EXCLUSIVE: Majority of Americans Oppose Using Preferred Pronouns in Schools‚ Report Finds

FIRST ON THE DAILY SIGNAL: A majority of Americans oppose the use of preferred pronouns in schools‚ according to a report released Tuesday by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty. The Becket Fund’s Religious Freedom Index findings revealed a reversal in attitudes toward leftist school pronoun policies requiring that children and school employees address each other by their preferred pronouns.  Fifty-eight percent of Americans believe schools should not be requiring preferred pronoun usage‚ the 2023 index found. That compares to Becket’s 2021 findings‚ in which 54% of Americans said that schools should require preferred pronoun usage. Becket offered those surveyed two hypothetical opinions and asked them to indicate which one comes closest to their own. The first opinion read: “Smith believes that gender identity is a controversial topic. Public schools should not be allowed to implement policies to require students and employees to use a person’s preferred gender pronouns. These policies disrespect students and employees who disagree with the school administration.” The second opinion read: “Jones believes that gender identity is settled science. Public schools should be allowed to implement policies to require students and employees to use a person’s preferred gender pronouns. These policies ensure that all people are treated with dignity and respect.” While 58% of respondents agreed with Smith‚ 43% of respondents said they agreed with Jones. In 2021‚ 46% of respondents said they agreed with Smith‚ and 54% said they agreed with Jones. And according to Becket‚ the driving impetus behind the reversal came from Americans between the ages of 25 and 44‚ many of whom are of age to have children in school. “The shift in attitude on school pronoun mandates is part of the overall groundswell of support for parental rights‚” said Mark Rienzi‚ president and CEO of Becket. “Americans are increasingly opposed to school rules that force one-sided gender ideology onto children in the classroom and seek to cut parents out of the discussion‚” he added. “That’s a welcome development for anyone who takes parental rights and the First Amendment seriously.” Becket released its annual Religious Freedom Index on Tuesday‚ National Religious Freedom Day‚ an index that examines American attitudes on First Amendment rights. The index surveyed 1‚000 participants over the age of 18 between Sept. 28 and Oct. 5‚ 2023‚ with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points. Have an opinion about this article? Antisemitism From the Left

Antisemitism From the Left

Jews are feeling increasingly afraid and unwelcome. Last week‚ girls on the basketball team of a Jewish private school in suburban Hartsdale‚ New York‚ were jabbed and hit with antisemitic slurs by players from Yonkers’ Roosevelt High School. “I support Hamas‚ you f—ing Jew‚” a Roosevelt player snarled. The game had to be called off in the third quarter‚ and the Jewish girls needed school security to help them leave. Antisemitic incidents were already on the rise in 2021 and 2022. Now they are up nearly 400% year over year since the Oct. 7 Hamas attack against Israel‚ according to the Anti-Defamation League. Jonathan Greenblatt‚ CEO of the ADL‚ explains: “I am not talking about‚ you know‚ stores producing IDF T-shirts. I’m talking about a coffee shop on Long Island‚ an ice cream parlor in the Bay Area‚ a restaurant in Chicago.” It reminds Greenblatt of his grandparents’ barbershop‚ which was vandalized by the Nazis in Germany. “I can’t believe this is happening in our country today.” Believe it. The mainstream media choose to downplay it and the Democratic Party is‚ at best‚ divided. Antisemitism has often come from the Right‚ but it appears now to be coming from the Left. When the presidents of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology‚ Harvard University‚ and the University of Pennsylvania caused outrage by saying at a congressional hearing in December that calls for Jewish genocide don’t necessarily violate campus policy—“it depends on the context”—Democrats’ reactions were mixed. Sen. John Fetterman‚ D-Pa.‚ had no problem with moral clarity. “There is no ‘both sides-ism’ and it isn’t ‘free speech‚’ it’s simply hate speech‚” Fetterman said. It should be “reflexive” to “condemn antisemitism.” But former President Barack Obama‚ the titular head of the party‚ had a different response. He reached out to Harvard and made a behind-the-scenes effort to save President Claudine Gay’s job. On Dec. 13‚ the House of Representatives voted on a resolution to condemn antisemitism on campuses and demand the resignations of the presidents of Harvard and MIT for tolerating it. Democrats split‚ with 84 supporting the resolution and 125 opposing. Rep. Jerry Nadler‚ D-N.Y.