In their latest attack on the integrity of the U.S. Supreme Court‚ House Democrats are urging Justice Clarence Thomas to recuse himself from a case involving former President Donald Trump’s eligibility to appear on Colorado’s Republican primary ballot. Their reasoning is simple‚ but dangerously misguided: Because Thomas’ wife‚ Ginni‚ has expressed opinions about Trump and the 2020 election‚ he should be barred from adjudicating any case involving Trump and elections. Such reasoning is unfair‚ unsound‚ unwarranted and strikingly hypocritical. In 2011‚ Judge Stephen Reinhardt of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals refused to recuse himself from a constitutional challenge to California’s Proposition 8 on same-sex marriage even though his wife had spoken publicly about the case and her organization‚ the ACLU of Southern California‚ had filed a friend-of-the-court brief arguing for the law to be struck down. Saying that his wife’s views “are hers‚ not mine‚ and I do not in any way condition my opinion on the positions she takes regarding any issues‚” the now-deceased Reinhardt declined to recuse himself and ruled against the ban. There was‚ of course‚ no left-wing outrage over Reinhardt’s decision. In fact‚ liberal ethics professor Stephen Gillers supported Reinhardt’s decision‚ arguing “a spouse’s views and actions‚ however passionately held and discharged‚ are not imputed to her spouse‚ and Judge Reinhardt is not presumed to be the reservoir and carrier of his wife’s beliefs.” Similarly‚ all one could hear from the Left was the quiet sound of crickets at night when Judge Nina Pillard of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit refused to recuse herself in cases including a challenge to the conditions of confinement of detainees at Guantanamo Bay‚ in which the ACLU took a position‚ even though her husband was that organization’s national legal director. Ginni Thomas’ relationship to the Trump case is‚ of course‚ far more attenuated than those instances. She has no involvement or direct interest in the case and has just as much of a right to comment on public matters as anyone else. Ginni Thomas did not lose her First Amendment rights when her husband—who was recently (and accurately) described by constitutional law professor Steven Calabresi as “incorruptible in every sense of that word”—became a judge. In addition to using Ginni Thomas as a cat’s-paw in a desperate attempt to try to change the balance of the Supreme Court‚ the Left has shamelessly smeared her character. Even a cursory view of the facts disproves House Democrats’ unfounded‚ thoroughly outlandish claim that Ginni Thomas “was instrumental in planning [the Jan. 6 rally] and bringing the insurrectionists to the Capitol.” Ginni Thomas fully cooperated with the Jan.  6 Committee‚ complying with document requests and participating in a thorough four-hour interview. Her name does not appear even once in the 845-page committee report. The Democrats’ “by any means necessary” attempt to tarnish Ginni Thomas with the events of Jan. 6 is a transparent ploy to inject politics into the Supreme Court‚ undermine its independence‚ and affect policy outcomes to achieve their political objectives. All of this comes atop their months-long effort to impose arbitrary and unreasonable ethical standards that would undermine the court’s independence. All the justices—both liberal and conservative—have made clear that they have long adhered to a Code of Conduct‚ which they reiterated in a recently released statement. Many of the guidelines to which the justices adhere go beyond those followed (or not‚ as the case may be) by members of Congress‚ exposing to anyone who cares to look that what the Democratic members who have been decrying false claims of judicial improprieties really want is “rules for thee‚ but not for me.” The latest attacks on Clarence Thomas are merely a continuation of the Left’s dangerous political campaign to exert pressure on the justices and to destroy the legitimacy of the Supreme Court because they are displeased with some of the court’s opinions. But however hard they try‚ and however much they squawk‚ they will once again fail. Clarence Thomas is not going anywhere. Have an opinion about this article? FIRST ON THE DAILY SIGNAL: The Anti-Defamation League flags “online amplifiers of LGBTQ+ hate” as extremists to be examined by law enforcement‚ a newly unearthed email shows. The revelation indicates that the Anti-Defamation League‚ “the leading anti-hate organization in the world‚” is specifically pushing law enforcement to