Teamsters Makes Historic Announcement Regarding Presidential Endorsement

Teamsters, an influential labor union which represents approximately 1.3 million workers in the United States and Canada, has decided not to endorse a candidate in the 2024 presidential election. According to Fox Business, Teamsters has “endorsed the Democratic candidate for president ever since 1992.” The powerful union has not endorsed a Republican since 1988. Teamsters’ decision follows internal data showing overwhelming support for Donald Trump after Biden dropped out of the race. “For the past year, the Teamsters Union has pledged to conduct the most inclusive, democratic, and transparent Presidential endorsement process in the history of our 121-year-old organization—and today we are delivering on that promise to our members,” said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien. “Our members are the union, and their voices and opinions must be at the forefront of everything the Teamsters do. Our final decision around a possible Presidential endorsement will not be made lightly, but you can be sure it will be driven directly by our diverse membership,” O’Brien added. The union’s polling prior to Biden dropping out showed Biden was ahead of Trump among members, 44.3% to 36.3%,” Fox Business noted. The latest polling has Trump leading Harris 59 percent to 34 percent among Teamsters. Fox Business reports: The Teamsters also becomes the only union among the nation’s top 10 not to back Harris as she faces off against Trump in the race to succeed Biden. The Trump campaign was quick to spotlight the vote by the Teamster rank-and-file members. “Union Workers Support President Donald Trump” was the headline of a release from the former president’s campaign. And Trump campaign national press secretary Karoline Leavitt argued in a statement that “the hardworking members of the Teamsters have been loud and clear — they want President Trump back in the White House! These hardworking men and women are the backbone of America and President Trump will strongly stand up for them when he’s back in the White House.” “Wow wow wow wow wow! This means Trump is supported by union WORKERS. Teamster officials are CORRUPT, they can’t endorse anti fracking and pipeline destroying Comrade Harris. Members would revolt. So they won’t endorse anyone. This is DE FACTO a Trump endorsement,” Mike Cernovich wrote. Wow wow wow wow wow! This means Trump is supported by union WORKERS. But it is a stark shift from an earlier straw poll that showed Biden ahead of Trump among Teamsters, 46 percent to 37 percent with then-candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. at 5 percent. Harris’ vastly worse performance among membership also raises questions about whether other blue-collar unions harbor similar reservations about her within their ranks, despite their organizations’ endorsement of her. O’Brien has faced push back from some Democrats and others in organized labor over how the Teamsters has handled the endorsement process, including inviting Trump as well as other GOP and independent candidates to roundtables held at the union’s headquarters in D.C. He has repeatedly defended his approach by saying it is important to incorporate the rank-and-file, rather than imposing a decision from the top. WATCH:
