Jake E. Lee recalls fan backlash after replacing Randy Rhoads

After being fired from Black Sabbath, Sharon Osbourne helped Ozzy to start his solo career and recruiting the former Quiet Riot guitarist Randy Rhoads to be part of his band was crucial for his success. The legendary guitarist was a fundamental part of the first albums "Blizzard of Ozz" (1980) and "Diary of a Madman" (1981) but tragically passed away at the age of 25 in an airplane crash in 1982. He was first replaced by Bernie Tormé and Brad Gillis as touring guitarists. But the first album Ozzy recorded with a new guitar player was "Bark At The Moon" when he chose Jake E. Lee to be part of the band. The comparison with Rhoads was inevitable and Lee recalled in an interview with Tone Talk (Transcribed by Ultimate Guitar) that he suffered with angry fans for a while when he became a member of the band. Jake E. Lee recalls fan backlash after replacing Randy Rhoads "There was always people in the front rows with 'Randy rules, you suck. "Every gig, there'd be somebody with a sign like that. I think maybe the 'Ultimate Sin' tour. I didn't really see that as much. But the 'Bark at the Moon' tour, there was still a lot of that." "And in the beginning, I didn't know that you're supposed to check into a hotel under an assumed name. So, I just checked in with my real name. I used to get phone calls at the hotel: 'I'm better than you. You suck. Listen to me over the phone.' So that's when I said, 'Oh, that's why you use it.'" "One guy was playing 'Sails of Charon' by Uli [Jon Roth], right? He was playing that. I'm like, 'Yeah, that's Uli! Uli, if you want the gig, you can have it, because you are awesome!' But it's some guy playing another guitar player's shit, trying to tell me how much better he was than me. So, I didn't feel like I was [that accepted yet]," Jake E. Lee said. Foghat releases new song as a tribute to their original singer

The British band Foghat wrote and recorded a new song called "On Tonsils and Sneakers", which is a tribute to their late original lead singer and guitarist "Lonesome" Dave Peverett. The single is titled after his frequent stage introduction, since he used to say: "on tonsils and sneakers, I'm 'Lonesome' Dave". The new single's b-side has the track "Blue Days and Blue Nights' from their recent album Sonic Mojo, which pays tribute to their original slide guitarist Rod Price. Peverett passed away in 2000 at the age of 56 and Price in 2005 at the age of 57. These days, the band's only original member is the drummer Roger Earl. Hear the new Foghat song "On Tonsils and Sneakers" [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5myvwzmsJ8A[/embed] The new track was written by the band's current line-up, which besides Roger Earl also has Bryan Bassett (Guitar), Rodney O'Quinn (Bass) and Scott Holt (Vocals and guitar). Roger Earl talked about the new song, saying: "When Lonesome Dave sang and played with this band, he gave nothing less than 100%. I loved playing with Dave. All I had to do was have fun playing drums. Yeah… Lonesome Dave on Tonsils and Sneakers!" "Every once in a while, you meet someone who changes the whole trajectory of your life. Lonesome Dave Peverett was that person for me. From the day we met in the late '80s, our friendship blossomed, I became his touring partner, I met my future wife and became a part of the Foghat family. This song 'On Tonsils & Sneakers' is our tribute to him and was his unique way of introducing himself from the stage. Oh… and he loved designing his stage tennis shoes!" Formed in London, England in 1971, Foghat first achieved fame in the 70s with songs like “Slow Ride”, “Fool For The City” and “I Just Want to Make Love to You”. More than five decades later the band continues active with the original drummer Roger Earl as their leader. The post Foghat releases new song as a tribute to their original singer appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.

The Bob Dylan song Jerry Garcia called one of the best of all time

The Bob Dylan song Jerry Garcia called one of the best of all time

The legendary American multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter Bob Dylan is one of the most prolific artists of all time. He wrote more than 600 songs during the past six decades. He was admired by many other famous and influential artists, one of them being the Grateful Dead co-founder, guitarist and singer Jerry Garcia. Dylan even toured with Grateful Dead back in the late 80s, which gave birth to the live album "Dylan and The Dead". Dylan and Garcia were good friends and once revealed which was one of his songs, that Garcia said was one of the best of all time. The Bob Dylan song Jerry Garcia called one of the best of all time In an interview with Paul Zollo back in 1991, Dylan was talking about a few songs from his career. At a given moment, they talked about the track "Joey", which was released on Dylan's 1976 album "Desire". According to the Folk Rock composer, Garcia once told him it was one of the greatest songs of all time. To me, that's a great song. Yeah, it never loses its  appeal, that's a tremendous song. And you'd only know that singing it night after night. You know who got me singing that song? (Jerry) Garcia. Yeah. He got me singing that song again. He said that's one of the best songs ever written." "Coming from him , it was hard to know which way to take that. (Laughs) He got me singing that song again with them (The Grateful Dead). It was amazing how it would, right from the gat go, it had a life of its own, it just ran out of the gate and it just kept on getting better and better and better and better and it keeps on getting better." He continued: [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xew67ZHWwLA&pp=ygUOam9leSBib2IgZHlsYW4%3D[/embed] "It's in its infant stages, as a performance thing. Of course, it's a long song. But, to me, not to blow my own horn, but to me the song is like a Homer ballad. Much more so than 'A Hard Rain,' which is a long song, too. But, to me, 'Joey' has a Homeric quality to it that you don't hear everyday. Especially in popular music," Bob Dylan said. "Desire" is one of the most famous albums released by Bob Dylan. Although it doesn't feature many of his biggest hits, it also has famous tracks like "Hurricane" (Inspired by Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter), "Isis", "Mozambique" and "One More Cup of Coffee" and "Romance in Durango". Curiously not all the tracks were not written by Dylan on his own. In most of the songs he had the help of the songwriter Jacques Levy. He had many special guests on that album like Eric Clapton, Emmylou Harris and Scarlet Rivera. Specifically in the track "Joey", there are two special musicians: Dominic Cortese, playing the accordion and mandolin, and Vinnie Bell, playing the bouzouki. Garcia showed Dylan his songs could have been recorded better As Dylan told Edna Gunderson, in an interview back in 1997, Jerry showed him that his songs could have been recorded better. He admitted that he didn't make many "great-sounding records" and believes that many of the old songs were "blueprints" for what he would later on perform live. "Jerry Garcia proved that to me. He took a lot of the songs and actually recorded them and sang them a step further than they were on my records, he heard where they should go. I would hear his versions of songs of mine and I’d say, ‘OK, I understand how it should go.’ Then I would play that and might even take it a step further. There have been other artists who have recorded my songs and shown me the way the song should go,” Bob Dylan said. The post The Bob Dylan song Jerry Garcia called one of the best of all time appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.