scrutinize viral dissenters against transgender ideology‚ such as The Daily Wire’s Matt Walsh and The Manhattan Institute’s Chris Rufo. The ADL has historically focused on anti-semitism‚ but in recent years has directed heavy attention to hate and extremism. The ADL has described content pushing back against transgender ideology as both “dangerous” and “false‚” claiming that this content inspires “real-world extremist activities‚ threats‚ and even violence.” “The ADL‚ and similar organizations‚ are a key driver of government weaponization‚” Mike Howell‚ the director of the Oversight Project‚ a division of the Heritage Foundation‚ told The Daily Signal. “They provide the phony predication and intellectual cover in order to point the people with guns at their enemies. Our investigative work continues to expose examples of these groups driving government action.” (The Daily Signal is Heritage’s news outlet.) The Extremist Landscape Oversight’s Freedom of Information Act request to Washington State Fusion Center (a “unified counterterrorism” center) turned out a February 2023 email on “the extremist landscape” from the ADL. The email was sent to Tyler Phelan‚ an intelligence analyst at the center‚ from the ADL’s “Law Enforcement” address. The email bears the subject line: “White Supremacist Fight Clubs‚ Anti-LGBTQ+ Hate.” It then paints a picture of the “extremist landscape:” threats of Islamic terrorism‚ an alleged rise in white supremacist crews encouraging violence‚ and “online amplifiers of LGBTQ+ Hate” promoting “false narratives‚ escalating harassment of LGBTQ+ individuals.” This section on “LGBTQ+ Hate” describes content pushed by online actors “including the vilification of drag shows” and “baseless claims of ‘child grooming’ by LGBTQ+ people.” The ADL alleges that this content has “further endangered and isolated an already at-risk community‚” noting that “these accusations and stances have also been adopted by right-wing media personalities and disseminated on mainstream platforms.” “The growing online anti-LGBTQ+ bigotry puts LGBTQ+ individuals at greater risk of physical violence and harassment‚” the email notes. It refers readers to its blog for more information‚ and notes that ADL’s Center on Extremism monitors “extremism across the ideological spectrum” through investigators‚ analysts‚ researchers‚ and technical experts. ADL touts its Center on Extremism as “the nation’s foremost nongovernmental authority on extremism.” It is comprised of “investigators‚ analysts‚ researchers and technical experts who strategically monitor and expose extremist threats—on the internet and on the ground.” That email bears remarkable similarities in both wording and structure to the ADL’s blog post on “Online Amplifiers of Anti-LGBTQ+ Extremism” — a blog post that specifically names the viral “Libs of TikTok” social media account run by Chaya Raichik‚ the Gays Against Groomers social media account run by Jaimee Michell‚ the media company Blaze Media‚ Rufo‚ and Walsh. According to that blog post‚ the ADL is interested in the government targeting these types of individuals due to their influence online related to transgender ideology. “ADL is advocating for government partners to strengthen laws against perpetrators of online hate‚ as well as consulting with law enforcement partners to act on online hate speech that incites violence and/or credible threats‚” the blog post reads. “ADL will continue to develop community partnerships with LGBTQ+ leaders and organizations such as GLAAD‚ in efforts to counter hate speech with positive speech.” That article represents a collaboration between the pro-LGBTQ group GLAAD and the ADL intended to “counter anti-LGBTQ+ Extremism and Hate.” The collaboration explicitly aims to “alert law enforcement and community organizations to threats targeting LGBTQ+ individuals and institutions.” “You can draw a direct line from anti-LGBTQ content and accounts on social media to real world violence: from extremists showing up at drag shows to vandalism at LGBTQ community centers to bomb threats being called into children’s hospitals that care for transgender youth‚” GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in the November 2022 press release announcing the collaboration. It appears that the ADL email to the Washington State Fusion Center employee links to this blog post — the email includes links that The Daily Signal could not confirm‚ specifically on the phrase “online actors” and the phrase “baseless claims‚” referring to supposedly baseless claims of child grooming and the “vilification of drag shows.” The ADL did not respond to multiple requests for comment. Law Enforcement Denies Investigations Chris Loftis‚ director of communications for the Washington State Patrol‚ a key partner in the Washington State Fusion Center‚ denied that there are currently investigations into Walsh‚ Rufo‚ Raichik‚ Libs of TikTok‚ or Gays Against Groomers. He also said of Washington state law enforcement agencies that‚ though they might review information from “an organization like ADL‚” they would “recognize that they‚ like any organization or individual‚ would be organized and energized around core beliefs and mission thrusts that could impact their perspectives.” “Therefore‚ we treat every source of information the same‚ with appropriate appreciation and skepticism‚ regardless of where they might be on the political spectrum and do our due diligence assessing the validity of any information received‚” he added. “If‚ after that type of broad-spectrum and multiple source review‚ we have actionable intelligence on a credible threat‚ we take appropriate action.” “We do not investigate anyone or anything ‘at the direction of the Anti-Defamation League‚'” Loftis added‚ referencing The Daily Signal’s press inquiry. “We receive tips from a variety of sources and interested parties and we follow each to its logical conclusion to assess if any possible public safety threat actually exists.” The Online Amplifiers The ADL blog post on online amplifiers of “LGBTQ+ Hate” accuses both Raichik and Gays Against Groomers of perpetrating “false allegations” of “grooming” and repeatedly accuses Raichik‚ Michell‚ the Blaze‚ and Rufo of vilifying drag shows. It also describes Walsh as “one of the biggest purveyors of erroneous and harmful narratives surrounding gender-affirming care for transgender and non-binary youth‚” calling him an “anti-LGBTQ+ extremist commentator.” Walsh has particularly drawn the attention of gender ideologists through his “What is A Woman” documentary and his exposés of the hospitals and medical professionals across the U.S. who perform experimental transgender medical interventions on children and young people. Walsh regards the ADL’s tactics as “a very serious threat‚” he told The Daily Signal. “I’m not surprised that the enemies of free speech and common sense are using this tactic but I do find it deeply concerning‚” Walsh said. “Democrats (and the ADL is just an activist arm of the Democrat Party of course) clearly want to use force to shut down speech that threatens their narrative‚” Walsh said. “We’ve been moving in that direction for some time. I expect that if Biden wins re-election we will start to see‚ in the next year or two‚ outspoken conservatives getting fined and arrested on the grounds of ‘hate speech‚’ etc.  The ADL blog post also describes Rufo‚ widely known for his work exposing the ideological background and workings of critical race theory (a framework reinterpreting American society as systemically racist)‚ as “an anti-LGBTQ+ extremist.” “Previously known for his fearmongering around critical race theory‚ Rufo has now turned his focus to the alleged ‘dangers’ of ‘gender ideology’ – a baseless‚ decades-old conspiracy theory alleging that the progressive movement seeks to destroy traditional families and conservative values by expanding the rights of women and LGBTQ+ people‚” the blog post states. Rufo weighed in on the ADL’s efforts in a Tuesday phone interview. “The ADL is attempting to mobilize the government for the purposes of political persecution‚ putting our right to free speech at risk‚” he told The Daily Signal. “The fact that the ADL would like the government to investigate critics of transgender ideology under ‘domestic terrorism’ provisions is outrageous.” “I will not back down to this intimidation campaign—rather‚ I will fight harder than ever‚” he added. “If counterterrorism agents come knocking‚ I will tell them to pound sand. This is still America‚ and we still have the right to free speech.” The ADL also describes Raichik’s “Libs of TikTok” account as “anti-LGBTQ+ extremist social media” that “frequently targets educators‚ healthcare professionals and drag performers who either identify as LGBTQ+ or work on LGBTQ+-related issues.” “Notable narratives promoted by LoTT include an ‘investigation’ into Boston Children’s Hospital and a mega thread vilifying drag shows during Pride Month‚” the ADL post says‚ referring to when Raichik published video of the hospital promoting “gender-affirming” hysterectomies for young people. “Those targeted often report experiencing threats‚ harassment