EU prepares for 40,000 more Afghans

12 December 2021

12.51pm

The EU has agreed to take in nearly 40,000 Afghan nationals, according to EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson (S). She says Germany alone is willing to take in as many as 25,000 of them.

According to the European Commission, 15 member states have already evacuated 28,000 people from their home country, Afghanistan. A further 40,000 Afghans are now to be provided with accommodation and supplies.

Germany will take the bulk of the new arrivals, 25,000, with the Netherlands allocated 3,159 and Spain and France 2,500 each. Other countries are accepting smaller numbers, according to the AFP news agency, Aljazeera reports. It is not clear from the reports how many will be given a place in Sweden in this round.

- I think this is an impressive act of solidarity, Johansson said on Thursday.

She also argued that offering more Afghans access to EU welfare in a controlled way will help limit the number of "irregular arrivals".

85,000 Afghans in EU border areas
An estimated 85,000 Afghans have left their home country and made their way to the EU's border areas in the hope of making their way further into the union, Aljazeera reports. In the aftermath of the chaotic US military withdrawal after 20 years of war in the country and the return of the Taliban regime to power, the EU has already taken in 28,000 Afghans.

Samnytt reported on Saturday that the Foreign Ministry had recently evacuated a further 150 people to Sweden, whether or not they are part of the announced 40,000 is not clear. On the other hand, Foreign Minister Ann Linde (S) assured that "the work to help people in Afghanistan with whom Sweden has cooperated will continue unabated".

Yeah...his numbers keep falling because America is finding out just what a crook, incompetent, no morals buffoon this a$$ clown he really is!!!!!!!

"President Joe Biden received heavy criticism from the American public in his handling of the economy, COVID-19 and gun violence, in a new ABC News/Ipsos poll released Sunday.
As the COVID-19 Omicron variant spreads across the country, resulting in renewed mask mandates, travel restrictions and a third vaccine shot, Biden took a significant hit in Americans’ faith in his handling of the pandemic. While a majority of Americans (53%) still approve of Biden’s response, 45% disapprove, marking the most since he took office and a nearly 20 percentage point drop from March, when 72% of Americans approved of his response."
