Domestic. From autumn 2028, compulsory school will be ten years old and the preschool class will become year one, the government announces. The background is that the number of illiterate people is soaring and is expected to exceed 800,000 people this winter.
According to the latest survey by Statistics Sweden, around 780,000 people between the ages of 16 and 65 were illiterate in Sweden, but the number is increasing rapidly.
When the new figures are released this winter, analysts expect the figure to rise above 800,000 and by the end of the decade, more than a million of Sweden's inhabitants could be illiterate.
‘If this trend continues, we risk having a whole generation of young people who will in practice be functionally illiterate,’ said Education Minister Johan Pehrson (L) and Schools Minister Lotta Edholm (L) in a debate article this week.
However, the ministers do not mention that the main cause of the rampant illiteracy is the ongoing mass immigration of illiterate adults from the third world, which the government is doing nothing about.
Instead, the government continues to hand out 100,000 residence permits a year, about as much as the Reinfeldt government, as Fria Tider reported in detail last summer.
- ‘Every month we get 8-10 students who are illiterate,’ Rita Sommarkrans, SFI teacher in Västerås, said in an interview with SVT this spring .
According to SVT, being illiterate in Sweden is difficult because you cannot pay bills, shop, access information or book a doctor's appointment . However, SVT reports that miracles happen at SFI.
- I didn't know the alphabet, but now I can read and write, claims an Arabic illiterate on SVT during a visit to SFI in Västerås.