and real-world violence in the wake of the LoTT campaign against them.” Raichik told The Daily Signal that the ADL is heading down a “really dangerous road” by essentially saying that “criticizing someone or something means that you’re a criminal.” “Their whole brand is deciding who is an extremist‚ who is a racist‚ who is transphobic‚ who is a bigot‚ and then all of the corporations follow them and take cues from them‚” she noted. ADL’s Work With Law Enforcement The ADL did not respond to many requests for comment for this story. However‚ the organization notes on its website that it “believes law enforcement has a fundamental obligation to preserve civil rights and liberties in a democracy and is instrumental to efforts to protect people and communities from hate crimes and extremism.” The leftist organization‚ which has regional offices across the U.S.‚ claims that it provides law enforcement with “professional development tailored” to each agency’s needs and ranks. The ADL also says that it provides a number of trainings and “educational opportunities” for law enforcement agencies and personnel‚ though it has removed the page for those educational opportunities. An archived version of the page examined by The Daily Signal states that “an important part of our work is ensuring that law enforcement agencies and personnel at the local‚ state and federal levels understand the threats to vulnerable populations.” “In order to do this effectively‚ ADL shares our resources and expertise on extremism‚” the archived page states. “In 2020 alone‚ ADL’s Center on Extremism (COE) provided law enforcement with critical intelligence about extremism over 1‚000 times and tracked over 5‚000 new incidents of hate on our online‚ interactive H.E.A.T. Map.” ADL says that its efforts to work with law enforcement include “assisting” law enforcement in protecting people and communities from “hate and extremism — both online and on the ground‚” as well as “providing” law enforcement with “information and education to address emerging extremist threats‚ both on and offline. In 2014‚ according to the ADL‚ the Metropolitan Police Department adopted its recommendations “to improve its response to hate crimes and to strengthen the MPD’s relationship with the LGBTQ+ community.” Some of the ADL’s violent extremism modules for law enforcement include material on “elements of violent extremism” and “recognizing violent extremism‚” which includes an overview of the ADL’s perception of “extremist ideologies and groups.” Have an opinion about this article? Animals have a whole range of means to survive the cold‚ from thick fur and warm dens to simply sleeping through the cold winter months. Alligators might not be the first creatures that come to mind when thinking about survival tactics for cold weather‚ but videos reveal that freezing right along with the lake is the best way for them to get through a cold snap.In Texas and North Carolina‚ videos are emerging on social media of “gatorcicles”. Found in frozen bodies of water‚ these are alligators that have let the water freeze solidly around them. Only their noses and mouths poke out of the surface of the ice‚ allowing the animals to breathe. One video shared by gatorcountytx on TikTok showed exactly that.         IFLScience is not responsible for content shared from external sites.According to the South Carolina Aquarium‚ this is a process called brumation‚ a period of dormancy where the heart rate and other processes within the body slow down in response to cold weather. In alligators and other reptiles‚ it consists of a decreased body temperature‚ lethargy and decreased metabolism. As these animals are cold-blooded and require warmth from the sun for their metabolism‚ if the temperatures get too cold‚ they can die. However‚ this period of brumation typically lasts 4-5 months in response to cold weather. It's similar to hibernation as the animals go without eating‚ but it is distinct in that they will continue to drink and are not in quite as deep of a sleep state.The TikTok account 2guysandsomeland also shared a video of "swamp puppies" frozen in their habitat and it gives a good idea of how out of it these alligators are – the person in the video is able to "boop the snoot"‚ although that's definitely not recommended. In a rare event‚ the Sun has simultaneously released two mighty solar flares separated by 500‚000 kilometers (300‚000 miles).The last 48 hours have seen remarkable behavior on the Sun‚ even by the standards of its last‚ highly active‚ year. Two sunspots‚ AR3559 and AR3561‚ have been filmed