The First Water Source That Will Disappear in a Crisis

Without water you’re not going to survive. It’s so important that‚ as a prepper‚ if you haven’t ensured an adequate supply of clean‚ drinkable water for yourself you might as well not bother doing anything else‚ either. Lack of water will kill you quicker than just about anything else‚ except for lack of shelter. That […] The post The First Water Source That Will Disappear in a Crisis appeared first on Ask a Prepper.

The Power Use of a Dry Check

The Power Use of a Dry Check

A viewer asked to see how much power is used during a Dry Check. Spoiler: It's less than 1.5 kWh Want to support this channel? By clicking on the links‚ you can explore the products and tools I use. https://www.amazon.com/shop/schoolreports --------------------------------------------------- Harvest Right - If you are thinking of buying a freeze dryer‚ please consider supporting us by purchasing through our link. It helps us and costs you nothing! https://affiliates.harvestright.com/995.html ─────────────── Before buying a freeze dryer‚ perhaps research to find out more about the downside of the machine; some people have problems with their machine and it's big and heavy and hard to return! When trying to decide what to freeze dry you can start by asking why. Start by asking yourself this question. Why are you freeze drying food? Knowing this should help you decide what you should freeze dry first. I'm freeze drying because: Just to freeze dry leftovers? You want to make your own food for camping/backpacking? For if/when the SHTF? For a short term emergency? You have your own garden and want to freeze dry the food? You love Costco but don't have a family of 6? You are good at finding the food sales but only have 1 freezer? When you cook homemade chili just for yourself you make 10 gallons? Because you have 3 full freezers and are worried about power outages? If I knew then what I know now‚ I would have freeze dried things in a different order. Or maybe not‚ because I started freeze drying because we had 3 full freezers‚ I was thinking of getting another one‚ and I decided I should buy a walk-in freezer instead. I started looking into walk-ins and realized they were expensive to buy (even used ones) AND expensive to own and operate. Then I found out Harvest Right was making home sized freeze dryers. One of my first thoughts was "I like Mountain House!" I have used their food for backpacking almost 45 years and we even kept some in our travel trailer‚ for just in case. Freeze dried food will stay fresh for many years and be ready and waiting when you need it. We do videos showing how we are using our Harvest Right Freeze Dryer to freeze dry food for long term storage. (We have the medium size machine that we got in August of 2017) We talk about how to load and unload the freeze dryer‚ how to know if the food is dry‚ is it better to freeze dry raw food or cooked food‚ and do a few taste tests. Freeze dried food is also great for prepping or just for camping and snacking! We have been getting our Mylar bags and oxygen absorbers for PackFreshUSA.com and have been happy with the products and service we have received from them. --They are not a sponsor‚ we just like their stuff. Robot Reveals Story Of A 600-Year-Old Medieval Shipwreck In Norway

Maritime archaeologists have recently returned to the site of a sunken medieval shipwreck to carry out a new geophysical survey‚ hoping to uncover more of the vessel's long-lost story.Known as the Avaldsnes ship‚ the 600-year-old wreck is found in a shallow body of water less than 1 meter (3 feet) deep in an intertidal environment near Avaldsnes‚ a village on the island of Karmøy in southwestern Norway. The shipwreck is well-known and has been studied for decades. However‚ researchers at the University of Stavanger and Stavanger Maritime Museum wanted to gain a deeper understanding of the sunken artifact with the help of new technology.Using a robotic boat‚ known as an Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV)‚ the team gathered geophysical data about the artifact and surrounding area‚ allowing them to create an accurate 3D model of the shipwreck."Ultimately‚ a detailed 3D model can expose essential information like horizontal and vertical distribution of the embedded remains‚ depth of burial‚ structure of the hull and construction details of the shipwreck‚" the study authors wrote in the paper.Photogrammetry and 3D-model of the preserved wreck.Image credit: M. Ditta via H. H. RavnÃ¥s et al.‚ Journal of Maritime Archaeology‚ 2024 (CC BY 4.0 DEED)“The ASV provides fast mobilization and easy access to areas where it usually would be difficult to steer traditional boats. Operating an unmanned working platform allows for a very time-efficient‚ non-invasively study of the seafloor and the subsurface features by collecting high-resolution seismic data in a dense grid‚” they added.Today‚ Avaldsnes is a sleepy village of just a few thousand people‚ but it was a bustling hub of power and trade from the early Bronze Age until the end of the Middle Ages.During the medieval period‚ the coastal settlement was the site of a fortified royal palace and a key port that was used by the Hanseatic League‚ a giant confederation of merchant guilds and market towns in Central and Northern Europe. It’s safe to assume that the Avaldsnes ship was journeying within this busy trade network. The wreck is a medium-sized merchant ship‚ which the researchers describe as a “fine vessel‚ built by highly skilled shipbuilders”. Previous analysis of its timber indicates the ship was made in the region of the Vistula estuary in present-day Poland in the year 1395 CE. It sank shortly after as a result of an onboard fire‚ most likely around 1399 to 1415 CE.Archaeologists also discovered that animal hair and moss had been placed between the planks to act as a sealant. They also found evidence of mats made out of twigs‚ which were perhaps used to protect the cargo from humidity and harsh weather. The new study is published in the Journal of Maritime Archaeology.

