More than 2,100 people on Iowa’s voter rolls self-declared as non-citizens when registering for drivers licenses, Iowa Secretary of State Paul D. Pate said. He provided the names to US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), which researched each name to determine if it is a mistake or they are in fact non-citizens — who are not allowed to vote — then refused to tell Iowa what it found, Pate wrote in an October 31 letter. He later said USCIS confirmed that at least 250 were, indeed, non-citizens, but wouldn’t tell the state which ones they are. (Others may have become citizens after getting their drivers licenses.) Meanwhile, left-wing groups sued to block him from removing names by claiming he could wind up accidentally removing citizens since the data Pate had wasn’t fully confirmed. People who were flagged would still be able to cast provisional votes. “The Des Moines Field Office [of USCIS] has since informed us that they had completed a review of every name. Now, the office in Washington, D.C. is refusing to let the Des Moines office share those results with us. This information would be critical to Iowa’s election officials in this process,” the letter said. “The work has been done. The most current, verified information is available. Yet Washington, D.C. will not share it with us,” it continued. “If the federal government has information that will ensure only U.S. citizens vote AND ensure naturalized citizens can cast their ballot as normal, that information must be shared.”  Pate said he has asked the federal Department of Justice to intervene, but it refused. That led him to resort to seeking intervention from the state’s senators, Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst, both Republicans. The pair wrote to USCIS Director Ur Jaddou to demand that he provide the data by November 1, but he did not, they said. “Anything short of the information Secretary Pate requested is unacceptable. Iowa has worked in good faith to secure its electoral process and safeguard Americans’ cherished right to vote. Unfortunately, USCIS’ stonewalling has led to more questions than answers,” they said in a statement. The refusal of the federal government to tell a state whether registered voters are citizens or not is a stunning development after the DOJ sued the state of Virginia for removing self-declared noncitizens from its rolls by saying that it could only be done if each case was researched individually, and if it could be ensured that American citizens who were mistakenly listed would not be removed from the rolls. Both of those things apparently occurred in the Iowa case, yet the federal government still made it impossible to remove the names. In Virginia, people who said they were not citizens when applying for drivers licenses, then registered to vote, were sent a letter asking them to clarify whether it was a mix-up or not, and if they did not respond within 14 days, then they were removed from the rolls but would still be able to cast a provisional ballot. The Biden-Harris DOJ sued to block the move, claiming it was burdensome for people to have to respond to a letter.  The lawsuit said that Virginia was free to remove non-citizens from its rolls through “systematic” means, but only outside of a 90-day “quiet period” before an election. Given that there are primary and general elections, that could mean the majority of an election year is off-limits. Two lower courts sided with the DOJ, but the Supreme Court reversed them and allowed Virginia to remove the voters.

Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee, refused to divulge whether she voted in favor of a proposal that aims to crack down on crime in her home state of California just a couple days out from Election Day. During an exchange with reporters in Detroit on Sunday, Harris said she had just filled out her mail-in ballot. When asked how she voted on Proposition 36, Harris ducked the question, saying: “I am not gonna talk about the vote on that because, honestly, it’s the Sunday before the election and I don’t intend to create an endorsement one way or another around it.” .@dsupervilleap — "How did you vote on Prop 36?" A summary posted online says Prop 36 would allow “felony charges for possessing certain drugs and for thefts under $950, if defendant has two prior drug or theft convictions.” Critics have knocked Democrats, including Harris, over Prop 47 while highlighting California’s struggles with retail theft, homelessness, drug use, and violent crime in recent years. However, Semafor reported Harris did not take a stance on Prop 47  a decade ago, noting how there were “some procedural reasons” while she was serving as California’s attorney general. Harris faced blowback on social media due to the VP staying mum on whether she voted for Prop 36. It “reminds me of the gaslighting faced by many who have chosen to vote Unity in 2024,” said Nicole Shanahan, a Bay Area lawyer who served as former independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s vice presidential running mate before they dropped out and rallied behind former President Donald Trump. “REAL science and REAL food, require REAL free speech and REAL debate. TGI Fridays became the latest chain restaurant to declare bankruptcy on Saturday as 2024 is on pace to see the most bankruptcies in decades outside of 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. The casual dining chain announced the bankruptcy in a statement on Saturday. While the business restructures, its restaurants will remain open, the statement said. The company owns 39 restaurants around the United States. The company’s 56 franchisees are independent and not included in the filing. “The next steps announced today are difficult but necessary actions to protect the best interests of our stakeholders, including our domestic and international franchisees and our valued team members around the world,” TGI Fridays Inc. executive chairman Rohit Manocha said in a statement. “The primary driver of our financial challenges resulted from COVID-19 and our capital structure.” Bloomberg reported in October that TGI Fridays was potentially looking at bankruptcy as it navigated financial troubles. TGI Fridays announcement is the latest in a string of bankruptcies among casual dining chains, including some of the most recognizable brands such as the seafood restaurant Red Lobster and the Italian eatery Buca di Beppo. Hooters of America is under financial stress and is meeting with lenders and financial experts about its troubles.  This year is on track to see the most bankruptcies among restaurant chains in decades outside of 2020 as visits to casual dining eateries fall. Traffic to such restaurants declined 4.5% from 2023 to 2024 in the period from the start of the year to early October. Red Lobster declared bankruptcy in May after it made permanent a $20 special for “unlimited endless shrimp,” which ultimately proved a massive money-loser for the company and contributed to its downfall. The company lost $11 million on the deal. In June, Hooters said it was closing “a select” number of locations “under pressure from current market conditions.” The announcement followed a May reveal that Applebees would close dozens of its restaurants this year.

