Edwards soundly defeated incumbent mayor Sharon Weston Broome, capturing 54% of the vote. Edwards led the race right with a wide margin throughout Saturday evening, also getting 54% of the early vote. “I want to thank Mayor Broome, the hardest seat to be in is the incumbent because you have a record,” Edwards said. “So, everybody could look at you and see what isn’t right or what you stumbled upon and all that. She spent almost 36 years in public service, the last 8 being our mayor. Broome tallied 31% in the first round, ahead of Democrat Ted James, who endorsed the mayor after he was eliminated. But the support from her previous opponent was not enough to win a third term in Saturday’s runoff against Edwards. Edwards’ campaign manager Mason Batts attributed the upset to prioritizing grassroots efforts. Edwards didn’t spend a lot of money on TV ads. “I think our ground game made the difference. We knocked on over 25,000 doors,” Batts said. “That’s probably something no Republican candidate in this parish has ever done.” This is the first election Broome has lost in her 32-year political career. An American woman who lives in Germany faces up to 10 years in prison for allegedly fatally stabbing an African migrant who groped her at a train station. “The woman, 20, was standing on an escalator at Kaiserslautern train station, in the southwestern state of Rhineland-Palatinate, when the 64-year-old man grabbed her backside on June 29,” Daily Mail reports. After the migrant grabbed her buttocks, she reportedly pulled out a knife and ended up stabbing him in the heart during the confrontation. “According to the results of the investigations, the stabbing was preceded by the fact that the 64-year-old sexually harassed the 20-year-old by grabbing her buttocks, an exchange of words, and that the 20-year-old opened a folding knife she was carrying with her, so that she made stabbing movements in the direction of the 64-year-old,” the prosecutor’s office said, according to NBC News. When he finally backed away, the woman followed. The Eritrean man grabbed her arm holding the knife and as the woman tried to free herself, she stabbed him in the heart ‘during the same movement’, according to prosecutors. He died within seconds. The woman has been charged with causing bodily harm resulting in death and could be sentenced to up to ten years in prison at youth court. She claimed that she did not intentionally aim for the man’s heart and argued that she acted in self defence to keep him at a distance. ‘The public prosecutor’s office does not believe that the stabbing was justified by self-defence,’ a spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office told German tabloid Bild.
