Spotify subscribers rise to 236 million after record year

Spotify’s growing userbase. | Image: Spotify Spotify now boasts 236 million Premium subscribers‚ a 4 percent increase over last quarter‚ while its total number of monthly active users rose 5 percent to 602 million. The announcement came as part of its fourth quarter earnings release‚ which covers the three months ending on December 31st. Over the course of 2023‚ Spotify’s userbase and premium subscribers grew by 113 and 31 million‚ respectively‚ setting records for the company. The results cap off a year that included both cost-cutting and price increases for the world’s largest audio streaming service. Last December the company announced it would be laying off 17 percent of its workforce‚ or over 1‚500 people‚ in what was its third major round of layoffs in 2023. Spotify also... Continue reading…

YouTube is experimenting with red‚ blue‚ and green video feeds

Some app users are seeing options to filter homepage videos by green‚ blue‚ or red. | Illustration: Alex Castro / The Verge YouTube is testing a new feature that allows users to filter videos on their home feed by color‚ creating a more visually cohesive and pleasing experience when browsing. 9to5Google and users on Lemmy have reported seeing a new prompt window appear on the YouTube mobile app‚ asking users if they’re “craving something new‚” with options to create a video feed by red‚ blue‚ or green hues. This is an experimental feature and hasn’t been rolled out widely. YouTube spokesperson Allison Toh confirmed to The Verge that it’s currently available to “select users on Android and iOS mobile devices.” The company did not explain why it was developing such a feature‚ however‚ or provide a timeline for when (or if) it will be widely available. ... Meta says you better disclose your AI fakes or it might just pull them

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Meta will start labelling AI-generated photos uploaded to Facebook‚ Instagram‚ and Threads over the coming months as election season ramps up around the world. The company will also begin punishing users who don’t disclose if a realistic video or piece of audio was made with AI. Nick Clegg‚ Meta’s president of global affairs‚ said in an interview that these steps are meant to “galvanize” the tech industry as AI-generated media becomes increasingly difficult to discern from reality. The White House has pushed hard for companies to watermark AI-generated content. In the meantime‚ Meta is building tools to detect synthetic media even if its metadata has been altered to obfuscate AI’s role in its creation‚ according to Clegg. Meta already... Continue reading…

Apple Vision Pro international release roadmap leaked‚ and it’s good news

Apple Vision Pro international release roadmap leaked‚ and it’s good news

When will Apple release Vision Pro on international markets? According to the latest supply chain report by the Wall Street News (via ITHome)‚ it won't take long. The publication says China should get this spatial computer as early as April but "no later than May." Supply chain information reveals that Apple Vision Pro registration process is nearing completion‚ which means the device can soon be sold in the country. Interestingly‚ it's unclear if Apple is going to rebrand its spatial computer or reach an agreement with Huawei‚ which owns the "Vision Pro" brand right. If an agreement is impossible‚ Apple could use its Reality brand‚ which Bloomberg's Mark Gurman previously reported that Cupertino was considering. Before Apple Vision Pro was announced‚ the journalist said the company could call the spatial computer Reality Pro or Reality One‚ which would use the xrOS operating system. The journalist also helps corroborate Apple Vision Pro's international expansion roadmap‚ as in 2023‚ he suggested that Apple would aim for an expansion to Canada‚ the United Kingdom‚ and China as Apple's top priorities. Image source: Apple Inc. Since English is the common language in the UK and Canada (although the latter might benefit from a French localization as well)‚ it would be easier to expand Vision Pro to these countries before adding China to the list. Gurman also reported that France and Germany could also be in the first batch of an Apple Vision Pro international expansion‚ followed by Hong Kong‚ Japan‚ Korea‚ and Australia. That said‚ it all depends on the supply chain for Apple to start releasing this spatial computer in more countries. If these reports are accurate‚ Apple Vision Pro's international expansion should mean this spatial computer could be available in ten regions by the end of the year. Americas: The United States Canada Europe: The United Kingdom Germany France Asia: China Hong Kong Japan Korea Oceania: Australia BGR will keep following Vision Pro's latest news as we learn more about them. Vision Pro has two big flaws‚ and Apple can’t really fix them

