Blake Shelton Hopes Gwen Stefani Tells Him When To Hang It Up: “Don’t Let Me Twist In The Wind”

Blake Shelton will be the first to admit that he's an aging country music star. The-48-year-old still has plenty of life left to live, but he wants to make sure that he's not overstaying his welcome, so to speak. So during a recent interview with Sirius XM's Highway Mornings with Cody Alan, Shelton explained that his career failsafe is his wife Gwen Stefani. Stefani and Shelton tied the knot back in 2021, and though they come from two different backgrounds and produce two different kinds of music, their relationship just works. Not only does the personal life stuff apparently come easy to them, but they also enjoy working together professionally, as Blake explained: "There's always going to be something with Gwen if I can talk her into it. We love making records together. I don't know how many we've done now, but it's quite a few... We love working together. It's fun, because it's weird, you know? Because it's Gwen Stefani and country guy. It works, it seems like. It works for us anyway." And getting into the specific details of how they "work," Shelton went on to say that they've strangely always had the same vibes musically - as far as what they like to listen to. Despite falling into different genres with their own music, Shelton and Stefani tend to like listening to the same things while they spend time together: "As she and I started getting to know each other back in the day, it wasn't as 'two different worlds' as you would think. She's a California girl, I'm an Oklahoma guy - that's painfully obvious. The rest of it, musically, we've kind of always been on the same page as each other.  We have our things. I'm pretty... I wouldn't say traditional country. Whatever umbrella you would put me under in country music. Then she's the Ska/Pop thing, you know? But as far as the stuff we drive around and listen to, it's kind of always been the same stuff." Sounds like Blake Shelton almost slipped up and called himself pop country? Anyways, Highway Mornings host Cody Alan used that as a transition to ask if the country music singer and the pop star bounce their ideas and new songs off one another. That's when things really got juicy, and Blake admitted that he wants his wife to be honest with him - both from a relational and professional perspective. Shelton apparently played her his new song "Texas" and she loved it. But Blake was very clear that if he really starts to take a turn for the worst music wise, he wants Gwen to be the first to tell him: "I think at this point, for the two of us, our conversations about new music we make, we can't just enjoy it. Because it's like... we're both to the age and to the point in our lives where it's like, 'Hey listen to me. If I start... when this isn't cool anymore, you have to be the one to tell me. Don't let me twist in the wind and (say) people are going to love it.' Then in the meantime, you know it sucks, or you're doing something that's weird. You almost feel like, 'Alright you're only saying you like this because you don't want to hurt my feelings or whatever.' That's kind of what it's turned into. She has heard it all, and she sits there and goes, 'No listen to me. This is great, this is exciting, people are going to love it.'" So apparently "Texas" got the Gwen Stefani stamp of approval. That could be a blessing and a curse if Blake is trying to stay away from pop country stuff though... It is funny to think that Shelton and Stefani are both hoping that they'd let one another know when it's time to hang it up, or at the very least stop trying a certain thing musically. As the "Ol' Red" singer said himself, there are some people in music that don't ever have anyone to check them: "In this business, how many times (have you seen it) where it's like, 'Someone needs to tell so-and-so that they look like a dumbass right now.' Do they not have anybody in their circle - manager or husband or wife - to tell them, 'This is bad. You don't want to go out like this?'"
