Jordan Peterson Reclaims Religious Beliefs That Promote Freedom

Jordan Peterson Reclaims Religious Beliefs That Promote Freedom

The unworthy heirs of the English Common Law tradition in Ontario decided that it was appropriate to revoke Jordan Peterson’s license to practice psychology. His sin was voicing political and cultural criticism that these worthies didn’t like. Apparently‚ freedom of speech is considered so trivial a thing that they did not even deign to back their decision with any type of reasoning‚ dismissive of any notion that a government needed an excuse for preventing people from uttering opinions they don’t like. The intellectual history of the West veered away from the integrative approach of the Renaissance.  While the worthies were preparing their edict‚ Jordan Peterson was sitting down to a long and extraordinary conversation with his professional colleague and friend‚ Professor John Vervaeke. Both of these psychologists have followed the threads of the modern science of psychology‚ from its classic roots in Greek thought through its reinvention in Descartes and then through its various developments to the present day. (READ MORE from Shmuel Klatzkin: Do Not Let Hamas Escape Into Exile) They use that grasp of psychology to address what is properly called the crisis of meaning: the collapse of common meaning that plays out now in every aspect of culture‚ politics‚ and personal lives. Both men are animated by the absolute necessity of what they call in the title of this talk — the Rebirth of the Sacred. Not that the sacred ever died. But that its power in society has eroded. Its role of giving us all a sense of a unifying wholeness‚ powerful precisely because it makes the differences we have complementary and so enriching‚ rather than isolating and impoverishing. And this is essential to freedom — failing that unifying wholeness present in our lives‚ differences inevitably are final. Conclusions become premises; there is no meaningful talk possible‚ as all differences now are a priori and thus incapable of resolution. Both psychologists are actively involved in the exploration of Biblical‚ patristic‚ and medieval Christian literature. They also have a personal religious practice in which those things figure. That these things are combined with a passionate study of modern science‚ the Neoplatonists‚ and ancient Middle Eastern and hermetic traditions is reminiscent of nothing so much as the spirit of the Renaissance. Before the revolution of material science and before the Reformation and Counter Reformation‚ the cutting edge of European Renaissance thought embraced a religious humanism that inspires to this day by its art and philosophy. The intellectual history of the West veered away from the integrative approach of the Renaissance‚ on which humanism and theism informed and complemented each other profoundly. In our age of political and cultural division‚ to have such a vital‚ integrative approach again is like a draft of fresh water to a worn and thirsty desert pilgrim.  The world is falling apart around us. As we tear each other apart in culture wars‚ only the tyrants seem to offer a unifying vision‚ much as in the catastrophic Great Depression. Whether it is the savage and tyrannical reading of classic religion offered by Iran and ISIS or whether it is the vision of a new tsarist empire of Putin‚ or the modern vision of the all-powerful‚ all-intrusive state offered by China‚ tyranny is freshly assertive. It also finds its ardent and violent admirers in the Free World‚ followed by a gaggle of useful idiots who support the violence as much as their minimal courage lets them. What Peterson and Vervaeke are building in this conversation and in their various labors is a re-visioning of the religious forces that came together to make free society possible. Those forces have always been there‚ right beneath its surface‚ to be called upon in crisis to provide the vision that makes effective unity possible. (READ MORE: The Totalitarianism of Cultural Fog) It is more than interesting that the greatest of political figures‚ who mastered the art of inspiring people to make transcendent and self-sacrificial effort towards the worthiest goals‚ appealed to the underlying religious heritage in a way that was extraordinarily welcoming. Neither Lincoln nor Churchill were demonstratively pious. Churchill said he supported the church from without. Of Lincoln‚ a friend said: “[He] was by nature a deeply religious man. But I have no evidence that he ever accepted the formulated creed of any sect or denomination. I know that all