Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee for president, gave her “closing argument” speech for the 2024 presidential election at the Ellipse by the White House, the location former President Donald Trump spoke at on Jan. 6, 2021, before a mob of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol. Harris repeatedly condemned Trump, attempted to define herself as different from President Joe Biden, and presented herself as a conciliator when her record suggests the opposite. Here are 6 fact checks of statements from her speech. “Armed Mob” Harris began her speech by referencing the Jan. 6 protest at the Capitol. She said of Trump, “He is the person who stood at this very spot nearly four years ago and sent an armed mob to the United States Capitol to overturn the will of the people in a free and fair election, an election that he knew he lost.” She went on to claim that “Americans died as a result of that attack,” and she noted that 140 law enforcement officers were injured. The claim that the Jan. 6 protesters were “armed” has been disputed. Several carried pepper spray or bear spray. Some wielded flagpoles as clubs and attacked law enforcement officers. Prosecutors charged at least three protesters with having firearms “on Capitol grounds,” or stashed nearby, meaning not necessarily inside the Capitol. Harris is correct that people died, but only two people died directly from the Jan. 6 violence. Seven others died indirectly from events of the day, according to The New York Times. A Capitol Police officer fatally shot protester Ashli Babbitt when she was trying to break through a door, and another protester died in a stampede of fellow rioters. Others died of natural causes or suicide, but the stress from the violence and commotion of the day could have contributed to those deaths. Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, initially thought to have died from an attack, actually died of natural causes, although the stress from the day’s events could have prompted his strokes.  ?ARMED MOB? Although Trump briefly mentioned that he would consider restrictions on contraception, he immediately reversed his position and has not returned to it. As for IVF, an acronym for “in vitro fertilization,” Trump has not only not opposed it, but pledged to subsidize it with federal tax dollars. As for Project 2025—a project launched by The Heritage Foundation in partnership with over 100 conservative organizations to empower a conservative president to undermine the deep state and restore the Constitution—Trump has stated that he has not read it and does not support it. The project consists of three major parts: “Mandate for Leadership,” a list of policies Heritage recommends; a database of conservatives who would be interested in joining a conservative administration; and trainings for those in the database. The claim about forcing states to monitor women’s pregnancies comes from a twisting of a policy advocated in the Mandate for Leadership. Even left-leaning outlets like PolitiFact have rightly branded this claim false. The Project 2025 document does not call for the federal government to force states to monitor women’s pregnancies. It does, however, urge the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to require every state to submit abortion data. Her speech largely focused on Trump, abortion, and a few other issues. She did briefly return to costs when she pledged to cut down on price gouging, however. “I will enact the first-ever federal ban on price gouging on groceries,” she pledged. She also pledged to cap the costs of drugs like insulin. By focusing her price remarks on alleged price gouging, Harris suggested that inflation is largely due to greedy companies jacking up prices too high. Yet as Heritage Foundation research fellow EJ Antoni pointed out, there is a far more obvious culprit: government spending. As Antoni noted, “One of the functions of money is that of a measuring tool. If a yardstick were to shrink from 36 inches down to just 30, it would take 120 of these shortened yardsticks to cover the distance of a football field, instead of 100. As the dollar has lost value, it takes more dollars to measure the value of the things we buy.” While Americans feel the pain of inflation, so do businesses. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “businesses have gotten the short end of the stick,” Antoni explained. “The producer price index is used to measure inflation on the products and services businesses buy—sometimes called wholesale inflation—and that index has risen 17.5% since Biden took office. Conversely, the consumer price index, the widely cited metric for inflation faced by American families, is up 17.1% over that same time.” “Businesses have actually been sheltering consumers from some cost increases in an effort to maintain market share and not lose customers,” he wrote. “That also explains why, according to the Biden administration’s Census Bureau, total corporate profits have fallen for the last six quarters after adjusting for inflation.” “If alleged price gouging were really the cause of inflation, did businessmen magically become greedy when Biden took office?” Antoni asked. “Were corporations never greedy in the 40 years leading up to Biden’s inflationary expansion of government? Biden only supported the “border security bill” earlier this year, while he issued multiple executive orders on his first day in office, reversing Trump policies like the Migrant Protection Protocols (commonly known as “Remain in Mexico”) and instituting a system of catch-and-release. Furthermore, not every Democrat in the Senate even voted for the bill Biden supported earlier this year, and critics have warned that the bill would have cemented Biden’s open-border policies into law. He wants to put them in jail. I’ll give them a seat at my table.” “I pledge to be a president for all Americans, and to always put country above party and self,” she added. (Planned Parenthood denied it did so.) Harris, who received funding from Planned Parenthood during her 2016 Senate campaign, directed her office to search Daleiden’s home, seizing his video footage and preparing a legal case against him. Her successor as California attorney general, Xavier Becerra (now secretary of Health and Human Services), filed 15 felony charges against Daleiden and his