‘No Longer Trusts Anyone’: Iranian Officials Reportedly Gripped by Paranoia After Hezbollah Leader’s Assassination

DAILY CALLER NEWS FOUNDATION—Israel’s assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah last week has reportedly stirred paranoia among top Iranian officials and the country’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, according to Reuters. Israel targeted Nasrallah in a significant airstrike against his bunker on Friday, marking the latest blow to an increasingly weakening Hezbollah, which has been attacking Israel since last year. Khamenei had reportedly warned Nasrallah that Israel was going to try to kill him and urged him to flee Lebanon in the days prior to his assassination, a senior Iranian official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity. Iran had already been concerned for years that Mossad, an Israeli intelligence agency, had infiltrated Tehran’s ranks, the outlet reported. Following Nasrallah’s death, that concern has grown larger—and Iranian officials have become worried about Khamenei’s safety, officials and sources close to the matter told Reuters. “The trust that held everything together has disappeared,” an Iranian official told Reuters. “[Khamenei] no longer trusts anyone,” another source close to the Iranian regime told Reuters. Authorities have opened investigations to see whether some Iranian officials or members of Iran’s military are compromised, another Iranian official told Reuters. The investigations are particularly centered around officials who travel or have family outside the country. Authorities are reportedly suspicious of Iranian military members who have recently been in Lebanon, one of the officials told Reuters. One of the military members had recently been asking about Nasrallah’s location, raising eyebrows among other officials. That individual was arrested, along with several others, the official told Reuters. Khamenei’s warning to Nasrallah—which was made through an Iranian military messenger who was with Nasrallah at the time of his death—followed a sweeping, targeted attack by Israel against Hezbollah, the official told Reuters. Thousands of Hezbollah operatives’ pagers and walkie-talkies randomly exploded in late September, which was likely an orchestrated remote detonation by Israel, although the country hasn’t claimed responsibility. But Nasrallah—who often operated in bunkers underground in Lebanon—felt at the time that he was safe and trusted his security officials to protect him, even as Iranian officials relayed their concerns about his well-being, the official told Reuters. Khamenei made a second offer via his military messenger for Nasrallah to relocate to Iran, but Nasrallah expressed that he wanted to stay in Lebanon. Following Nasrallah’s assassination and the devastating blows Hezbollah has recently suffered, the security situation with the terrorist group is now so fraught that it can’t even hold a public funeral for Nasrallah, according to four sources familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters. “No one can authorize a funeral in these circumstances,” one Hezbollah source bemoaned to Reuters. Israel is expected to retaliate against Iran following a sweeping missile attack launched by Tehran on Tuesday, which largely failed due to interceptions from Israeli and U.S. forces. Though the timing and nature of a retaliatory strike isn’t clear, Israel has promised that there will be “consequences” for Iran. “Iran made a big mistake—and it will pay for it,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said during a security cabinet meeting on Tuesday. Biden’s $2 trillion deficit proves the ‘strong economy’ is a lie

Agenda-driven economists and Democratic Party mouthpieces keep repeating one claim: The economy is strong. But financial strength can often be deceiving. We’ve all seen that family with the big, beautiful home, fancy cars, designer clothes, and a country club membership. At first glance, they seem to be doing well, right? But if they’ve bought all of that with large amounts of debt, they aren’t financially secure. They are simply creating an illusion of wealth, and eventually, that catches up with them. You can’t say the economy is strong, when the fiscal foundation underneath it is full of cracks, smoke, and mirrors. That’s exactly what the U.S. government has been doing — creating the illusion of economic growth by financing it with increasing amounts of debt. From the outside, it appears as if the economy is thriving, which is why certain economists and propagandists continue to push the narrative that it’s rock-solid. However, a quick glance at the numbers tells a different story. The national debt, now nearly $35.5 trillion, is estimated to exceed 120% of GDP. Major financial entities suggest that for stability, it should be around half that amount.Under Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, credit rating agencies, which are often slow to reveal the severity of fiscal crises, have downgraded the national debt rating multiple times. We are now paying more than $1 trillion per year in interest expenses, meaning the cost of financing what we’ve already “bought” exceeds what we spend on national defense. This recalls Niall Ferguson’s maxim: “Any great power that spends more on debt service than on defense will not stay great for very long.”Adding to this growing debt burden is a massive deficit. While we have historically run large deficits relative to GDP during times of war or emergency (or so-called emergencies like COVID), the Biden-Harris administration is running wartime-level deficits — around 7%-8% of GDP, which is double the historical average — during a period without a direct war and with a supposedly strong economy. The more than $2 trillion deficit becomes even more alarming when you consider that the government took in over $5 trillion in revenue in the latest fiscal year. This is not only a record amount (compared to $3.46 trillion just five years ago), but it also exceeds the GDP of every country on Earth except the United States and China. What the government is doing mirrors the extravagant family mentioned earlier — creating the illusion of a strong economy by taking on massive debt. The deficits are inflating the appearance of growth at an enormous cost. The government has also received a boost from struggling consumers, who are taking on record levels of personal debt and dipping into their savings. You can’t say the economy is strong, when the fiscal foundation underneath it is full of cracks, smoke, and mirrors. The economists then want to change the subject, looking at increasing housing prices and stock portfolios. This isn’t the strong argument that’s being presented. Asset inflation started before the rise in the cost of living. While this benefits those who hold assets, it does nothing for wage earners struggling to cover basic living expenses. All it has done is widen the gap between the “haves” and the “have-nots,” and history shows that such a divide is unhealthy. The economy isn’t working well for everyone. Where it does appear to be working, it’s happening at a massive and unsustainable cost. What happens when the Joneses can no longer keep up with themselves? It could very well collapse the global economy. We need to confront reality instead of buying in to the illusion.