A team of scientists has reconstructed the face of a 400-year-old woman who was once believed by her neighbors to be a vampire. This discovery reveals the human story buried by supernatural beliefs.PIEN, Poland, Oct 30 (Reuters) - Buried with a padlock on her foot and an iron sickle across her neck, "Zosia" was never supposed to be able to come back from the dead.Entombed in an unmarked cemetery in Pien, northern Poland, the young woman was one of the dozens feared by her neighbors to have been a "vampire".Now, using DNA, 3D printing, and modeling clay, a team of scientists has reconstructed Zosia's 400-year-old face, revealing the human story buried by supernatural beliefs."It's really ironic, in a way," said Swedish archaeologist Oscar Nilsson. "These people burying her, they did everything they could to prevent her from coming back from the dead... we have done everything we can to bring her back to life."Zosia, as she was named by locals, was found in 2022 by a team of archaeologists from Torun's Nicolaus Copernicus University.Aged 18-20 when she died, analysis of Zosia's skull suggests she suffered from a health condition which would have caused fainting and severe headaches, as well as possible mental health issues, Nilsson said.The sickle, the padlock, and certain types of wood found at the grave site were all believed at the time to hold magical properties protecting against vampires, according to the Nicolaus Copernicus team.Zosia's was Grave No. 75 at the unmarked cemetery in Pien, outside the northern city of Bydgoszcz. 2 friends were hiking near Cooperstown, NY when they observed 2 small humanoids emerge from a shimmering 'portal' in a boulder. Later, a strange incident occurred that may be related.I received the following account:"Hello, Sir. My name is Dee and I would like to confide in you an experience I had in 1990 when I lived near Cooperstown, New York. It was mid-spring and a girlfriend and I decided to take a walk in the surrounding countryside. While we were taking a rest near a large outcropping of rocks, there was a 'humming' sound coming from one of the nooks. My girlfriend stood and started walking toward the noise. Though it was late afternoon and we were in heavy tree cover, there was enough light to see into the rocks. As she got closer, she said that the sound was coming from inside one of the large boulders. I began to walk toward her and the boulder to listen for myself.We stood there for about 5 minutes when we noticed the boulder seemed to 'shimmer' like water. We quickly stepped back as the shimmer grew and changed to a greenish hue. Then suddenly, two small beings emerged from the shimmering portal. The beings walked towards us as we tried to move away but were paralyzed and unable to talk. These beings were about 3 feet in height and had green-colored clothes that looked like work overalls. The faces and body features were human-like though I'd have to say more like human children but with some adult features. They also had long blonde hair and very dark, large round eyes. Their hands had four distinct fingers and were very rough textured. (This incident occurred much earlier than the film, but these beings remind me of the Hobbits in 'The Lord of the Rings' - sounds nuts, right?)They took each of us by the hand and started pulling us toward the rock. We both quickly regained our ability to move and broke away from their grasp. As we ran down the hill, we could hear them running behind us. A minute or so into the chase, I felt something hit me on the back and realized one of the beings had thrown a stone at me. I stopped and looked back, but they were gone though I could hear voices from a distance that sounded like there were more of these beings and the sounds were getting louder.We continued to run until we reached the car, got in, and sped off. We had driven about a half mile when a piece of tree branch came flying out of the woods and hit the side of the car. I looked up into the woods but neither of us could see any sign of the beings.We were both shaking when we arrived home. We agreed not to tell anyone about the incident though I think she may have mentioned it to a friend (years after we went separate ways) because there was talk about little people in the surrounding woods. I never had another encounter with these beings but I feel that they knew where I lived. One morning, I found a small pile of stones on my patio picnic table with a small four-fingered muddy handprint beside it.I recently moved out of the area, but I still have a feeling they know where I am. Last week, I was leaving for work and walking to my car. When I got into the car, I noticed a reddish-colored four-fingered handprint on the windshield. A Connecticut experiencer recalls their interesting encounter with a UFO and possible alien entity while driving home from work. The incident took place not far from their residence.I received the following account:"Thanks for reading my email. I had an incident occur in February 2013 that has me wondering what is fact or fiction. It was a Monday night I was driving home from work around 9:45 PM. I live in a very rural area south of Falls Village, CT. and I was only 2 miles from my residence. The roads were still slick from the heavy snow we had received, so I was driving very deliberately. All at