The Dallas Observer — a digital site with a weekly print edition — published an item Tuesday hilariously claiming two ads (here and here) by Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) were misleading in claims about his Democratic opponent and Congressman Colin Allred’s (D-TX) support for men being allowed in girls’ bathrooms, locker rooms, and sports. The piece broke down in two parts. The first fixated on an ad with the announcer stating “Colin Allred opposed protecting women’s sports,” and “Colin Allred voted to allow boys in girls’ sports.” In a section entitled “THE FACTS,” news editor Kelly Dearmore noted these claims were made with footnotes below for a House Republican-led bill in 2023: In the commercial, House Resolution 734 from 2023 is noted under both of these claims. Named “The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2023,” HR 734 passed the House of Representatives along a party line vote of 219 Republican “yeas” to 203 Democratic “nays.” The bill aimed to place a ban on transgender students from participating on a team based on their current gender identity. Of course, he noted this “was roundly opposed by Democratic officials and progressive advocacy groups,” but gave a cartoonish explanation for why. He argued it failed to “tak[e] into account competitive levels, grade levels or particular sports” and that President Biden would veto it. After a Hummer-sized paragraph touting the White House statement opposing it on the grounds of it exacerbating “a nationwide mental health crisis” for “transgender youth” and thus push many already “seriously consider[ing] suicide.” Ah, yes. The tiresome excuse of supporting men taking over women’s sports out of a fear of mass suicides. But, wait, there was more. Dearmore did what liberal journalists so often do in explaining away far left position in being weirdly obtuse: “Allred hasn’t stated on the record that he does not want to protect women’s sports or that he wants to allow boys into girls sports. He voted against HR 734 and its sweeping ban, something that more than 200 other Democrats in the U.S. House did as well.” The second part unfolded in the same manner. An ad’s narrator said “Colin Allred voted to allow boys in girls’ bathrooms,” and “Colin Allred voted to allow boys in girls’ locker rooms.” As per our friends at National Review, the Equality Act would have, in fact, done just that, but Dearmore chose not to mention that. Dearmore acknowledged the Cruz ad was bolstered by a footnote of Allred’s yes vote for the House Democrat-shepherded Equality Act in 2021. He again gave a long runway for a charitable reading of the bill: “This bill prohibits discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity in areas including public accommodations and facilities, education, federal funding, employment, housing, credit, and the jury system,” reads a summary of the act on Congress’s official website. “Specifically, the bill defines and includes sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity among the prohibited categories of discrimination or segregation.” Conservatives decried the passage as an attack on religious freedom and far too sweeping in favor of transgender citizens. Earth to Dearmore: What do you think “public accommodations and facilities” mean? Noting Allred was “an original co-sponsor,” Dearmore added Allred said in a statement he supported the bill not to put men in girls’ bathrooms, changing rooms, and sports, but rather so that “no American” could “be discriminated against because of who they are or who they love” and “LGBTQ Americans” being able to “live” with “protections under federal law.” What Dearmore conveniently left out was Allred’s support of The Transgender Bill of Rights resolution, which would give transgender students the right to choose without any discussion the locker room and teams of their choosing. Dearmore saved the dumbest line for last: In short, Allred didn’t vote to “allow boys into girls’ sports” or to “allow boys into girls’ locker rooms,” but rather to secure civil rights protections for LGBTQ citizens, according to his on-record statements regarding the bill. Is Dearmore sore? He must be from the grossly painful contortions he twisted himself into for this logic to pan out.

A terrifying video shows a crazy incident in which an ATV driver smashes into a pedestrian at a San Francisco gas station as police officers look on. The incident occurred all the way back in February, and a suspect was just arrested, authorities said.On the night of Feb. 11 — the same day as Super Bowl LVIII between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers — Ariel Cruz went to the convenience store at a Gulf gas station following the game. However, a group of men driving dirt bikes and an ATV confronted Cruz. 'I just remember my head was split open.'Both the group and Cruz were taunting each other. KPIX-TV reported that officers with the Stunt Driving Response Unit were called to the gas station to tow a vehicle in connection with a separate case. After cops arrived, they attempted to quell the situation by yelling at both parties, but things only escalated. The dirt bike riders and the ATV rider began circling the gas pumps, driving recklessly, and struck one of the officers in the face. The ATV driver ran over Cruz, who was wearing a red 49ers jersey. "I just remember my head was split open. I had staples in my head. My knee was really inflamed. I couldn't walk on it," Cruz told KTVU-TV. "My lip was busted on the inside and outside. I had like a slash on my lip." Cruz told the San Francisco Standard that he suffered a concussion and couldn’t walk for more than a month, which left him unable to do his work as a painter.The suspect ditched the ATV at the crime scene and fled on a dirt bike with a different male driving it. On Tuesday, the San Francisco Police Department announced that they arrested a suspect believed to be the ATV rider. The San Francisco Police Department General Work Detail with the assistance of the Community Violence Reduction Team investigated the incident that led to the arrest of 31-year-old Julian Alberto Ulloagomez on Aug. 29. Ulloagomez was booked at Ingleside Police Station on charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, and filing a false police report.Jail records show Ullagomez remains in custody without bond. He's scheduled for an Oct. 15 court appearance."While these investigations can take time due to varying factors, investigators continue to work tirelessly to investigate and follow up on these incidents," the San Francisco Police Department said in a statement. "SFPD does not tolerate this dangerous behavior and reckless drivers, of any vehicle, will be held accountable."Cruz said of the arrest, "I was happy about it, because like that day … next day … [it] could have been someone else's son. Very appreciative that they found him." The incident is still under investigation. Democratic vice presidential nominee Governor Tim Walz's Minnesota State Library Services plans to hold a BIPOC-only — "black, indigenous, people of color" — retreat for library workers next month, according to documents obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.The upcoming event aims to "help library workers connect with other BIPOC staff," according to a pre-conference event agenda. The Minnesota State Library Services will cover the attendees' lodging, meals, and other costs.'Specifically for BIPOC library workers of Minnesota.'According to the news outlet, a sign-up form for the conference allows interested attendee applicants to select their race and sexuality, which notably excluded "white" and "heterosexual.""Join the Minnesota State Library Services BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) Library Advisory Group for a day of professional development and network-building designed specifically for BIPOC library workers of Minnesota," reads the event's virtual registration form obtained by DNCF.The agenda obtained by the outlet revealed that Nicole Cooke, a library and information science professor at the University of South Carolina, is one of the event's planned keynote speakers. Earlier this year, Cooke received an award for "improv[ing] diversity in librarianship," according to an announcement from the university."As a professor, I've had students who never had an educator of color. But South Carolina, where most of our graduates work after graduating, is filled with diverse communities," Cooke stated. "I would not be doing my job well if I did not prepare these students to best serve the communities where they will likely work. That means first educating them about diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice issues."Cooke has said that she experienced "microaggression and racism" first-hand from other colleagues and patrons throughout her career. She received a grant in 2017 to study "racial microaggressions in libraries," the DNCF reported.She has previously claimed that it would be "tantamount to malpractice" to send students into the workforce without first educating them on DEI.Minnesota State Library Services' director, Tamara Lee, has also expressed her commitment to advancing "racial equity in libraries," according to her LinkedIn profile, the DCNF reported. She previously co-wrote a piece about ensuring "racially diverse, equitable, and inclusive" story times for children.