Armed man allegedly tried to rob Army veteran, who tossed him over his back and growled, 'Now you empty your pockets!'

An armed robber got a surprise when he tried to target an Army veteran and ended up getting slammed into the pavement, according to Georgia police. Gwinnett County Police officers said they responded to the incident early Friday morning at a gas station on Buford Drive.'I leaned back and I grabbed him by his head and slammed him on the ground.' Rusty Fields told WSB-TV that the altercation began when he pulled into the gas station over a flat tire and a man approached him asking for help and saying he was stranded. "Look, I got problems of my own," Fields said he told the man. That's when he said he felt a gun in his back, and the man forced him to get on his knees. “I could still feel that pushed into my back so he took my keys out of my pocket,” he added. Unfortunately for Fields, he had a bank envelope in his pocket with $12,000 in it. When the man found the envelope, Fields says that his army training kicked in. “The one I didn’t want him to get was that bank envelope in my other pocket,” he continued. “I leaned back and I grabbed him by his head and slammed him on the ground." Fields said he then told the man, "Now you empty your pockets!" Before he could get his envelope back, the man ran off onto Interstate 985. Fields said he called police, and Gwinnett County police officers from the North Precinct responded from nearby. They said they were able to pick up 28-year-old Johnny Roque, who allegedly had Fields' money in his possession. He was arrested for armed robbery. He said he was so appreciative of the officers' response that he took down the names of the eleven who helped him. “I couldn’t believe how coordinated they were,” Fields said. “They were there in a flash and had him within 30 minutes.”The interview with Fields can be viewed on WSB-TV's report on YouTube. ‘I’m a knucklehead at times’: Tim Walz lied about attending deadly Tiananmen Square protests

Tim Walz may have lied about going to war — but after JD Vance’s performance at the vice presidential debate, he finally has a true combat story to tell. “Tim Walz was fidgeting and a little confused about things; he was extremely nervous right up front. Did kind of hit his stride, I would say, a bit after that,” Dave Rubin of “The Rubin Report” comments. While Rubin notes that “the moderators were not horrific” and the debate wasn’t as bad as “the last three-on-one that we saw,” it “was clear that they’re just Democrat activists.” But that didn’t stop moderator Margaret Brennan from calling out Walz’s absurd lie about attending the famous Tiananmen Square protest in Hong Kong, China. “You said you were in Hong Kong during the deadly Tiananmen Square protest in the spring of 1989, but Minnesota Public Radio and other media outlets are reporting that you actually didn’t travel to Asia until August of that year. Can you explain that discrepancy?” Brennan asked Walz. Walz’s answer did not help his case. “I grew up in small rural Nebraska,” he began, before explaining that he was passionate about teaching and got “the opportunity in the summer of ‘89 to travel to China.” “I’ve not been perfect, and I’m a knucklehead at times, but it’s always been about that,” Walz continued. “I will talk a lot, I will get caught up in the rhetoric, but being there, the impact it made, the difference in my life. I learned a lot about China.” “Governor, just to follow up on that, the question was ‘Can you explain the discrepancy?’” Brennan asked again, interrupting Walz’s rant. “All's I said on that was, is, I got there that summer and misspoke on this, so, I will just, that’s what I’ve said. So I was in Hong Kong and China during the democracy protest, went in, and from that I learned a lot of what needed to be in governance,” Walz answered. Rubin can’t believe it. “It’s like why do these people lie about everything? Why do they lie about things that are so easily debunked?” he asks. Why slaveholders restricted free speech