churches had his profound respect and support.” But the sense of something that lay behind all the chaos of the tremendous struggle of the Civil War‚ that made the horrendous losses meaningful and purposeful‚ animated the words of Lincoln’s Second Inaugural‚ an immortal testament to the riveting necessity of defending political freedom: Fondly do we hope — fervently do we pray — that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Yet‚ if God wills that it continue until all the wealth piled by the bondsman’s two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword as was said three thousand years ago so still it must be said “the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.” Churchill galvanized his nation and the world by properly casting the fight against Hitler in religious terms: Bearing ourselves humbly before God‚ but conscious that we serve an unfolding purpose‚ we are ready to defend our native land against the invasion by which it is threatened. We are fighting by ourselves alone; but we are not fighting for ourselves alone. Here in this strong City of Refuge which enshrines the title-deeds of human progress and is of deep consequence to Christian civilization; here‚ girt about by the seas and oceans where the Navy reigns; shielded from above by the prowess and devotion of our airmen —we await undismayed the impending assault. That both men were not doctrinaire or narrow in their religion was key to the universality of their appeal and their success in calling a nation and a world to its highest cause and deepest commitment.  This is in the spirit of the Renaissance as well. I marvel at the religious power of Michelangelo. I look to the meeting of the Italian philosopher Pico della Mirandola with the rabbi and kabbalist Yaakov Allemano‚ resulting in Pico’s seeing in those Jewish mystical teachings the presca theologia‚ the ancient true strain running through all religions and enabling them to understand each other fully. I am amazed at Johann Reuchlin‚ who was also attracted to the Kabbala through Pico‚ and who studied together with Rabbi Ovadia Seforno‚ a great biblical commentator. An ordained priest‚ Reuchlin fought for the inclusion of Hebrew studies in the universities and fought for religious freedom‚ intervening with the Holy Roman Emperor to stop a planned confiscation and burning of the Talmud throughout his domain. This mindset of deep piety expressed through a humble and human openness‚ common to these great Renaissance figures‚ inspired the constitutionalist movement towards political freedom. While France and later Russia would engage in trashing the historical biblical heritage of the West‚ England and America found sustenance in the kind of religion that flourished when all were given freedom to worship as their conscience dictated. It certainly flowed through the Common Law tradition which saw even the greatest monarch as subservient to God‚ and which saw in the Jewish Law tradition the model of a law which people carry forward in their hearts and to which‚ in their God-given liberty‚ they are devoted. (READ MORE: James Carville‚ Religion Deserves a Place at the Table) Both Peterson and Verveike see religion at work in science’s devotion to truth and meaning. They include it not only in the intellectual discussion of religion‚ but in religion’s devotional communion. In doing so‚ they are preparing the grounds for the renewal of the cause of free societies in the West and worldwide. Devotion to that which is both deepest and most high rescues religious traditions from narrowness and intolerance‚ and revives a world choking on the dismal dry sand of the rampant nihilism that has shattered our institutions‚ evaporated political trust and cooperation‚ and left a swath of drug death‚ mutilation‚ and incoherence throughout our country‚ It is a call to rebirth and renewal that will be regenerating freedom long after the Ontario bureaucrats lapse into well-deserved oblivion. Understanding Pope Francis’s Comments on Hell

Understanding Pope Francis’s Comments on Hell