once, a deer jumped from behind a snow bank and bolted in front of my car. I slammed on the brakes but still skidded into the back of the deer. I didn't see where the deer went, but I was now stuck in the snow bank. I got out of the car and noticed that my driver's side headlight was smashed as well. I tried to push the car out of the snow bank but it was not budging. So I had no choice other than to call for a tow truck.About 15 minutes after I called for help, one of my neighbors was on his way home and stopped to ask if he could help. I told him I had called for a tow truck but I didn't know how long it is before it showed up. He said that he would go home, grab some chains, and return with his 4-wheel drive pickup in order to pull me out. I thanked him and he left.Not long after my neighbor left, I noticed lights coming toward me on the road. The lights were large and very bright, so I figured that it was the tow truck. As the lights slowly proceeded towards me several more lights illuminated above and below the others. The vehicle, or whatever it was, stopped about 50 yards from me and remained there for several minutes. Then all of a sudden I witnessed a brightly lit 'being' floating through the woods across from me. It reminded me of those bright white aliens from the 'Cocoon' movie though I didn't see any facial features. This being quickly floated through the trees and then out onto the road. It started to come towards me but I was petrified. I just could not move. It didn't have arms or legs but there was definitely a head and something on the end that resembled a fishtail. It stopped directly in front of me and hovered no more than 10 feet away. There were no eyes or mouth, but I did feel the warmth coming from it. It was very calming and comforting. Then it suddenly whisked towards the lights. After a few minutes, the bright lights started to fade until it was completely gone.My neighbor's soon returned, as well as the tow truck operator. I asked them both if they had noticed any vehicle with intense bright lights, but they both looked at me like I was crazy. After they pulled me from the snow bank I drove home, quickly took a bath, and headed for bed. I was still feeling a calming sensation and desperately wanted to go to sleep.I was off work the next day so I decided to go and have my headlight fixed. As I approached the area where I had been stuck the night before, I noticed that the area where the lights were was completely barren of snow and the roadway was dry. Did I have an alien close encounter? To be honest with you, I don't believe in UFOs, aliens, or any of that weird stuff. But I am having second thoughts as to what I witnessed. Was it simply a spirit of some kind? I have had dealings with ghosts and spirits since I was young. What is your opinion?" The arms and hands were huge and bigger than a powerful man.I received the following account:"Hi, Phantoms & Monsters. I had a strange incident that happened in August 2006 that continues to bother me because I have no explanation for it.I was living in Elkins, West Virginia at the time with my wife's parents. I used to go into the Dolly Sods Wilderness area a lot to go hiking and to just spend some alone time. I had heard stories about the Dolly Soda and that Bigfoot was in there. I never paid much mind to the stories.One late afternoon I was in the low part of the Dolly Sods at the Red Creek. The area is really beautiful but you can wander off the trail and easily get lost. It started to rain so I was heading back toward my truck. On my way, I noticed something big move out of some thickets about 50 yards to my left. I stopped to get a better look with my binoculars. I waited until I saw more movement then aimed the binoculars in that direction. What I saw actually caused me to gasp. I could see it very clearly. This monstrous creature stood at least 7 feet and had black hair all over. It was walking on two very strong legs that looked human. It had a very large chest. The arms and hands were huge and bigger than a powerful man. I couldn't see the fingers because it was carrying vegetation. The head was huge and covered in thick hair - but the face had an odd-looking form. It was hard to make out since it was moving away from me but the jawline did extend out from the rest of the face.It continued to walk swiftly away from me but in the same direction where the truck was parked. I didn't know what to do and kind of stood frozen for several minutes. I started to quietly walk towards the truck when I heard something crashing through the thicket again. I stopped and knelt down but I didn't see anything. Well, I had enough and wanted to get out of there. I started to run toward the truck and made it there in about 10 minutes. I quickly drove away and went straight home. I never went back to the Dolly Sods - I am very wary of the wilderness.I contacted a couple of wildlife experts who probably thought I was crazy. I'd of never believed it if I hadn't seen it. One of these guys did say that there had been a 'wolfman' reported in the area back in the 1870s and that he had personally talked to a few people who claimed to see Bigfoot. This wasn't a Bigfoot in my mind.Not long after that incident, we moved to Morgantown, WV. I still enjoy hiking but I prefer to stay on the more pedestrian trails.