‚ called it a “gross overreach” to tell colleges whom they should hire. Sorry. If the discrimination had been against black students‚ the vote would have been unanimous‚ and Democrats would have clamored to pull federal funding from the colleges. But Jewish students can pound salt. Jewish hostages‚ too. The public’s indifference to the eight American Jews captive in Gaza‚ the media’s silence‚ and President Joe Biden’s tepid efforts to get them released by Hamas are telling. Recall that during Jimmy Carter’s presidency‚ 52 American diplomats and citizens were taken hostage at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran‚ and endured 444 days of captivity. During that ordeal‚ Americans tied yellow ribbons around trees and Walter Cronkite announced on the nightly CBS news how many days the hostages had been captive. Carter’s failure to get them out contributed to his landslide loss to Ronald Reagan in 1980. That’s unlikely to be a factor this November because this time so few Americans care. Granted‚ there are only eight hostages‚ and they were not serving the U.S. in an official capacity when they were taken. Even so‚ the silence is troubling. In 2014‚ first lady Michelle Obama made it a cause celebre when 200 Nigerian school girls were abducted. They weren’t Americans‚ but she said:‚ “In these girls‚ Barack and I see our own daughters.” Prominent Democrats today are not holding signs saying “Bring Back Our Hostages.” Families of the American hostages released an ongoing TV ad on Jan. 7 to fill the void and build awareness. Over the centuries‚ hatred of Jews has come from many directions. The latest wave appears linked to progressive opposition to Israel’s treatment of Palestinians‚ according to a study done by Arie Perliger‚ director of security studies at the University of Massachusetts‚ Lowell. All Jews must bear the guilt‚ the thinking goes. By failing to condemn antisemitism‚ the politicians and academics‚ and their media allies are doing our enemies’ bidding. One week ago‚ ISIS released a 67-minute diatribe calling for the destruction of Jews worldwide to avenge Israeli strikes against Gaza. The message was “Kill them wherever you find them.” Meanwhile‚ Jewish families privately talk at the dinner table about Anne Frank‚ hiding in attics‚ and where this new wave of antisemitism could lead. It’s time for all Americans to denounce it. The Daily Signal publishes a variety of perspectives. Nothing written here is to be construed as representing the views of The Heritage Foundation. White House Hosted Its First ‘Climate Corps’ Info Session. It Was Exactly What You’d Expect.

The White House hosted its first information session for President Joe Biden’s “American Climate Corps” program on Thursday to tout the program and solicit feedback from prospective participants. Ali Zaidi‚ the White House national climate adviser‚ joined Sen. Ed Markey‚ D-Mass.‚ and other White House officials to preview the American Climate Corps‚ a de facto green jobs training program that is expected to begin churning out cohorts this summer. The government officials marketed the program as a key tool to push sweeping societal action to counter climate change‚ while civilians logged on to the virtual information session made suggestions and asked a range of questions about the program and the shape it will take. The White House announced the establishment of the program in September‚ using executive authority to start it. The corps was a top priority for left-wing lawmakers and environmentalists during negotiations for the massive legislation that ultimately became the Inflation Reduction Act‚ but the program did not make it into the package due to strong Republican opposition surrounding its potential costs‚ according to The Associated Press. Markey‚ who introduced a Green New Deal resolution with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez‚ D-N.Y.‚ in 2019‚ was the first official to deliver extended remarks about the American Climate Corps during the information session. Left-Wing Sen. Ed Markey: ‘The Oil Era Will Be Over If We Pass’ Biden’s Agenda https://t.co/lzqBW8Gp82— Daily Caller (@DailyCaller) November 17‚ 2021 “The president’s American Climate Corps will put 20‚000 Americans to work‚ get them trained‚ get them paid and turn green investments into a green workforce‚ marking a new era of youth-powered climate action all across our country‚” Markey said. “When we hear about these crises hitting our communities— climate change‚ racism‚ public health pandemics‚ economic inequality—it is easy to choose a path of frustration‚” he continued‚ adding that Biden’s American Climate Corps will “[rectify] the racial and gender inequities of the