flaring simultaneously. The flares do not reach X-class‚ even together‚ instead having a combined value of M5.1 (halfway through the second highest energy flare class). Nevertheless‚ the explosive duet is a rare phenomenon and a sign of the Sun’s current activity.Rather than a coincidence‚ the paired explosions are an example of “sympathetic solar flares‚” where magnetic loops in the solar corona trigger simultaneous explosions. Astronomers have known about sympathetic solar flares for decades‚ and analyzed thousands for patterns‚ but until recently we have lacked the ability to film them in all their glory. Moreover‚ with the flares sometimes more than 90 degrees apart‚ it’s often the case that only one is directly visible from Earth. One of the sunspots responsible‚ AR3561‚ has been labeled as hyperactive‚ having released more than a dozen M-class flares within 36 hours‚ along with at least seven C-class flares. AR3561 looks smaller and less intensely dark than AR3559. Indeed‚ in still photographs it doesn’t stand out next to the nearby cluster of sunspots collectively known as AR3556. However‚ it has developed exceptionally fast‚ not having been present at the start of the week‚ and is accompanying that growth with flares almost every hour. Solar astronomers say its magnetic complexity indicates an increased potential for more‚ and possibly more powerful‚ flares to come. Some of the flares have brought coronal mass ejections with them. According to Spaceweather.com‚ none of these are large enough‚ or approaching Earth directly enough‚ to be expected to produce major impacts here. However‚ minor geomagnetic storms (G1-class) are considered possible over the next three nights from glancing blows to Earth’s magnetosphere‚ particularly on Thursday and Friday. This is likely to be accompanied by auroral activity‚ but probably only at high latitudes.The combined flares‚ the majority of whose energy came from AR3359‚ managed to produce moderate radio blackouts‚ according to NOAA‚ mostly affecting the southern hemisphere.After the unexpected strength of solar activity last year‚ debate raged as to whether solar cycle 25‚ initially expected to peak in 2025‚ had reached its maximum early‚ or if this year would be bigger still. The last five months of 2023 had fewer sunspots than June-August‚ favoring the early peak theory. However‚ AR3561 appears to be trying to change that story on its own‚ and this year may be the most active we’ve seen for decades.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and a clutch of like-minded folks are constructing a monumental clock that’s designed to last for 10‚000 years. Its purpose‚ apparently‚ is to be an icon of “long-term thinking” and inspire people to dream far beyond the limited scope of a human lifetime.The project is the brainchild of computer scientist Danny Hillis who first drummed up the idea in the 1980s. Writing in an essay for WIRED Magazine in 1995‚ Hillis explained: “I want to build a clock that ticks once a year. The century hand advances once every 100 years‚ and the cuckoo comes out on the millennium… If I hurry‚ I should finish the clock in time to see the cuckoo come out for the first time.”His plan didn’t remain a lofty pipedream. To get the ball rolling‚ Hillis partnered up with Stewart Brand and founded the Long Now Foundation‚ a nonprofit that aims to “foster long-term thinking.” They’ve received support from Bezos‚ who’s reportedly injected $42 million into the construction of the giant clock. "Civilization is revving itself into a pathologically short attention span [...] Some sort of balancing corrective to the short-sightedness is needed‚” Brand said in a post explaining the philosophy of the clock.“Such a clock‚ if sufficiently impressive and well-engineered‚ would embody deep time for people. It should be charismatic to visit‚ interesting to think about‚ and famous enough to become iconic in the public discourse. Ideally‚ it would do for thinking about time what the photographs of Earth from space have done for thinking about the environment. Such icons reframe the way people think‚” he added.The 10‚000-Year Clock will be “hundreds of feet tall‚” although there’s no word yet on exact measurements‚ and will sit deep within a mountain in West Texas. It will feature dozens of vast dials that are built to last and a chime generator‚ which has been designed by ambient music wizard Brian Eno.         