How a Nation of Beekeepers Protects Pollinators

Beekeeping has been a way of life for Peter Kozmus since he was 14 years old. He had been part of a beekeeping club at school, and when his mentor decided to retire and sell his bee colonies, he jumped at the opportunity. “My dad was a bit surprised,” he laughs, “but luckily he made it possible for me to set up the hive and I’ve been a beekeeper ever since.” Today, Dr. Kozmus is a world-renowned beekeeping expert, vice president of the International Federation of Beekeepers’ Associations Apimondia, head of the breeding program at Slovenian Beekeepers’ Association and what can be best described as a bee diplomat, advocating for bees at home and abroad. It’s a career path that only really makes sense in Slovenia, a Central European country of two million inhabitants, over 11,000 of whom are beekeepers — the highest amount per capita in Europe. With its own indigenous Carniolan honey bee and over 230 years of beekeeping tradition — Anton Janša, the first beekeeping teacher at the Habsburg court, is considered a pioneer of modern beekeeping — Slovenia is a world leader in the field.  Dr. Peter Kozmus can best be described as a bee diplomat. Credit: Amadeja Kmez “Being a small country can be a benefit, because we only have one national beekeepers’ association,” explains Dr. Kozmus, who also serves as chair of the Beekeeping Council at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food. “It makes our relationship with the Ministry a lot more straightforward.” The Slovenian Beekeepers’ Association showed its influence in 2011, when its members started reporting mass bee die-offs and expressed suspicions that neonicotinoids, a class of neurotoxic pesticides that are chemically similar to nicotine, were to blame. The association urged the Ministry of Agriculture to take action, and that same year Slovenia became one of the first European countries to ban their use. As evidence mounted on the negative impact of neonicotinoid pesticides on bees, an EU-wide ban followed in 2018. World Bee Day, which has been celebrated on May 20 since 2018, was also initiated by Slovenia as a way to educate the global public and mobilize support. As Dr. Kozmus explains, “Beekeepers have the problem that the environment is changing in ways that aren’t friendly to bees and other pollinators. We can solve some of these problems ourselves, but for others we need help, and a World Bee Day seemed like the best opportunity and tool to get that.” This year World Bee Day focused on educating young people, which has long been a theme in Slovenia: A third of primary schools have beekeeping clubs like the one that inspired Dr. Kozmus, with over 2,000 children attending this year, and since 2018 beekeeping has also been an elective subject in the national primary school curriculum.

Why Do My Cats Farts Smell Like Eggs? Our Vet Explains

Click to Skip Ahead Causes of Smelly Farts in Cats How to Prevent It Have you ever noticed that your cat’s farts seem to smell like rotten eggs? Is there a way to prevent this unpleasant scent? That rotten egg odor is primarily due to sulfur compounds produced in the digestive process. When cats eat certain foods, especially those rich in fiber or specific types of carbohydrates, their digestion can lead to the production of gases that have a uniquely smelly odor. Causes of Smelly Farts in Cats Cats can have varying amounts of gas accumulate in their digestive systems, and certain factors can play a role in the production of odorous farts. Cats with sensitive digestive systems or food allergies can produce particularly stinky gas. Some cats may have difficulty digesting specific ingredients, leading to gastrointestinal distress and the production of gas. Since cats are obligate carnivores, their digestive system is designed to efficiently process animal protein. So, dairy products, high amounts of carbohydrates or fiber, or low-quality ingredients can cause excess gas and smelly odors. Many adult cats are lactose intolerant, meaning they have difficulty digesting lactose-containing foods properly. As a result, you may notice the unpleasant scent of rotten eggs. Sudden changes in your cat’s diet can lead to digestive upset, which can produce smelly farts. Eating spoiled food can also lead to a more prominent sulfur smell in their flatulence. The microbes living in your cat’s intestinal system can impact the production of gases. A healthy microbiome can digest foods efficiently, thus producing less gas and pungent odor. Dysbiosis, or an imbalance of microbiomes, can produce smellier gas as a by-product of digestion, which is why you may notice a smell similar to that of rotten eggs. Medical conditions, such as infections, inflammatory bowel disease, or intestinal parasites, can upset normal digestion, leading to foul-smelling farts. Other factors can influence flatulence, such as how fast your cat eats. Kitties that quickly gobble down their food can swallow air, which may lead to an excess of gas in their gastrointestinal tract. Image Credit: Jihan Nafiaa Zahri, Shutterstock How to Prevent Your Cat From Having Smelly Farts If your cat’s farts continue to be particularly smelly or occur in addition to vomiting or diarrhea, a checkup with your veterinarian may be worthwhile in order to rule out any underlying medical conditions or dietary indiscretions. It can be particularly useful to help you manage your cat’s diet and ensure a healthy digestive tract. Dietary changes to include more high-quality protein depending on your cat’s age, health, and lifestyle can reduce excessive gas. All new diets should be slowly transitioned over a period of 7 to 10 days to prevent digestive upset. The addition of a species-specific probiotic can contribute to a healthy microbiome. Serving smaller, more frequent meals daily can also help digestion more than a single large meal. Play and exercise can help your cat’s digestive system move along more efficiently. Aim for two 15-minute sessions per day. Image Credit: slawomir.gawryluk, Shutterstock Conclusion Farts with foul smells resembling rotten eggs in cats can be attributed to various factors, such as their dietary choices, food intolerances or allergies, the condition of their microbiome, and their eating habits. Once you understand these factors, you can take appropriate steps to reduce stinky and potentially embarrassing odors from your cat. Apple Vision Pro 2 with M5 chip and cheaper price could launch in 2025

Apple Vision Pro 2 is expected to arrive in late 2025. At least, this is what Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes. In a post on Medium, the tech analyst says Cupertino is preparing mass production of this device in the second semester of next year. The top change of this spatial computer will be a processor upgrade, from the M2 chip to the unannounced M5 processor. Kuo says this will "significantly improve computing power and ensure the best Apple Intelligence user experience." However, the analyst notes that the outside of the device won't change much. Still, this "should help lower costs and price points." Recently, rumors revealed that Apple plans to introduce a cheaper version of Apple Vision Pro with a lower-resolution display. Even so, it seems this model won't launch in the next two to three years. Regarding Apple Vision Pro 2, Ming-Chi Kuo says the "biggest design challenge for Vision Pro is the human-machine interface needs to be more intuitive," and the new M5 processor will improve generative AI features significantly. Even if Apple doesn't change this spatial computer price, he believes "cost and price reductions, weight, and battery life improvements will eventually happen." The analyst thinks Apple Intelligence will be key for this M5 Apple Vision Pro, which can integrate "something like OpenAI's Sora" to " elevate "the user experience of the head-mounted device to unimaginable levels. The impact of text-to-video AI models on the head-mounted display device experience will likely be more impressive than on existing mainstream consumer electronics. Other rumors previously expected a new Apple Vision Pro iteration to become available a few years from now. However, if the main change is a processor upgrade, this could make Apple release a second-generation faster than anticipated. Below, you can learn more about this spatial computer and all of its features.