past” and be an “unapologetically pro-union” program. Zaidi‚ one of the key administrative players in the Biden administration’s massive climate agenda‚ also spoke during the information session. “Whether it’s climate change‚ or it’s student debt relief‚ or it’s taking on the gun lobby‚ I think young people have opened our imagination‚ our aperture‚ our desire to drive big structural change at this moment of crisis‚” Zaidi said. “I think‚ in particular‚ the fingerprints of youth organizers‚ and fingerprints of folks like Ed Markey … are all over the design of the Biden administration’s climate policy agenda.” “We’ve got communities in America that were redlined as part of a racist housing policy that are literally hotter today because of that policy‚” Zaidi added. The Biden administration has made a deliberate effort to infuse social justice into its environmental policies. The Environmental Protection Agency massively stepped up its “environmental justice” grantmaking and regulatory enforcement agenda in 2023‚ and the administration’s “Justice 40” mandate instructs federal agencies to ensure that 40% of the overall benefit of environmental policy flows to historically marginalized communities. Zaidi also emphasized that the work of the American Climate Corps will require the White House’s cooperation and partnership with labor unions and philanthropic nonprofit organizations. In order to incentivize participation in the program‚ Zaidi expressed the importance of compensation for corps members as well as potentially providing perks like health care‚ child care‚ educational credits and student loan forgiveness to members. Labor unions‚ including those that typically support Democratic candidates with endorsements and campaign contributions‚ have also played a key role in the Biden administration’s climate agenda. The Biden administration has designed many of its green energy and infrastructure subsidy programs to include labor requirements such that developers can only access government cash if they contract organized labor for government-assisted projects‚ according to Bloomberg News. The program’s moderators also invited questions and suggestions from those who had tuned into the session. “One component I want you to think about as well is in the activation component. We need to make it cool and fun. We should make movies‚ and TV shows‚ and ads‚ and comedy sketches and get celebrities involved to combat the disinformation and fearmongering‚” Cole Thomas‚ a content creator who participated in the information session‚ suggested to the hosts. Other questions related to the permanence of the American Climate Corps‚ especially if former President Donald Trump wins the upcoming presidential election. “I know that if Trump takes office again‚ whether through votes or violence‚ we’ll all have a lot of other problems to deal with‚ but I’m wondering‚ if that happens‚ will the climate corps be on firm enough footing that it will be safe from his whims‚ or will it be more of a situation where one executive order can dissolve it immediately?” asked Benjamin Goldstein‚ a self-described “philosopher” who joined the information session. Because the program was established using executive action‚ it can also be undone by executive action rather than requiring Congress to effectuate a repeal. House Republicans have already made efforts to rein in the program: The House Oversight and Accountability Committee launched an inquiry into the program in October to obtain any internal cost projections that may exist‚ and Rep. Bob Good‚ R-Va.‚ introduced a bill the next month that would prohibit the use of federal funds to finance the American Climate Corps. Markey’s office and the White House did not respond immediately to requests for comment. Originally published by the Daily Caller News Foundation Have an opinion about this article? Davos Elites Complain About Lack of X Censorship

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties‚ subscribe to Reclaim The Net. The current World Economic Forum conference in Davos is already full of hostility towards Elon Musk’s social media network X and its support of free speech as global elites are angered by the lack of censorship. Influential figures from the educational sector of the conference voiced their displeasure about Musk’s platform‚ dubbing it problematic and “toxic.” Luciana Vaccaro‚ head of swissuniversities‚ and Naomi Oreskes‚ a Harvard Professor specializing in the History of Science‚ both voiced their concerns during a panel discussion at the event. A video capturing their condemnation of X and Musk himself has since been circulating on the platform. https://video.reclaimthenet.org/articles/davos-elites-complain-x.mp4 “For a long time I was on Twitter and now it’s become such a toxic place