Installation of the clock began in 2018 (or the year 02018 as the Long Now Foundation likes to call it). However‚ preparation work – namely excavating the site for the clock – started long before. In 2012‚ Bezos released an update explaining they had just finished digging the 152-meter (500-foot) deep vertical shaft for the clock.According to the project’s website‚ no completion date has been set. I guess there’s no rush if you think in millennia-long timespans. For the time being‚ there is a scaled-down prototype of the clock on display at the Science Museum in London.The 10‚000-Year Clock has its critics. For some‚ the clock is a demonstration of ivory tower thinking‚ Silicon Valley utopianism‚ and obscene wealth. WIRED‚ which gave the clock its first public debut‚ published an article in 2020 titled The 10‚000-Year Clock Is a Waste of Time‚ which denounced the project as a "Gilded Age distraction".But hey‚ let’s see who’s laughing in 10‚000 years. 

The birthplaces of stars have never looked this good. Thanks to the keen infrared eye of JWST‚ which can see through some of the gas and dust that make up star-forming clouds‚ humans have gotten new insights into some incredible nebulae – and with beautiful pictures‚ too.The latest one is an image of N79 using the space telescope's Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI). N79 is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC)‚ one of the largest and closest satellite galaxies to our own‚ the Milky Way. MeixnerThe mid-infrared view provided by MIRI allows one to peer deep inside the nebula‚ highlighting the glowing moving gas which is located deeper inside the cloud. It would be invisible with a telescope that only sees the light that the human eye can see. And it’s not just shrouded gas and dust – there are also stars and proto-stars within the nebula‚ including an object bright enough to create the typical diffraction spike pattern.This pattern appears due to how the secondary mirror is being held in the telescope. The mirror is held by three struts‚ and as light moves around them‚ the light gets diffracted. Each strut produces two spikes 90 degrees from each other. That makes six spikes‚ but if you look at the picture you’ll notice that there are two extra spikes almost at the vertical. There is another feature that creates spikes‚ and that’s the hexagonal mirrors of the system. This also creates six spikes‚ but everything is aligned so four spikes overlap in the images‚ so there are only eight visible.N79 is similar to another nebula imaged by JWST called the Tarantula Nebula‚ or 30 Doradus‚ which is also located in the LMC. Both of these nebulae are producing stars at a rate not seen in our galaxy for billions and billions of years‚ and N79 is doing so twice as efficiently as 30 Doradus.Understanding star formation in the LMC gives us insight into the same phenomenon in the distant universe. The LMC is more primitive in composition and more active than the Milky Way‚ so it’s a good analogous of galaxies from the distant past. 

A firm hoping to place the first private space station into low-Earth orbit has taken its latest steps towards that goal‚ inflating and then blowing up a test module.Sierra Space‚ based in Colorado‚ designed an expandable module which is only inflated to its full capacity once it is in orbit. The Large Integrated Flexible Environment (LIFE) modules are over 6 meters (20 feet) tall‚ and comparable in size to an average family home‚ according to the company. The main advantage of expandable space stations‚ should everything go to plan‚ is how much living/working space they will provide per each (expensive) launch."Life will achieve 1/3 of the volume of the ISS in one launch‚" Leanne Thompson‚ Systems Engineer at Sierra Space‚ said in a video‚ "where that previously took 10 to 15 launches to achieve that same volume."               The module‚ made from woven materials that become rigid under pressure‚ was put to an Ultimate Burst Pressure (UBP) test at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. Essentially‚ as the name implies‚ you just keep on inflating the module until it can't take the pressure anymore and fails.It exploded pretty spectacularly‚ but that was to be expected. The International Space Station runs at the operational level of 101.3 kilopascal (14.7 psi)‚ which is about the atmospheric pressure at sea level. NASA recommends that modules should be able to withstand four times a maximum operating pressure of 104.8 kilopascal (15.2 psi). LIFE exceeded this by 27 percent‚ withstanding an impressive 531 kilopascals (77psi) before failing‚ nearly the pressure within a champagne bottle.“Over the past two years‚ our team has worked tirelessly to reach this point.
