Twenty years ago‚ when I was hiring teachers for the private K-12 school I founded‚ I knew better than to recruit certified teachers. That’s right—I didn’t want to hire certified teachers. Why? Because from my previous work as a college history professor‚ I know that the people least prepared to teach a subject were education majors. Requiring an embarrassingly low minimum of credit hours to be certified to teach a subject—just four courses in some states—education majors encounter in their program the least substance and rigor but the most racist theory and left-wing ideology. If my new school was going to succeed in teaching at the highest levels‚ then I would have to find subject-matter experts with a heart for teaching. That’s what we did—and what thousands of schools across this country do because of the humiliating‚ yet expensive‚ reality of teacher licensure. Put simply‚ it’s a cabal. But don’t take my word for it; the evidence is unequivocal. Traditional public schools have an abysmal education record. Not only are scores as low as ever on the National Assessment of Educational Progress‚ but internationally‚ our math scores remain poor and uncompetitive. Much of the blame lies with teacher education programs and state certification mandates that bolster education schools’ enrollment and subject teachers to radical activist ideology. Colleges of education are besieged by critical race theory and identity politics‚ stereotyping everyone as part of oppressor groups or oppressed groups. They insist on the most fashionable gender ideology. They prefer ethnic studies and historical studies that denigrate America or anything patriotic. States tolerate this situation and welcome teachers trained with such “liberationist” pedagogy into the classroom. While states have been offering alternative routes to teacher certification‚ the vast majority of teachers are educated and certified through university-based colleges of education. This must stop. States should end requirements for prospective teachers to be certified‚ and instead empower schools to hire based on subject-matter expertise. At the same time‚ on the national level‚ we can take the Trump administration’s reform of college accreditation as a model. In higher education‚ accreditation is a de facto federal system of regulating the quality of colleges. It has a poor track record of quality assurance‚ a problem exacerbated by a cartel of so-called regional accreditors that split the country into regions and conspired not to encroach on each other’s territory. There was no competition‚ so accreditors began abusing their power‚ which included requiring leftist ideology in their standards. The Trump administration changed all that. Suddenly‚ any college could choose any accreditor‚ and states began introducing market competition into accreditation. The next administration could follow this model for teacher certification. Like the accreditors‚ teachers unions also have operated like a cartel. Congress should rescind the federal charter of the National Education Association—the only union that enjoys one—no longer giving a federal imprimatur to a special interest group. It’s a teachers union that voted to promote critical race theory nationwide and advocated keeping schools closed during the pandemic. This organization has deeply damaged the United States. In its place‚ Congress could shift that charter to one of the many private‚ parent-focused groups fighting to right the ship in K-12 education. Meanwhile‚ in states that lack the political support to eliminate teacher certification altogether‚ states should recognize or charter private organizations to certify which teachers are ready to teach‚ outside the broken system of college of education certification. Introducing market competition in the validation of teachers will have untold benefits. Some certifiers may focus on patriotism‚ while others may focus on classical education or the ability to train students for the workforce‚ science careers‚ music careers‚ or a variety of life pursuits. Furthermore‚ private entities cannot be taken over or dissolved by future governments‚ as President Joe Biden did with the patriotic 1776 Commission immediately upon taking office. American teachers are almost as vital as parents in educating the next generation. Let’s stop facilitating anti-American activism and instead ensure we recognize those teachers who are best for America. Few academics have fallen as far from grace as Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. Instead of composing lectures from her Ivy League ivory tower‚ she’s been reduced to penning editorials defending the indefensible: Bidenomics. Her latest screed plays a shell game with the facts‚ telling the American people to disbelieve their lying eyes and empty wallets. The truth is much simpler than Yellen portrays: The middle class has gotten shellacked by the very policies she has helped implement.  Even the truths which Yellen writes seem to be in service of lies. For example‚ while she correctly notes that inflation has come down markedly‚ that implicitly acknowledges inflation was previously very high—which she conspicuously omits‚ along with her share of the blame. What caused that inflation? The policies for which Yellen strongly advocated: government overspending‚ overborrowing and overprinting money. That deadly combination spawned the return of 40-year-high inflation‚ which robbed the real value of the American middle class’s incomes and savings. Inflation is still well above its pre-pandemic rate. And prices are so far above their pre-pandemic level that a typical family needs an extra $11‚000 in annual income just to maintain the standard of living they had when President Joe Biden took office. So‚ while it’s true that inflation is no longer at 40-year highs‚ it’s still higher than when Biden and Yellen started‚ and there’s no hope of the cost of living coming down appreciably. Not wanting to dwell too long on such shaky ground‚ Yellen pivots to the unemployment rate‚ which has remained unexpectedly low. But this is due in part to millions of people leaving the workforce‚ which has removed them from the unemployment calculation.  