are black people living in it. Specifically, 12% of the population is black, which is roughly the same percentage of black people you’ll find in Barack Obama’s preferred island, Martha’s Vineyard. It also mirrors the overall percentage of black people in the United States at large, which stands at around 14%. In other words, these activists calling St. George a “whites-only enclave” are also, in effect, calling the entire country a “whites-only enclave.” Additionally, Woodlawn High School, which I mentioned earlier, is within the limits of the new city of St. George. This school, with a lot of black students attending, is not being abandoned by this new city. The point is to improve its leadership so that there’s more learning and less fighting. Of course, if you let these activists talk a little more, it becomes very clear what they’re really upset about. They’re not upset about racism or whatever. They know that East Baton Rouge, like so many other cities in this country, is dysfunctional — and no sane person would want to continue funding it with their tax dollars. What bothers these activists is that their source of funding is about to go to zero. Their cash cow is abandoning them. They will have to be productive for once and solve their own problems, without taking other people’s money and wasting it. That NAACP president in Baton Rouge eventually gets around to admitting this. Listen: “It’s pulling a lot of the resources and the tax bases from Baton Rouge. Stuff that is used to keep our city stable. … This is going to be paid for on the backs of poor black folks.” There’s finally some honesty there. It’s true that, without St. George, Baton Rouge will probably have a lot of financial problems to deal with. But the people responsible for those problems are not living in St. George. They’re running Baton Rouge, which is losing population by the day. As the Louisiana Supreme Court said in its decision: “Baton Rouge has arguably experienced a windfall by collecting taxes in St. George without returning proportionate money and services. Incorporation will allow the money paid by St. George citizens to stay in St. George … The record establishes the population of St. George is increasing. Conversely, the population of Baton Rouge is declining.” As St. George creates its new school system and builds out its infrastructure, it’s very likely that Baton Rouge’s population will continue to decline. That’s why, already, there’s an effort by Baton Rouge activists to get the Louisiana Supreme Court to reconsider its decision. But that will probably fail, as it should. For one thing, some of the economic success of St. George will almost certainly benefit Baton Rouge in a variety of ways. St. George will keep many more people in the area, and the residents there will still pay for some services provided by the government of East Baton Rouge. But more importantly, if St. George continues to thrive, it will send a very clear signal to dysfunctional governments all over the country. And that signal is: Stop wasting our tax dollars, or we’ll leave — and we’ll take our tax dollars with us. That’s how our system was always supposed to work. Our country was founded on the principle that governments cannot lawfully tax people without representing them or working for their benefit. And with the secession of St. George from the capital city of Louisiana, for the first time in recent memory, that principle is back. Hopefully there’s much more to come.
