I know. I know that’s a lot of things for one movie to be listed up there in that headline. But I don’t know what else to tell you. If the trailer isn’t just full of misdirection and cleverness, The Gorge really looks like a sort of murderous sci-fi romance in which two “highly-trained operatives” (Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy) meet by breaking the no-contact rules while they’re each perched on one side of a very ominous gorge. It’s full of clouds! There are a lot of weapons! Nothing totally weird about this situation!
For some reason they are not supposed to talk, so of course they do, and thus follows an almost rom-com montage in which they play chess at a distance and begin to pine for one another—until something goes terribly wrong. Personally I’m not about to fling myself into an evil gorge after a guy I’ve never actually spoken to face to face, but perhaps that is why I’m not a highly trained operative and Anya Taylor-Joy is.
The words “The Gorge is the door to Hell” are intoned at one point, and it certainly doesn’t seem like there’s anything nice down there. According to the film’s announcement, it’s nothing less than a “cataclysmic threat to humanity.” Can’t wait to find out!
The Gorge is directed by Scott Derrikson (Doctor Strange) and written by Zach Dean (The Tomorrow War). It premieres on Apple TV+ on Valentine’s Day. Isn’t that sweet?[end-mark]
