Teen friends were searching for a friend when they encountered a shadowy figure of a man carrying a briefcase down the street on the sidewalk. What was it that they saw?I received the following account:"Hello. When I was a teen, we called the being we encountered 'Slenderman' when the creepypasta meme legend got popular sometime later, but our experience didn’t fully fit the story. I'm not sure what it was. When I was 16, I was at a friend’s house overnight in Davenport, Iowa near the river. One of our friends had sort of disappeared and it was 11 pm so we figured I and another girl would run across the street to the high school and see if she’d gone back there (we had eaten together on school grounds earlier, so that was our best guess).As my fellow searcher and I stepped out of the house, we saw the tall shadowy figure of a man with a briefcase standing completely still about 200 feet down the sidewalk. The streetlights were bright but not bright enough to make out any further details. She and I looked at each other and went “You see him too right?” We agreed to try finding our friend anyway. We started crossing the street, looked back, and he was suddenly a couple houses closer to us yet still standing motionless. We freaked out and ran back into the house screaming.The girl we went to look for came upstairs from the basement from the commotion, and we were very glad to see her but also rather upset. I have never again jumped headfirst into a couch hard enough to smash my head nor have I run that fast again. Some of the other girls went outside to see if they saw him and came back in instantly freaking out about a shadow figure next to the house.The whole legend of Slenderman got popular a few months later, so we decided that was him and laughed about it. We didn’t sleep that night though. We armed ourselves and barricaded into a bedroom. I’m tearing up now typing this up because it still gives me a primal terror chill.