One of the perks of not being able to buy the Apple Vision Pro simultaneously with US buyers is that I get to find out all the information about it before I get my hands on it. The good‚ the bad‚ and the outright dumb (driving a Tesla with a Vision Pro). It turns out that the spatial computer has two fatal flaws I wouldn't have expected from an Apple device in 2024. First‚ if you forget the Vision Pro password‚ you'll have to go to an Apple store to reset the spatial computer. There's nothing you can do at home about it.  Secondly‚ the Vision Pro doesn't have a way to locate it. If anybody steals it‚ or you misplace it‚ you won't be able to retrieve it via Find My. Apple Watch Ultra’s big microLED upgrade has reportedly been delayed

Apple Watch Ultra’s big microLED upgrade has reportedly been delayed

For over a year‚ we have heard that a microLED Apple Watch Ultra is slated to release in 2026. Now‚ a supply chain report by the Korean version of The Elec says this model could be delayed until 2027 or later. Interestingly‚ rumors started by predicting Apple was readying this Apple Watch Ultra update for a 2024 release. It was later postponed to 2025‚ then 2026... Hopefully‚ it could land in 2027. The Elec says the biggest obstacle to mass production of the microLED Apple Watch is its manufacturing cost‚ including production yield. If Apple were to produce this display now‚ a 2-inch screen could cost Cupertino around $150‚ while the existing OLED display costs $38. The publication says that Apple's consumer selling price of a product with a panel price of $150 is " known to be around $1‚500." Since Apple promotes the Watch Ultra for $799‚ the Watch could practically double the price if the company wanted to release it sooner rather than later. Although this particular upgrade might be holding users from upgrading to the Apple Watch Ultra 2 or even the possible 2024 model‚ it's possible that this 2027 timeframe could offer way more benefits than just a display change. While it's rumored that Apple is planning sleep apnea detection for the 2024 Apple Watch‚ it's also planning to roll out blood pressure sensors in phases. While the first iteration will just tell a user if their blood pressure is trending upward‚ a 2027 version could have the ability to provide exact numbers and even diagnose related conditions. In addition‚ Apple is putting all its efforts into a blood glucose sensor for a future Apple Watch. While it's unclear if the company will be able to pull a non-invasive system‚ it's easier to predict this technology could be presented in 2027 rather than 2024. BGR will keep following the latest microLED Apple Watch Ultra reports. Below‚ you can learn more about the future Apple Watch Series 10. OLED iPad Pro will definitely cost more‚ but not as much as leaks claimed

Apple is on the verge of announcing its OLED iPad Pro. While rumors suggested that this tablet would be very expensive‚ it seems the company is indeed planning a price hike‚ but not in a way that would kill its pro lineup with an absurd price. According to the latest DigiTimes report (via MacRumors)‚ Apple's 11-inch OLED iPad Pro would cost less than $1‚000‚ with the 13-inch model costing between $1‚200 and $1‚300. This is far better than these models' rumored $1‚500 to $2‚000 price range. That said‚ the publication believes the price increase could be up to $160 for each model. DigiTimes doesn't reveal its source‚ but the company attributes the increased cost to the OLED panels. Besides the new display‚ iOS 17.4 beta files suggest that Apple is planning to place the front-facing camera of this iPad at the top when it's in landscape orientation. With this change‚ it would be easier to participate in video call conferences‚ as iPad users usually have their tablets in landscape orientation most of the time. In addition‚ it seems Apple is working on enabling the Find My feature for the Apple Pencil. Although it's unclear at this moment if this Pencil will work like a MagSafe Wallet or AirTag‚ at least iPadOS will always remind you when you attach the Pencil from your iPad. Besides that‚ expect a new M3 chip‚ an improved design‚ and an all-new Magic Keyboard that will make the OLED iPad Pro look more like a MacBook Pro. That said‚ if these new accessories also avoid draining too much battery from this iPad‚ it seems the last thing Apple will need to improve will be iPadOS 18‚ as the hardware will be everything anyone could ever want. BGR will keep following the latest rumors of this iPad.