Depending on how one wants to measure the pre-pandemic trends in the labor market‚ the economy is effectively missing between 4.8 million and 6.8 million workers. Accounting for their absence yields a more accurate unemployment rate of between 6.4 and 7.5%‚ a range commonly found in recessions. This phenomenon is like what happened when America entered World War II and millions of young men‚ many of whom were unemployed‚ were put into uniform and removed from the labor force. Almost overnight‚ the unemployment rate went from double-digits to near zero. Perhaps more offensive to the truth is Yellen’s deception about real wage growth. As proof of Bidenomics’ success‚ she cites real wages today being higher than in 2019‚ before the pandemic. There’s just one problem: Biden wasn’t president in 2020 or in 2019.  Since Biden took office and began implementing his agenda‚ real weekly earnings have dropped about 4.5%‚ costing a typical middle-class family the equivalent of thousands of dollars in annual income. Given this sizable loss‚ implicit in Yellen’s comparison is an admission that the only way to make her boss look better is to take credit for his predecessor’s success. Similarly‚ Yellen claims that the administration drained 180 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) in the wake of Ukraine war to stabilize oil markets. What she omits is that Biden had started draining the reserve just three months into office‚ long before the conflict in Europe‚ and continued the drains long after any global oil disruptions were resolved. In reality‚ Biden has drained more than 290 million barrels from the SPR‚ or 46%‚ by using it as a way to reduce gas prices in the hopes of buoying his plummeting approval numbers. Lastly‚ Yellen took gaslighting to a new level when she cited trillions in government deficit spending as the reason for America’s rosy economic situation‚ even claiming the Biden administration’s prodigal ways have reduced prices. The opposite is true. So-called infrastructure spending and the misleadingly named Inflation Reduction Act have imposed new taxes and fees on Americans while wasting taxpayer dollars on unprofitable projects‚ all while those trillions in deficit spending fueled inflation. But did the middle class get a bailout from Yellen as their savings lost value from that inflation? No. Yellen instead bailed out wealthy Democratic donors who had their savings at the mismanaged Silicon Valley Bank. As part of an administration with such a dismal record‚ it’s no wonder Yellen has resorted to deceiving Americans‚ but the people aren’t buying it. The final hurdle to retrieving the full sample of asteroid Bennu collected by OSIRIS-REx – the first asteroid return sample in US history – has at last been overcome. NASA technicians have been able to successfully remove the two fasteners from the sampler head that have been preventing them from opening the canister fully since September. This canister opening has to be conducted under the most pristine conditions to not contaminate the sample‚ so this was quite the issue. Now‚ NASA can get to the pristine material from asteroid Bennu.Since they could just take a circular saw and cut through it‚ once they realized two of the 35 fasteners couldn't be removed with the available and approved tools‚ researchers had to develop new tools that would do the job. “Our engineers and scientists have worked tirelessly behind the scenes for months to not only process the more than 70 grams of material we were able to access previously‚ but also design‚ develop‚ and test new tools that allowed us to move past this hurdle‚” Eileen Stansbery‚ division chief for ARES (Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science) at NASA's Johnson Space Center‚ said in a statement. “The innovation and dedication of this team has been remarkable. We are all excited to see the remaining treasure OSIRIS-REx holds.”             The new tools were made of a specific grade of surgical‚ non-magnetic stainless steel; the hardest metal approved for use in the pristine curation gloveboxes. Before it was used on the precious container it was tested in the rehearsal lab. “In addition to the design challenge of being limited to curation-approved materials to protect the scientific value of the asteroid sample‚ these new tools also needed to function within the tightly-confined space of the glovebox‚ limiting their height‚ weight‚ and potential arc movement‚” said Dr Nicole Lunning‚ OSIRIS-REx curator at Johnson. “The curation team showed impressive resilience and did incredible work to get these stubborn fasteners off the TAGSAM head so we can continue disassembly. The mission's goal has already been surpassed with that sample alone and the bounty waiting for the scientists will deliver so much more. A portion of the sample is already available for the general public to see.      Asteroid Bennu‚ the most dangerous known asteroid‚ is a window into the very beginning of the Solar System. A primitive space rock that has remained mostly unaltered for billions of years‚ studying its physical and chemical properties could give us hints about the building blocks of planets as they were forming 4.5 billion years ago.
