I remember.
I was working as an armed guard on a Bank of America contract. I lived by myself in a cabin in the woods, and had no TV as I considered it a waste of space. So I suited up, strapped on my gun, and headed out for work. The guy I was renting from at the time met me at the end of my driveway, and all excited-like, says "Have you heard?" So I said heard what, and he said "they attacked us" so I asked WHO attacked us, and he said "terrorists. They flew a plane into the World Trade Center". So on the drive to work, about 30 or 40 minutes, I listened to the car radio. The radio newscasters never mentioned terrorists. They just talked like it was an unfortunate aeronautical accident. Then the second plane hit, and reports from Shanksville and the Pentagon started coming in, and folks started talking about terrorists and a coordinated attack.
I remember how clear and blue the sky was for days afterwards - no jets, no contrails, since all had been grounded.
I remember the anti-Muslim hysteria, where any old Muslim, or even just a Sikh, was prone to get attacked just for being. Didn't have to do anything else, they just had to exist in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I remember a Muslim woman in a full hijab approaching me at the bank and asking if I was scared of her yet. I said "Nope. Is there a reason I should be scared?" and she said "you never know - I could be hiding an AK under all this!" I laughed at her, and told her that before she could get an AK unwound out of all that cloth, I'd have had time to kill her 7 times. She laughed and went on her way. I knew the customers, and they knew me, so we could get away with talking like that.
Yeah, I remember.