center in 2017. “I would say this is an abuse of the criminal process,” Peter Breen, special counsel at the Thomas More Society, told PJ Media in 2020. “I could point you to undercover investigations that are being shown on the evening news in Los Angeles. Under the standard they are applying to David, those would be felonies.” In May 2020, Daleiden sued Becerra and Harris, claiming Harris conspired with Planned Parenthood to violate his civil rights by prosecuting him for the undercover investigation. That case remains pending. Harris also targeted the conservative groups Americans for Prosperity and American Freedom Law Center. Her office demanded that those groups turn over their IRS Schedule B tax forms, which include donor information. Both groups refused to hand over the forms, citing concerns for donor anonymity. Harris’ office threatened to suspend their nonprofit registrations and fine their leaders. The Supreme Court ultimately upheld their rights to protect donor anonymity in a 2021 ruling. In the U.S. Senate, Harris served on the Senate Judiciary Committee. She aggressively questioned Trump’s nominees on issues arguably unrelated to their official positions. She pressed nominees over their membership in the Catholic fraternal organization the Knights of Columbus, because it upholds the Catholic Church’s position against abortion. She also joined her colleagues in pressing Allison Rushing, another Trump judicial nominee, about her participation in events with Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative Christian legal organization. As Harris spoke Tuesday night, Biden rallied Latino voters and condemned a remark about Puerto Rico during Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday. As industry leaders scramble to keep up with the growing demand, a glaring question emerges: How will the United States meet the unprecedented energy needs of its tech giants?The energy consumption of emerging technologies is already staggering and shows no signs of slowing down. The recently released Mid-Year Electricity Update from the International Energy Agency predicts global energy demands will grow at a nearly unprecedented rate. The report directly references the advancements in AI as a contributing factor to this expected surge.Until recently, many industry leaders, even in the tech space, advocated for increases in renewable energy to fight climate change. However, many are acknowledging the limitations of current renewable energy sources, particularly wind and solar.In recent years, the demand for energy from Big Tech companies has skyrocketed, necessitating a re-evaluation of energy production in the United States. For example, Microsoft used 23.6 terawatt-hours of electricity in 2023, an astonishing threefold increase from its 2018 energy consumption. Amazon's electricity use reached nearly 57 terawatt-hours in 2022, matching the energy consumption of the entire country of Greece. Even more striking, estimates suggest that the AI industry alone could consume 85 to 134 terawatt-hours of energy annually by 2027 — a figure that might ultimately prove to be conservative.The energy needs of AI and Big TechThe energy demands of large language models like ChatGPT illustrate just how increasingly energy-intensive these technologies can be. Training ChatGPT-3 required 1.3 gigawatt-hours, while the training of ChatGPT-4 spiked to 50 gigawatt-hours — a 40-fold increase. Moreover, this energy expenditure is only the upfront cost. Using these AI tools also requires significant energy. Tasks, like simple text generation, consume multiple times the energy required for a standard Google search. Beyond that, generative AI tools — used to create images and videos — are even more taxing.As these energy requirements continue to escalate, it becomes evident that the existing energy infrastructure in the United States is ill-equipped to support the insatiable needs of Big Tech. A significant push for increased energy production is vital if the country hopes to keep pace with the demands of emerging technologies. Acknowledging energy shortcomingsRecognizing this urgent need for energy, industry leaders are becoming increasingly outspoken. Recent discussions among tech leaders, including OpenAI’s Sam Altman and executives from Anthropic, Nvidia, Microsoft, and Google, have underscored this urgent need for more energy. In September, these leaders met with White House officials to discuss the industry’s future requirements, revealing that individual data centers may soon require a staggering 5 gigawatts of energy to operate effectively.In a recent podcast interview, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook/Meta, warned that tech companies are “going to run into energy constraints.” Similarly, OpenAI’s Altman emphasized the necessity for breakthroughs in energy production during a discussion at the World Economic Forum's Davos conference in January. Altman has at least two investments in nuclear ventures — Oklo, focusing on traditional nuclear fission, and Helion, which aims to harness nuclear fusion.BlackRock CEO Larry Fink provided a sobering perspective when he revealed that one executive indicated to him that data centers may require an astounding 30 gigawatts of energy by 2030. Fink stressed that we cannot rely on the intermittent nature of wind and solar power to power these data companies, highlighting the urgent need for a reliable energy source. Fink told the audience that “the world is going to be short power. And to power these data companies, you cannot have this intermittent power like wind and solar.”Until recently, many industry leaders, even in the tech space, advocated for increases in renewable energy to fight climate change. The desperate search for energy has led Big Tech companies to strike controversial deals with energy suppliers. Earlier this year, Amazon signed a deal with Talen Energy to secure large amounts of power. This agreement was met with public criticism from people worried the deal would result in increased electricity prices for average ratepayers.Perhaps as a response to this deal, Microsoft took a more unconventional approach. In September, Microsoft secured a controversial agreement to reopen the infamous 3-Mile Island plant in Pennsylvania. This decision has drawn scrutiny, given the plant's legacy as one of the most notorious nuclear power incidents in history. The deal will provide Microsoft with 835 megawatts of electricity per year for 20 years, enough to power approximately 700,000 homes.In addition to corporate initiatives, the White House is also considering plans to resurrect more nuclear reactors, including Holtec's Palisades nuclear plant in Michigan.For the past several decades, political momentum has driven a push for wind and solar to replace conventional energy sources in the United States and around the globe. Former President Donald Trump praised Latinos during his rally in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Tuesday evening after receiving criticism over a joke made about Puerto Rico at a previous rally. Allentown is a majority Latino city with nearly a third of the population composed of Puerto Rican people. 