Evolution May Not Be As Random As Previously Thought

The theory of evolution by natural selection is robust and well-evidenced‚ but that doesn’t mean we are not learning new things about how life develops and changes over time. A new study has found that evolution may not be as unpredictable as previously thought. The implications could open the door to novel ways to tackle real-world issues‚ including antibiotic resistance‚ disease‚ and even climate change. The study challenges a long-held belief that evolution is always an unpredictable process. According to its findings‚ the evolutionary trajectory of a genome can be influenced by its evolutionary past‚ instead of being determined by multiple factors and historical accidents. "The implications of this research are nothing short of revolutionary‚" Professor James McInerney‚ from the School of Life Sciences at the University of Nottingham‚ explained in a statement. "By demonstrating that evolution is not as random as we once thought‚ we've opened the door to an array of possibilities in synthetic biology‚ medicine‚ and environmental science."McInerney and colleagues analyzed the pangenome – a collection of all DNA sequences of a given species that contains sequences shared by all individuals – to answer this crucial question: can a genome's evolutionary history determine its future trajectory? The team used a machine learning method‚ known as Random Forest‚ with a dataset of 2‚500 complete genomes from a single bacterial species. They performed several hundred thousand hours of computer processing to investigate this question. With the data loaded into the computer‚ they were able to create “gene families” from each of the genes in each genome. "In this way‚ we could compare like-with-like across the genomes‚" Maria Rosa Domingo-Sananes from Nottingham Trent University‚ added.Once the families had been identified‚ it was possible to examine the pattern of how they were present in some genomes and absent from others. "We found that some gene families never turned up in a genome when a particular other gene family was already there‚ and on other occasions‚ some genes were very much dependent on a different gene family being present."In essence‚ the research revealed an “invisible ecosystem” of genes that cooperate or compete with one another."These interactions between genes make aspects of evolution somewhat predictable and furthermore‚ we now have a tool that allows us to make those predictions‚" added Dr Domingo-Sananes.According to Dr Alan Beavan‚ also from the School of Life Sciences at the University of Nottingham‚ “From this work‚ we can begin to explore which genes 'support' an antibiotic resistance gene‚ for example. Therefore‚ if we are trying to eliminate antibiotic resistance‚ we can target not just the focal gene‚ but we can also target its supporting genes.”This approach can be used to synthesize new genetic constructs “that could be used to develop new drugs or vaccines. Knowing what we now know has opened the door to a whole host of other discoveries‚” Beavan added. The implications are massive and could lead to novel genome design‚ whereby scientists can design synthetic genomes while also developing roadmaps for the predictable manipulation of genetic material. They could also help scientists combat the rise of antibiotic-resistant organisms‚ by helping us understand the dependencies between genes and how to create targeted treatments. Moreover‚ the findings could influence the design of microorganisms engineered to capture carbon or degrade pollution‚ therefore helping us combat climate change. The study is published in PNAS.

The Best Places To Watch The Total Solar Eclipse Across America In 2024

On April 8‚ 2024‚ a total solar eclipse will be visible from Mexico to Canada‚ crossing the US from Texas to Maine. The spectacular event is bound to attract visitors to the path of totality‚ the long thin region that will witness the Sun being completely shadowed by the Moon. The team at the GreatAmericanEclipse website has crunched the numbers of where in the US is most likely to see the biggest assembly of people at this time. The eclipse will start on the West Coast of Mexico where the path of totality will be about 200 kilometers (124 miles) across‚ shrinking to 160 kilometers (100 miles) by the time it gets to Newfoundland. In the US alone‚ there will be 31 million people already living in the path of totality. If you are not among these lottery winners‚ you might consider traveling if the drive is fairly short. The model predicts that between 931‚000 to 3‚725‚000 people are likely to travel into the path of totality by car. Almost one-third of them will be going to Texas‚ which has several major cities very near or within the path of totality. So there are major roads that crisscross the path‚ as well as proximity to the airports in case‚ though this analysis was based on driving.Following Texas‚ the states that are expected to receive the highest influx of driving visitors are Indiana‚ Ohio‚ and New York. These are also the states with the highest fraction of people already living in the path of totality. The state with the smallest number of people‚ but still in the path of totality‚ is Tennessee‚ with 80.All the roads lead to Texas?Image Credit: Michael Zeiler‚ GreatAmericanEclipse.comThe team made sensible guesses about visitors by assuming an upper limit of 2 percent of people living within 322 kilometers (200 miles) would be willing to drive to the eclipse site‚ and then halving the estimate every extra 200 miles‚ across the contiguous United States. Factors that they also considered is that the eclipse is on a Monday‚ making it difficult for many people to take the trip. Clearly‚ astronomical events care little about the needs of capitalism. The estimates are not written in stone and are subject to changes‚ chief among them is the weather forecast. The team has weighted certain areas such as Texas as more likely to be visited than others but things might change between now and then.If you fancy seeing the eclipse‚ you better start planning – and please wear appropriate eyewear for it.