The Greek Meaning Behind

The Greek Meaning Behind "Arctic" And "Antarctic" Is Surprisingly Funny

Just like with left and right‚ poison vs venom‚ and Ant and Dec‚ a lot of people get confused between the Arctic and Antarctica. But for that last one‚ there is a very simple way to remember which is which – and it has been hiding right there in the name all along. Some people remember it by the animals that live there. Polar bears live in the Arctic in the Northern Hemisphere‚ while penguins in the Antarctic in the Southern Hemisphere. As long as you can remember the distressing images of polar bears clinging to diminishing ice‚ this can help you remember that polar bears live in the Arctic‚ an ocean covered in ice and surrounded by land (there's no land mass at the North Pole); rather than the Antarctic‚ a continent‚ covered in a continental glacier. There's an even easier way than that. The word Arctic is derived from "Arktos"‚ the Greek word for "bear". You may have already put it together in your head and realized that the prefix "Anti-" means "opposite"‚ pretty much defining a whole continent by its lack of bears.          Although this name could be referring to the actual bears that are in the Arctic‚ it's more likely that it's based on the constellation Ursa Major (the "great bear" in Latin)‚ the largest constellation in the Northern sky. Either way‚ if you look up and see a bear‚ polar or great‚ you'll know you're in the Arctic. If you find yourself having some profound disappointment about the lack of bears in your location‚ you're probably in the Antarctic‚ or about to have an encounter with a well-camouflaged bear in the Arctic. All “explainer” articles are confirmed by fact checkers to be correct at time of publishing. Man arrested after showing his father’s severed head on Youtube

On Wednesday‚ a Pennsylvania man‚ Justin Mohn of Middletown Township‚ was ordered to be held without bail after being charged with the murder of his father‚ including the disturbing act of showcasing his decapitated head in a YouTube video‚ according to a statement from the local prosecutor’s office. In a Bucks County court on Wednesday‚ Mohn faced charges of first-degree murder‚ abuse of a corpse‚ and possession of an instrument of crime. The 32-year-old was ordered to remain in custody by the judge‚ as stated by the district attorney’s office. The incident unfolded on Tuesday evening when the police responded to a call from Mohn’s mother at the family’s Middletown Township home. Upon arrival‚ they discovered Mohn’s 68-year-old father‚ Michael‚ decapitated in a bathroom‚ surrounded by a significant amount of blood‚ with a knife and machete found in the bathtub‚ according to the prosecutor. Justin Mohn‚ a suspect arrested in his father’s murder and decapitation‚ speaks on a Youtube broadcast from his home. Following the gruesome act‚ Mohn posted a 14-minute video on YouTube titled “Mohn’s Militia – Call to Arms for American Patriots‚” as detailed in a probable-cause affidavit available online. In the video‚ Mohn twice displayed his father’s head to viewers‚ identifying him by name and proclaiming that “he is now in hell for eternity‚” as he read from a script‚ according to the police document. He also said his father‚ who worked for the federal government‚ was a traitor‚ railed against the Biden administration and described himself as a militia leader‚ NBC News reported. Hours after police responded to the grisly scene‚ authorities took Mohn into custody at the Fort Indiantown Gap‚ a National Guard training center in Lebanon County‚ about 110 miles (177 km) from the home. Mysterious UFO found on a small island in Antarctica

On the coast of Two Hills Island near Modev Peak‚ researchers‚ using Google Maps‚ discovered a structure that resembles an alien spaceship. Considering the growing interest in extraterrestrial topics‚ users on the popular online forum Reddit decided to support this discussion and share insights about the peculiar finding. The proposed spacecraft bears a striking resemblance to the conventional depiction in science fiction: spherical in shape‚ featuring a broad metal edge‚ with dimensions estimated to be around 12 meters in diameter. One anomalous aspect of the object is its positioning. Typically‚ ice formations along island shores exhibit different shapes due to wave exposure. However‚ the suggested spacecraft is lying on its side in an area relatively unaffected by water. The debate surrounding the object’s origin was further fueled by Eric Hecker‚ who claimed to have encountered “powerful machines” during his time in Antarctica and asserted contact with alien ships from distant outer space. It’s worth noting that Hecker‚ during his tenure at Raytheon Technologies Corporation‚ spoke about technologies that are challenging for contemporary individuals to comprehend. According to him‚ directed energy weapon technologies and neutrino detection systems at the South Pole station might possess unconventional functions and connections with extraterrestrial objects. Legio XIII Gemina bricks found in Vienna

Legio XIII Gemina bricks found in Vienna

An archaeological excavation of an elementary school in Vienna has uncovered bricks bearing the stamp of the Roman 13th Legion Gemina. The Kindermanngasse Elementary School is the fourth oldest school in Vienna and its location in the historic center of the city required that it undergo an archaeological exploration before a planned renovation. The Vienna City Archaeology department has been excavating the inner courtyard for several weeks and unearthed evidence of a large-scale Roman building — traves of wooden beams and post holes — from the 2nd century. Archaeologists believe it had an industrial purpose‚ perhaps the production of bricks‚ although so far there has been no smoking gun to explain the function of the building. In one trench the team found a pit filled with bricks stamped with the name of Legio XIII Gemina. They were likely the broken remnants of pilae stacks‚ the pillars of brick used to raise the floor for the hypocaust heating system. Vindobona was founded at the site of a settlement of the Celtic kingdom of Noricum. In the 1st century A.D.‚ the oppidum was absorbed into the Roman province of Pannonia and a fort was built there‚ part of a line of defenses alone the Danube limes (frontier). Legio XIII Gemina‚ descendant of the famous Thirteenth Legion that crossed the Rubicon with Julius Caesar in 49 B.C.‚ was transferred to Vindobona by the emperor Trajan in 98 A.D. Legio XIII built a permanent military fort in what would become the heart of modern-day Vienna‚ although they would not be stationed there long. They were replaced by Legio XIV Gemina in 101 A.D. The stone fortress was expanded and rebuilt over the centuries‚ with large stone walls constructed in the early 2nd century. The Kindermanngasse in the historic center of the city is less than two miles from the remains of homes of the legion’s officers found in previous excavations and other significant remains of the civilian settlement‚ but remains from the initial construction by Legio XIII are rare. The excavation is expected to come to an end early this month.