that I’ve concluded it’s not a worthwhile place to spend time‚” Oreskes said. “I have given up on X. What a scary name that even is‚ right?” “It’s [a] very toxic environment and…I have no solution on that‚” Vaccaro responded‚ adding that she believes there will eventually be a “code of conduct” on X. “I think there will be a societal reflection on how information is brought there. Of course on X now there is also the policy of the owner that is problematic but I think this is a problem of the society of the future.” Musk‚ who has battled pushes for censorship from governments‚ the media‚ and corporate advertisers‚ responded to the comments with a simple‚ mocking laugh emoji‚ indicative of his general attitude towards such criticism. Italy: Popular Social Media Accounts To Be Treated As Publishers‚ Face “Misinformation‚” “Hate Speech” Restrictions

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties‚ subscribe to Reclaim The Net. In what can be seen as an open clampdown against the freedoms and rights of social media influencers‚ the Italian Regulatory Authority of Telecommunications (AGCOM) has announced that people with a following exceeding 1‚000‚000 will now be legally considered as “producers of audio-visual content” within the law‚ placing them on the same legal footing as publishers. This drastic change was revealed in the aftermath of an investigation conducted into Chiara Ferragni‚ a notable adversary of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Italy’s most prominent social media influencer‚ regarding alleged fraudulent activities tied to a holiday cake charity event. An investigation ensued after customers were allegedly misled into thinking their purchase of a pandoro cake‚ promoted by Ferragni and made by the Piedmont company Balocco‚ contributed to a Turin hospital’s charity. Investigations for severe fraud are underway against both Ferragni and Alessandra Balocco‚ the company’s chief. Additionally‚ Balocco faced a €420‚000 ($459‚841) penalty from the competition regulator for deceptive practices. Prior to the campaign‚ Balocco donated €50‚000 ($54‚000) to the hospital but did not contribute any more funds. Sales of the cake‚ endorsed by Ferragni‚ reportedly generated £1 million. Despite already being in development prior to the situation‚ the timing of these new laws aimed at treating those with large followings as publishers has raised eyebrows‚ as they mainly target noted influencers of Ferragni’s nature and are now open to regulatory scrutiny. Currently‚ influencers within Europe implementing influencer-marketing strategies are perceived not as media organizations but as sellers or traders. However‚ AGCOM intends to widen this viewpoint‚ likening these influencers to TV‚ marketing agencies‚ and publishers‚ thereby imposing greater responsibility for all kinds of content they produce. This new classification increases the legal and reputational hazards influencers face when publishing material. Under the new regulations‚ influencers are compelled to clearly distinguish sponsored content and ads‚ with penalties reaching up to a quarter-million euros for non-compliance. Violations concerning child protection could warrant penalties exceeding half a million euros. Even non-commercial content produced by influencers must adhere to anti-discrimination regulations and uphold various standards currently imposed on traditional media creators‚ such as abstention from disseminating “misinformation‚” “hate speech‚” or promotion of “harmful” behavior like excessive alcohol consumption. EU-Funded “Disinformation” Analysis Unit Complains That Big Tech Isn’t Doing Enough To Censor

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties‚ subscribe to Reclaim The Net. The EU’s hunger for imposing control‚ whether the target be social media‚ media in general‚ or search engines‚ seems to be truly insatiable‚ but also‚ awkward in finding a way to fully let its “censorship flower” blossom. That’s because the EU is generally speaking little else than a layer upon layer of most times unappealing‚ but often just unpalatable bureaucratic “cake.” Case in point: European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO) is a EU project to back “independent communit[ies] working to combat disinformation.” It’s fact-checkers coming together for supposedly greater social good‚ selfless academics in pursuit of truth‚ etc. – and‚ lecturing the “unwashed masses” on “media literacy.” Now‚ one of the apparent “nodes” in this EDMO “community” is something called the European Fact-Checking Standards Network (EFCSN). Is EFCSN‚ then‚ a bona fide “voice of European fact-checkers who uphold and promote the highest standards of fact-checking and media literacy” – as it claims – or just another way for EU to obfuscate its