The Catholic social media world has been ablaze lately with commentary on remarks Pope Francis made regarding Hell. In a recent interview‚ the Pontiff said‚ “What I would say is not a dogma of faith‚ but my personal thought: I like to think Hell is empty; I hope it is.” Given the current Pope’s apparent obsession with mercy — sometimes‚ it would seem‚ unbounded or untempered by justice — the comment should come as no surprise. What may be a surprise is the vitriol with which terminally-online Catholics responded. Pope Francis is not denying the existence of Hell by any means. Nor is he preaching that all souls will be saved from Hell. All across Twitter‚ Facebook‚ and numerous YouTube channels‚ Catholics of all stripes protested the Pope’s musing as unjust‚ uncharitable‚ and a type of “universalism.” Many offered not the Litany of Saints (a powerful‚ if lengthy‚ prayer for intercession) but a litany of history’s most horrific villains — from Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin to more mundane serial killers — asking if even these could be deserving of Heaven. Although Pope Francis sometimes suffers from that embarrassing illness known as “foot in mouth‚” this was not one of those times. First of all‚ Francis makes clear that he is not expressing a dogma of faith; he is not making a doctrinal declaration; he is not making an ex cathedra proclamation carrying with it the full binding force of the Petrine office; he is simply musing‚ sharing his personal thoughts and hopes with those who call him Holy Father. It is important to remember that‚ although the Catholic Church holds that the Pope is offered the guidance and enlightenment of the Holy Ghost‚ he is still a man — and while God may prevent the Pope from teaching doctrinal error‚ the Pope is still free to accept or reject the wisdom offered from Heaven. (READ MORE from S.A. McCarthy: Archdiocese Challenges Child Abuse Victims Act) Secondly‚ the Pontiff is not preaching the error known as “universalism‚” the belief that either there is no Hell or that God saves everyone from going to Hell. As far as Hell’s existence‚ it is spoken of by Christ Himself throughout the Gospels‚ meaning that He would be a liar (and thus not God‚ the Second Person of the Holy Trinity) if there were no Hell. And as for God’s saving all souls from Hell‚ this would necessitate His imposing on the free will He gifted to man: if man is not free to reject God‚ he is also not free to accept God. Although not a Catholic‚ the Christian author C.S. Lewis in his book The Great Divorce pithily summarized Hell by saying‚ “There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God‚ ‘Thy will be done‚’ and those to whom God says‚ in the end‚ ‘Thy will be done.’” He adds‚ “All that are in Hell‚ choose it. Without that self-choice there could be no Hell. No soul that seriously and constantly desires joy will ever miss it. Those who seek find. Those who knock it is opened.” It is fallacious to think of Hell as a place where souls are punished for not living up to God’s standards. Rather‚ Hell is a place or a state of being that souls choose for themselves: those who repeatedly‚ unrepentantly reject God in life choose not to suddenly embrace Him in the afterlife. Indeed‚ a heart hardened and deadened by sin over the course of a lifetime is not in the habit of turning to God but away from Him. Although Hell is an existence of pain and suffering‚ it is the self-inflicted pain and suffering of an eternity cut off from God‚ the source and summit of all good. It is not just a never-ending timeout for enjoying sin. Pope Francis is not denying the existence of Hell by any means. Nor is he preaching that all souls will be saved from Hell. He is simply hoping that Hell is empty. Whether this means that no one‚ in the end‚ chooses to reject God or whether it means that God offers all the chance to be purified of their sins through Purgatory is not stated. The first of these alternatives seems unlikely‚ though it is not necessarily impossible. The latter is even more possible. The Catholic Church holds that mortal man is bound to the sacraments: we are to avail ourselves of the forgiveness God offers through confession and the intimacy He affords through the Eucharist — but God Himself is not bound by the sacraments: He can‚ being the omnipotent God that He is‚ operate outside of them. Pope Francis seems to be placing his hope in this prospect. (READ MORE: In 2023‚ Nicaragua Was No Place To Be Catholic) Unfortunately‚ the Pontiff’s thinking in this case‚ while by no means expressly erroneous‚ would appear to be just wishful thinking. Countless Saints have had visions of Hell‚ and testify that it is well and fully populated. The most powerful of these Saints‚ the Blessed Virgin Mary‚ even testifies to the fact. While appearing to three shepherd children in Fatima‚ Portugal‚ in 1917‚ Our Lady showed the children a vision of Hell. At the request of her bishop‚ one of those children‚ Lucia dos Santos‚ testified that she and her two younger cousins had been shown “a sea of fire.” She continued: Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form‚ like transparent burning embers‚ all blackened or burnished bronze‚ floating about in the conflagration‚ now raised into the air by the flames that issued from within themselves together with great clouds of smoke now falling back on every side like sparks in huge fires‚ without weight or equilibrium‚ amid shrieks and groans of pain and despair‚ which horrified us and made us tremble with fear. (It must have been this sight which caused me to cry out‚ as people say they heard me). The demons could be distinguished by their terrifying and repellent likeness to frightful and unknown animals‚ black and transparent like burning coals. Terrified and as if to plead for succour‚ we looked up at Our Lady‚ who said to us‚ so kindly and so sadly: You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them‚ God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done‚ many souls will be saved and there will be peace. While Pope Francis’s wish that Hell is empty seems to be contradicted by the Blessed Virgin herself‚ he and we may hope that‚ through much prayer‚ it is never quite so full as its diabolical denizens desire. ‘Free Media’ for Trump Feels Like 2016 Again

WASHINGTON — When The Associated Press called Monday’s Iowa caucus for Donald Trump around 5:30 p.m. Pacific — a half-hour into the voting and before many Iowa Republicans had cast their ballots — it must have felt like a slap in the face for the other candidates in the race. Why would anyone suspect the media are “in the tank for Trump”? Ron DeSantis campaign official Andrew Romeo wrote on X‚ “Absolutely outrageous that the media would participate in election interference by calling the race before tens of thousands of Iowans even had a chance to vote.” Romeo concluded‚ “The media is in the tank for Trump and this is the most egregious example yet.” Media in the tank for Trump? Wow‚ I didn’t see that coming. The National Review‘s Andrew McCarthy responded that Romeo’s “only error is that the media is actually in the tank for Biden.” Democrats were critical of the early call as well. Dan Pfeiffer‚ who was a senior adviser to President Barack Obama‚ tweeted‚ “This such a self-defeating move at a time of massive distrust in the media and electoral system. Just wait an hour until people have voted. You don’t get a Pulitzer for being first to tell people something everyone knows is going to happen.” (READ MORE from Debra Saunders: Bipartisan Circus in House as Hunter Biden Makes Cameo) Why would anyone suspect the media are “in the tank for Trump”? Maybe because Trump’s poll numbers have risen along with the mounting legal cases against him — 91 criminal charges filed in four states. Trump garnered 51 percent of the vote in Iowa. Trump beat all of his opponents put together. DeSantis clung to second place with 21.2 percent‚ and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley claimed 19.1 percent. Democrats must be thinking‚ “How can this be happening?” I can relate. I felt this way during the 2016 election. Despite all his gaffes and all of the women making accusations against him‚ Trump kept succeeding. Not a coincidence: From the moment Trump and his wife‚ Melania‚ rode a Trump Tower escalator on his way to announce that he was running for president‚ Trump was a constant presence on TV news. It was “free media” — as opposed to paid advertising — that helped catapult Trump to the head of the pack. The tracking firm mediaQuant figured that Trump enjoyed $5.6 billion in “free media‚” according to the Columbia Journalism Review‚ “more than Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders and Ted Cruz combined.” During the 2016 primaries‚ I was among those who believed that cable news hosts kept inviting the real estate magnate on their shows because they wanted him to win the Republican nomination. They thought he would lose to the inevitable Democratic nominee‚ Hillary Clinton. It certainly felt that way. (READ MORE: Biden Urged Oppressed to Cross Border. Now There Are Caravans.) But then‚ things didn’t turn out the way most of punditry — I’m guilty here‚ too — predicted. The more prosecutors go after Trump‚ and the more the media breathlessly report on the charges‚ the more Republicans see him as a victim. It’s a sad state of affairs‚ but when you talk to Republicans about politics‚ their biggest beef seems to be not with Biden but with fellow GOP voters whom they deem to be insufficiently pro-Trump. That doesn’t bode well for Republicans in November. Contact Review-Journal Washington columnist Debra J. Saunders at dsaunders@reviewjournal.com. Follow @debrajsaunders on X.
