President Trump Issues Warning To John Deere

President Trump warned John Deere Monday he would slap them with a 200% tariff if the company moves some of its manufacturing to Mexico. Trump made the comments while speaking to farmers at a policy roundtable in Smithton, Pennsylvania. “I just noticed behind me John Deere tractors, I know a lot about John Deere. I love the company, but as you know, they announced a few days ago that they’re gonna move a lot of their manufacturing business to Mexico,” Trump said. “I’m just notifying John Deere right now. If you do that, we’re putting a 200% tariff on everything that you want to sell into the United States so that if I win, John Deere is going to be paying 200%,” he continued. “It’s hurting our farmers. It’s hurting our manufacturing,” he added. “If they want to build in the country and the United States, there’s no tariff,” he said. The response was that, thanks to larger farms now operating, total production is actually up but “we are losing the small family farms.” “I know that, yes,” Trump responded somberly. Later, he said, “I am not too worried about the people around this table” supporting him on Election Day, while jokingly adding, “But you never know.” In response to another participant’s concerns about energy production, Trump said he didn’t know that farmers were so energy-dependent. Another farmer talked about Chinese-subsidized businesses, prompting Trump to respond, “That’s why we need tariffs.” After the same farmer finished her comments by praising him profusely, he intoned: “Amen. I agree.” BREAKING: Former President Trump warns John Deere that if the company moves manufacturing to Mexico, he will impose a 200% tariff on the products it imports into the United States. pic.twitter.com/WBkZgVt19Z — Leading Report (@LeadingReport) September 24, 2024 John Deere previously announced it would move the manufacturing of skid steer loaders and compact track loaders to Mexico by 2026. The company is slashing around 280 workers from a plant in East Moline, Illinois, while another 230 employees are being let go at a factory in Davenport, Iowa. About 100 production employees at the company’s Dubuque, Iowa, plant will also be impacted. All layoffs are said to be effective from Aug. 30, the company tells FOX Business. The layoffs are being made due to reduced demand for John Deere’s products from those factories. The company says it generated $10.166 billion in profits last year. “We can confirm Deere leadership recently communicated that rising operational costs and declining market demand requires enterprise-wide changes in how work gets done to achieve our goals and best position the company for the future,” a statement from John Deere reads.