'Nobody likes our Latino community and our Puerto Rican community like I do.' The Harris campaign pounced on comments made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at the former president's rally in Madison Square Garden on Sunday. Hinchcliffe referred to Puerto Rico as an island of garbage and made other racially tinged comments at the event. The Trump campaign distanced itself from the comedian after the backlash. The campaign said various Puerto Rican speakers would speak at the Allentown rally. One of those was Zoraida Buxó, Puerto Rico's shadow senator, who endorsed Trump. "With everything that is going on and will happen during the final stretch, it’s easy to get distracted or misled by propaganda, emotional manipulation, and distortion of the truth and the facts," Buxó said. "We need change, and Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are not the option to bring about the kind of change that you need and want and certainly not the strong leadership that the U.S. needs during these times of turmoil. Cuban-American Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida also addressed the rally before Trump gave his speech. "I will protect our workers. I will protect our jobs. I will protect our borders. I will protect our families. And I will protect the birthright of our children to live in the richest and most powerful nation on the face of the earth," said Trump to loud applause. Trump brought Buxó onto the stage next to him, and she reiterated her endorsement. "We need this man back in the White House! We need this man to be commander in chief!" she said. "Nobody likes our Latino community and our Puerto Rican community like I do," Trump added after she stepped away. He went on to say that no other president in U.S. history had done as much as he had done for Puerto Ricans. A handful of protesters demonstrated outside of the rally against Trump. We never celebrated Halloween. My family were so Protestant that they rejected any ritual or tradition that was not explicitly detailed in the Bible. Even though we never dressed up as witches and wizards, we believed in demons. You might say it was a requirement of the "family business." They could hear an axe swing against one pine tree, then another, randomly and drawing nearer. This was punctuated with bursts of maniacal laughter. My paternal grandfather was a traveling evangelical preacher who had seen and cast out demons. He’d jump on the trampoline with us, and then when we were all exhausted, he’d regale us with tales from the Bible or stories from his youth. Family tradition He'd grown up the third of thirteen children. One of his most memorable stories was about his father, a former Pentecostal preacher who also had a talent for ridding people of the demonic. It happened when my grandfather and his brothers were teenagers. The family had met a middle-aged husband and wife who owned a forested island in Florida. Eventually the woman came to my great-grandfather with a problem: Her husband had demons. Could my great-grandfather help? He could. My grandfather watched as his father cast out the man's demons. The axe falls My grandfather and his brothers camped on the island that night to watch over the couple, who were now friends of the family. There were four or five of the brothers gathered around a campfire singing gospel songs they’d learned or written and popping corn. Everything was dark except for the fire at their center and the stars above them. Then chopping sounds interrupted their singing. It sounded like someone was cutting a tree down somewhere — which was odd, considering that they were on an island that nobody lived on except the middle-aged couple, who were certainly sleeping right now and not chopping anything. Nevertheless, they started to sing another song. Sound and fury The sounds became stranger. They could hear an axe swing against one pine tree, then another, randomly and drawing nearer. This was punctuated with bursts of maniacal laughter. Whatever it was at first seemed to be several miles away, and then two, and then only one. Now it was a quarter-mile away. The brothers had stopped singing, and they waited until they were sure that the creature — man or evil spirit — was quite close. The brothers put their heads together and formed a plan to surround it. If it were a trespasser, they’d catch him and tell him he wasn’t allowed to be chopping trees here! They convinced themselves that they were not scared, because God was on their side — and they figured there were more of them and only one of whatever it was. Spiritual combat They spread out and closed in around the laughing man, who continued to chop at the trees, coming nearer to them. When they knew the voice was at their very center, they rushed at it. The creature broke into one last, long laugh. Whoosh! They were all pushed back as something went up out of their midst. Faint laughter rose to the top of the pine trees. It stayed up there for a moment, then fell back to the ground outside their circle. The sound of the axe chopping at the trees resumed, but this time it began traveling away from them until it faded away. They knew then that it was the demon their father had cast out of the man that day. They returned to the campfire. Their popcorn was burnt, and they all felt a little unnerved. In the morning they looked around the forest, but they could find no sign of any tree being cut into. After that, they would see other demons, but that particular devil was never heard from again.