"Zoo Hypothesis Or Nothing": New Unnerving Answer To The Fermi Paradox

A new paper has taken a fresh look at the Fermi Paradox‚ arguing that if we continue to find no evidence of advanced alien life as our technology progresses we will soon be left with two options: The Zoo Hypothesis‚ or nothing. If you haven't heard of the Fermi Paradox‚ it goes something like this: given the vastness of the universe‚ the sheer amount of time it has gone on for‚ and the septillion stars out there‚ how come we can see no signs of alien civilizations‚ and why haven't they got in touch? We have found many exoplanets in the brief time we've been looking. Surely there must be someone else out there who‚ like us‚ desperately wants to find others?Since it was posed in 1950 by Enrico Fermi‚ there have been a range of answers‚ from the benign to the absolutely terrifying. One is that there simply hasn't been enough time yet. Alien civilizations may prioritize‚ as we do‚ searching for techno signatures‚ which we simply haven't been broadcasting for long enough. On the other end of the spectrum‚ it could be that the tendency throughout the universe is for civilizations to destroy themselves before they reach sufficient advancement to make contact. One explanation‚ proposed by John Allen Ball in 1973‚ is the Zoo Hypothesis. In this idea‚ aliens may be aware of us but are hiding themselves from us."Among currently popular ideas about extraterrestrial intelligence‚ the idea that 'they' are trying to talk to us has many adherents‚" Ball wrote in his paper. "This idea seems to me to be unlikely to be correct and the zoo hypothesis is in fact the antithesis of this idea.""I believe that the only way that we can understand the apparent non-interaction between 'them' and us is to hypothesize that they are deliberately avoiding interaction and that they have set aside the area in which we live as a zoo."Just as we set aside areas of land as nature reserves and leave uncontacted tribes uncontacted‚ advanced civilizations may choose to allow us to evolve on our own and watch our progress‚ as we watch animals in a zoo. As civilizations become sufficiently mature – technologically or politically – they would make contact. Like on Earth‚ these previously uncontacted civilizations would "eventually be engulfed and destroyed‚ tamed‚ or perhaps assimilated".This would imply that there was a ruling civilization/collection of civilizations‚ who all agreed to respect the zoos‚ much like the "prime directive" in Star Trek.Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence‚ but since the Fermi Paradox and the Zoo Hypothesis were proposed‚ the lack of evidence of advanced civilizations (e.g. in the form of probes) has only grown more puzzling. For instance‚ we have discovered over 5‚000 exoplanets. If it turns out we find signs of simple alien life on these planets‚ could it imply that simple life is abundant but advanced technological civilizations are rare? Perhaps‚ as suggested in the new paper‚ planets with enough oxygen to allow for combustion are rare. Earth is the only planet we know of that has fire‚ and it was billions of years before it did. Without fire‚ maybe alien life is unable to create advanced technologies and machinery‚ even if they are intelligent. The team suggests other potential bottlenecks‚ such as intelligence relying on developing certain rare characteristics like humans' brain size and dexterous hands‚ as well as language‚ which could be a rare leap‚ given that it has only happened on Earth the once."In the absence of such a late-stage evolutionary filter‚ the Fermi paradox would return‚ arguably leaving the zoo hypothesis as the last remaining plausible explanation‚" the team write in their paper. The zoo hypothesis has been criticized for being untestable. As our methods of detection progress‚ you could always say "perhaps the aliens just have more advanced ways of evading our detection". However‚ this paper argues that even if alien civilizations were actively hiding they would have a harder time doing it‚ particularly hiding their waste heat production‚ as our own detection capabilities increase."Even if they can hide evidence of their technology (space probes‚ communications traffic and so forth)‚ hiding the large number of inhabited planets in the background implied by such a scenario would probably prove challenging‚" they add.The team argues that we need to continue our search for extraterrestrial life outside the Solar System‚ as well as inside and around nearby stars‚ given the constraints finding life would place on how prevalent early life is through the universe. An answer could be closer than we thought."The longer we do not detect any signs of advanced intelligent life around us‚ the less likely the zoo hypothesis becomes as an explanation‚ forcing us to conclude that technological intelligent life is rare in the Universe‚" the team writes. "It is in this sense that we propose that the solution to the Fermi paradox is the zoo hypothesis or nothing. Fortunately‚ by undertaking comprehensive searches for biosignatures and technosignatures‚ both within the Solar System and beyond‚ we may have it in our power to distinguish between these possibilities within the next few decades."The study is published in Nature Astronomy.
