25-Year-Old MLS Player Passes Away

Holden Trent, a goalkeeper for the Philadelphia Union, passed away Saturday afternoon. He was 25. “The Philadelphia Union is devastated by the heartbreaking passing of Holden Trent. While he was a wonderful player and fierce competitor, he was more importantly a devoted son, brother, fiancé, and teammate who made those around him better. He embodied the true meaning of determination, dedication and perseverance, and he will be deeply missed. We extend our greatest sympathies to his family, his fiancé, and his friends,” the MLS club said in a statement. “Out of respect to Holden’s friends and family, there will be no further statements at this time and ask that their privacy is respected as they grieve,” it added. pic.twitter.com/FudY65QJjQ — Philadelphia Union (@PhilaUnion) October 26, 2024 “The MLSPA and the entire player community are devastated by the tragic loss of Holden Trent. We are deeply saddened to share that Holden Trent has passed away at 25 years old. May he rest in peace. pic.twitter.com/97MItTiK7z — Philadelphia Union (@PhilaUnion) October 26, 2024 From The Delaware County Daily Times: The Union held a moment of silence and had Trent’s No. 13 jersey on hand before a Union II playoff game at Subaru Park Saturday night. Trent’s alma mater High Point University also had his jersey on the sidelines for its game Saturday. Union II coach Marlon LeBlanc addressed the team with the news about a half-hour before they were due to take the field in an Eastern Conference semifinal. He shared news that Trent was an organ donor and that he’d “gone out a hero,” and used that story to motivate the group, albeit one that wasn’t overly close to Trent, who was several years older than many of the teens on the team. “We didn’t want to make tonight just about Holden, but we wanted to make sure we went out and we honored him,” LeBlanc said after the team advanced in penalty kicks against Charlotte’s reserve team, Crown Legacy. “And I think the guys went out and honored him with the performance.” Trent was taken with the 28th overall pick in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft out of High Point. He did not play in a competitive game for the Union in two years, making the bench eight times this year as an unused sub. He suffered through a hand injury that limited him for three months in the spring. Trent made six appearances for Union II in MLS Next Pro, including just one this season, in June. A cause of death has yet to be announced.