policies‚ including those bent on narrative control and open censorship? Let the footnote on the EFCSN site speak for itself: it is “supported by the European Union under the 2020 work program on the financing of Pilot Projects and Preparatory Actions in the field of ‘Communications Networks‚ Content and Technology’.” There’s nothing like independence bankrolled by somebody else‚ is there? So let’s see what EU money can buy here. There’s “50 independent fact-checking organizations in over 30 European countries.” EFCSN assets that Big – and smaller – Tech are “not doing enough.” Far‚ in fact – FAR are they from “fulfilling their promises (…) and do not have effective risk mitigation measures against disinformation in place‚ as DSA requires.” The DSA mentioned here is EU’s the Digital Services Act that came into force last September‚ covering “Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs) or Very Large Online Search Engines (VLOSEs)” – i.e.‚ Google‚ Meta‚ TikTok‚ Microsoft‚ X‚ Telegram. DSA requires VLOPs and VLOSEs to enforce “reasonable‚ proportionate and effective risk-mitigation measures.” What does something “defined” so broadly even mean? Apparently‚ most of these companies have not (yet) figured it out‚ either. But “disinformation” is said to be “one of those risks that have actual or foreseeable negative effects on democratic processes‚ civic discourse and electoral processes.” Finally‚ we’re talking business. Elections. In a graphic covering compliance‚ EFCSN shows that what some may call “gun-shy-since-2016” Meta (Facebook and Instagram) are doing “great” – concerning “agreements and fact-checking coverage‚ integration and use of fact checking‚ access to information for fact-checkers.” Google Search also does very well here – but curiously‚ allegedly‚ not YouTube. (Probably just another way to put pressure on arguably the most influential platform of them all.) And then there’s your non-compliant “troublemakers” – X and Telegram. At present‚ and according to the report – they don’t seem to care about EFCSN “standards” at all. Not the least bit. The TSA Plans Big Digital ID Push in 2024

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties‚ subscribe to Reclaim The Net. The US’s leading transportation security organization‚ the Transportation Security Administration (TSA)‚ is taking significant steps towards a more digital future. And‚ of course‚ that means more surveillance and tracking. The plan is that‚ by the end of 2024‚ many of their operational objectives will encompass a digital identity component‚ a move that suggests an enduring commitment towards streamlining traveler experiences with technology‚ even though it undermines privacy. In a four-part action plan released by the TSA‚ the agency plans to extend its mobile driver’s license initiative and more widely utilize facial recognition technology in airports. This includes up-scaling their current pilot program testing digital identities and mobile licenses — used at TSA checkpoints — to at least nine states. It follows a previous announcement in May that disclosed the TSA’s examination of the potential for digital license and ID implementations across 25 domestic airports. Underlining the breadth of the TSA’s digital expansion‚ the agency has disclosed plans to add a fresh platform to the existing quintet used for digital identification. This signifies that travelers will have six options‚ including mobile devices‚ at their disposal for digital identification. However‚ specifics regarding these enhancements were not included in the public brief. Parallel with these digital ID efforts‚ the TSA also commits to amplifying the utilization of facial identification systems under their PreCheck service‚ a program aimed at preemptively assessing threats and facilitating a quicker airport security process for enrolled travelers. The service is somewhat controversial as it allows the agency deeper access into data and information about an individual and their lives – some of which go beyond what travelers believe they have access to. Related: TSA Fast Track Programs Are a Deal With The Devil The aim is to double the number of airports equipped with this technology‚ slated to increase from five in the past year to ten by the end of this year. Similarly‚ the number of airlines engaging with PreCheck is set to grow from two to three. These envisioned goals mirror the directives within a biometrics strategy document released in 2018‚ wherein the officials emphasized broadening the user base of biometric systems and fortifying the necessary infrastructure. Notably‚ the latest plans did not acknowledge the TSA’s previous intentions to collaborate with Customs and Border Protection on biometrics for overseas travelers‚ a goal that was a facet of the 2018 strategy.
