Libya’s "Circles Of Life" Show Hints Of A Giant Ancient Aquifer Beneath The Sand

At first glance‚ southeastern Libya looks like an unforgiving land of sand and barren mountains. However‚ look closer and you’ll see clues that the desert is home to a massive underground oasis. Images taken by satellites and astronauts onboard the International Space Station (ISS) show that Libya’s Kufrah district is not as desolate as it first seems. Amid the vast swathes of golden sand‚ you can spot strange circles and odd patches of green. These blots are evidence of Libya’s struggle to stay hydrated. In 1983‚ the Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi initiated a colossal civil water works project called the Great Man-Made River (GMMR). Consisting of a vast network of underground pipes‚ it's considered to be the world's largest irrigation project and supplies the majority of all freshwater used in Libya. The water comes from the world's largest fossil water aquifer system‚ known as the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System. It was left behind some 10‚000 years ago when this region was a surprisingly lush landscape of rivers‚ lakes‚ and rain.Libya's Kufrah District was imaged on May 26‚ 2022. Look very closely to the right of the image and you may see some green.Image credit: MODIS/NASAThe aquifer is around 2 million square kilometers (772‚204 square miles) in size and lies beneath north-western Sudan‚ northeastern Chad‚ southeastern Libya‚ and much of Egypt. It’s an invaluable resource for these countries‚ which constantly battle with arid conditions. While much of the system is underground‚ imagery from low-Earth orbit shows signs of its presence. As explained by ESA‚ satellite imagery shows large circles embedded in the Al Kufrah Oasis‚ each of which has a diameter of nearly 1 kilometer (0.6 miles). Described as “Libya’s Circles of Life”‚ the circles are the product of numerous sprinklers that use water from the fossil aquifer to irrigate the land‚ allowing crops to grow. The fruits of this labor are also visible from the skies. As per NASA Earth Observatory‚ more recent photographs taken from the ISS show that a patch of green can be seen among the extensive sands of the Kufrah district.  The town of Al Jawf is like an oasis in the desert‚ literally.Image credit: ISS/NASA NASA Earth ObservatoryThis is Al Jawf‚ a town that owes much of its existence to the ancient aquifer that it sits on top of. Zoom into the photograph and you’ll see this small but significant settlement is covered in farms‚ all of which are irrigated by water from the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System.Libya‚ however‚ still has problems with its water supply. Water scarcity has been one of the greatest challenges facing Libya in recent history and it ranks as the most water-stressed country in North Africa. Now‚ it has to address these problems against the backdrop of corruption‚ conflict‚ and climate change.

Pets Snacked On Your Dead Body? Worry Not‚ Your Cause Of Death Can Still Be Determined

A dead body that’s been gnawed upon by cats and dogs might sound like a particularly grisly cold open to an episode of Bones‚ but pet-scavenged bodies aren’t just the stuff of police procedurals – your pets would probably eat you if you died. Thankfully‚ if that death happens to have occurred under criminal circumstances‚ new research means that using hungry pets to cover it up might not be that smart of a plan.Coming across a dead body that’s been scavenged by pets is surprisingly not all that uncommon. Whilst it’s not exactly resting in peace‚ it makes sense that cats and dogs might give us a little nibble given that they are carnivorous and probably peckish. However‚ it can be a pain for those trying to investigate deaths‚ as scavenging can potentially cover up its more nefarious causes. In a recent study‚ anthropologists from the University of Bern set out to determine trends across known cases of pet scavenging and how this could be used in assessing the cause of death. If you want to look at the paper‚ it’s linked at the bottom of the article‚ but be warned – the images are not for the squeamish. The team collected published reports of cases where scavenging by pets had occurred (there was even a hamster involved in one case – never looking at Penfold in the same way again) and identified seven recent cases in Switzerland where cats and dogs in particular had caused issues for investigators due to their snacking. Picking out the problems allowed the researchers to create a flowchart that could be used by investigators to determine what evidence to collect and how and when to collect it‚ to determine whether or not an animal scavenged a body and if so‚ what animal. The flowchart developed for investigators.Indra et al.‚ Forensic Science‚ Medicine and Pathology 2023 (CC BY 4.0)Alongside taking photos and samples of animal fur and feces‚ the team suggests noting down the size‚ breed‚ and number of animals‚ as well as considering how gnawing or bite marks might have mimicked or obscured forensically relevant wounds. Arming investigators with this methodology could help them focus on areas that often seem to be missed or dismissed as irrelevant.“Our study highlights the need for sophisticated documentation‚ particularly for distinction between human-inflicted injuries and scavenging‚ but also discrimination between cats and dogs‚ and between canines of different sizes‚” the authors conclude. “It also shows that the information typically collected at scenes of indoor scavenging is insufficient to perform a discrimination study.”It's hoped that‚ with the flowchart in hand‚ investigations of death could “overcome these aspects and gather systematic information for future indoor death scenes with questionable scavenging activity.”  So even if you do receive the double whammy of dying under suspicious circumstances and being munched on by your otherwise loving pet‚ you can rest in peace knowing that whoever’s investigating hopefully won’t be hindered by your dog nibbling your nose. The study is published in Forensic Science‚ Medicine and Pathology. Again‚ don't click if you're squeamish.