Why slaveholders restricted free speech

In the years before the Civil War, slaveholders were the greatest threat to free speech in the United States. White Southerners used state laws, a congressional gag rule, suppression of the mail, and physical violence to silence abolitionist speech because they believed it was dangerous. In 1830, for example, Louisiana penalized anyone using “language in any public discourse, from the bar, the bench, the stage, the pulpit, or in any place whatsoever,” as well as “in private discourses or conversations,” that had “a tendency to produce discontent among the free colored population of this State, or to incite insubordination among the slaves therein.” In other words, those who spoke out against slavery or racial discrimination would be in violation of this law. The mandated punishment ranged from three to 21 years of hard labor to death. If Democrats refused to permit antislavery Americans to voice their opinions, there would be nowhere to turn but to violence.Other states enacted identical statutes. As one South Carolina newspaper declared, the topic of slavery “shall not be open to discussion.”Speaking out against slavery in the United States took courage. If anti-speech laws were not enough, mobs filled in the gaps. Some abolitionists were brutally beaten while others were murdered.Abraham Lincoln engaged this issue in a speech he delivered at the Cooper Union in New York City in February 1860. Speaking directly to white Southerners, he said, “You consider yourselves a reasonable and a just people. Still, when you speak of us Republicans, you do so only to denounce us a reptiles, or, at the best, as no better than outlaws.” Lincoln pointed out that Southern Democrats were more likely to “grant a hearing to pirates or murderers” than to Republicans.Indeed, when white Southerners gathered, Lincoln said that “an unconditional condemnation” of Republicans was “the first thing to be attended to.” In fact, it was “an indispensable prerequisite — license, so to speak — among you to be admitted or permitted to speak at all.”Lincoln then asked, “Now, can you, or not, be prevailed upon to pause and to consider whether this is quite just to us, or even to yourselves?”In asking this question, Lincoln was encouraging his Democratic opponents to reflect on the consequences of restricting free speech. Only through the free exchange of opinions could the best ideas gain sway. As Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. would argue many decades later, “The ultimate good desired is better reached by free trade in ideas.” He continued: “The best test of truth is the power of the thought to get itself accepted in the competition of the market.”When slaveholding Democrats and their Northern allies tried to silence words and ideas they disagreed with simply because they believed them false or dangerous, they were denying both their political opponents and themselves the opportunity to reach new and better conclusions.Slaveholders believed that open debate about slavery caused servile insurrections. If they could silence the Republican Party, they reasoned, they could eliminate the danger. But Lincoln disagreed. “There is a judgment and a feeling against slavery in this nation, which cast at least a million and a half of votes,” he said. “You cannot destroy that judgment and feeling — that sentiment — by breaking up the political organization which rallies around it.” But if they could, he asked, “How much would you gain by forcing the sentiment which created it out of the peaceful channel of the ballot-box, into some other channel? What would that other channel probably be? Would the number of John Browns be lessened or enlarged by the operation?”This was a stark warning to white Southerners. They might believe that they would win the day by silencing their political opponents. But stifling speech would not eliminate the widespread belief that slavery was evil. And if Democrats refused to permit antislavery Americans to voice their opinions, there would be nowhere to turn but to violence. In his stirring peroration, Lincoln spoke directly to Republicans, urging them to hold firm in their convictions even if they were maligned or worse. “Neither let us be slandered from our duty by false accusations against us, nor frightened from it by menaces of destruction to the Government nor of dungeons to ourselves,” he said. “Let us have faith that right makes might, and in that faith, let us, to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand it.”In this closing line, Lincoln inverted the typical aphorism “might makes right.” He wanted his fellow Republicans to believe that their ideas were persuasive, and that they could carry a presidential election if they would only stand up and make the case for their positions. Well-reasoned arguments, in short, could create political majorities that would pursue justice.Abraham Lincoln offers lessons that are as true today as they were in 1860. If democracy in the United States is to flourish, we must foster habits of mind among our citizens that promote the free exchange of ideas.Editor’s note: This article was originally published by RealClearHistory and made available via RealClearWire.

Philadelphia man shot boyfriend in the neck and lit his body on fire then searched 'having sex with dead bodies' online

A Philadelphia man has been convicted of shooting his boyfriend to death and then setting his body on fire in order to keep people from finding out about their gay relationship. Prosecutors said that 23-year-old Kylen Pratt searched online for the phrase "having sex with dead bodies" after looking for news coverage about the victim's body being found by police. 'It is absolutely one the most abhorrent crimes I have ever prosecuted. It is difficult to talk about.' Pratt was convicted of first-degree murder after 20-year-old Naasire Johnson was found dead in 2022. Prosecutors said Johnson was in a relationship with Pratt and that he had gone to his home on Feb. 17, where he was shot in the neck with a 9mm gun. Pratt then transported Johnson's body to a remote area of a park, where he wrapped it in cloth, plastic, and duct tape before lighting it on fire. Police went to Pratt's home based on an anonymous tip and found a large bleach stain, various blood stains, and a weapon consistent with the bullet that killed the victim. Cell phone data placed the victim at Pratt's home and also Pratt at the park. It also indicated that he searched for "murdering in cold blood," "having sex with dead bodies," and "traits of a psychopath." "This is an individual who was killed because he was gay and because the man who killed him didn’t want anyone to find out that he was in a relationship with him or he had sex with other men," said Assistant District Attorney Cydney Pope. "Plain and simple." Pratt was sentenced to life in prison and to pay restitution to the victim's family of $18,000. Johnson had recently graduated from high school and was going to attend community college when he was murdered. "It is absolutely one the most abhorrent crimes I have ever prosecuted. It is difficult to talk about," Pope added. A video news report about the incident can be viewed on YouTube. Like Blaze News?
