Hurricane Helene is expected to increase in strength as it approaches Florida, bringing with it dangerous storm surges, flooding, and torrential rain. The National Hurricane Center said Thursday morning that Helene is expected to move across the eastern Gulf of Mexico and cross Florida’s Big Bend coast later in the evening or early Friday morning. Currently a Category 2 hurricane, Helene is expected to increase in power before it slams into Florida.  “Additional strengthening is forecast, and Helene is expected to be a major hurricane when it reaches the Florida Big Bend coast this evening,” the National Hurricane Center announced. “Weakening is expected after landfall, but Helene’s fast forward speed will allow strong, damaging winds, especially in gusts, to penetrate well inland across the southeastern United States, including over the higher terrain of the southern Appalachians.” After landfall, Helene is expected to go northwestward and head toward the Tennessee Valley on Friday and Saturday.  Authorities are warning Floridians about a “life-threatening storm surge” that “will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline.” In some areas of Florida, like from Carrabelle to Suwannee River, the surge could produce a wall of water 20 feet high. Other areas could get surges as high as 15 feet, while Tampa Bay is expected to see a surge of somewhere between 5-8 feet.  “Persons located within these areas should take all necessary actions to protect life and property from rising water and the potential for other dangerous conditions,” the National Hurricane Center said. “Promptly follow evacuation and other instructions from local officials.” Florida Republican Senator Rick Scott warned Floridians on Wednesday that the storm surge could be deadly. “In the Big Bend, they’re talking about possibly 18-foot of storm surge,” he said. “I’m a little over 6 feet — that’s three times my height. Helene is also predicted to bring heavy rainfall over portions of the Southeastern United States and the Southern Appalachians, with rain totals expected to be between six to 12 inches, with isolated areas getting around 18 inches.  “This rainfall will likely result in catastrophic and potentially life-threatening flash and urban flooding, along with significant river flooding. Numerous landslides are expected in steep terrain across the southern Appalachians,” the National Hurricane Center warned.  Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency in 61 of Florida’s 67 counties, pointing people to get current guidance from Florida’s disaster management division.  “Florida is preparing for widespread impacts from Hurricane Helene,” DeSantis said. Wednesday. “Do not get wedded to the ‘cone,’ as hazards such as tornados, flooding, and storm surge can create dangerous conditions far beyond the cone.”

A new Gallup poll states that a number of issues favor Republicans in the 2024 election, chief among them the fact that more Americans identify as Republicans than Democrats. In an average of Gallup polls taken between July and September, 48% of voters surveyed either identified as Republicans or leaned Republican, while 45% of the voters identified as Democrats or leaned Democrat. 46% of voters thought that the GOP was better able to handle the most important problem facing the country, as opposed to 41% who chose the Democrats. Gallup listed the issues that voters thought were most important as the economy and immigration. 50% of voters deemed the GOP better equipped to keep America prosperous, while 46% thought the Democrats would do the job better. A whopping difference came between the 54% of voters who thought the GOP was better able to keep America safe from international threats and the 40% who chose the Democrats. Other indications favoring the GOP could be derived from voter disaffection with Democrats and the Biden-Harris administration. Only 22% of voters said they were currently satisfied with the state of affairs; only 39% expressed approval of the job President Biden and his administration have done, and the economic index had a -28 score. The economic index rating is “derived from the 22% of Americans describing current economic conditions as ‘excellent’ or ‘good’ versus the 48% saying they are ‘poor,’ and the 32% believing the economy is ‘getting better’ versus the 62% saying it is ‘getting worse,’” Gallup pointed out. Democrats have led in party affiliation since the age of Ronald Reagan except for 2004, a Gallup graph showed. Gallup stated, “Republicans previously have not had an outright advantage in party affiliation during the third quarter of a presidential election year. Gallup noted, “Democrats have won presidential elections in years in which they had larger-than-normal advantages in party affiliation, including 1992, 1996, 2008, 2012 and 2020. In years when the advantage was narrower — 2004 and 2016, for example — Republicans won in the electoral college if not also the popular vote.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) slammed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky this week after Zelensky was accused of interfering in U.S. elections to the benefit of the Democrat Party by touring an ammunition plant in the key swing state of Pennsylvania. Johnson pointed the finger at Zelensky’s ambassador to the United States, who is said to have organized the trip. “I demand that you immediately fire Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States, Oksana Markarova,” Johnson said in a letter to Zelensky. “As you have said, Ukrainians have tried to avoid being ‘captured by American domestic politics,’ and ‘influencing the choices of the American people’ ahead of the November election,” Johnson said. “Clearly that objective was abandoned this week when Ambassador Markarova organized an event in which you toured an American manufacturing site.” “The facility was in a politically contested battleground state, was led by a top political surrogate for Kamala Harris, and failed to include a single Republican because — on purpose — no Republicans were invited,” Johnson continued. Polls currently show former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris neck and neck in the state, which is home to the second-largest population of Ukrainian Americans in the U.S. at more than 122,000 people as of 2022. “The tour was clearly a partisan campaign event designed to help Democrats and is clearly election interference,” Johnson said. “This shortsighted and intentionally political move has caused Republicans to lose trust in Ambassador Markarova’s ability to fairly and effectively serve as a diplomat in this country. She should be removed from her post immediately.” Johnson said that all countries should stay out of opining on or interfering in U.S. domestic policies and that by Zelensky doing so when he attacked Sen. He toured the factory with Governor Josh Shapiro (D), Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA), and Rep. Matt Cartwright (D-PA). Zelensky’s trip to the plant came after he attacked Vance in an interview with the New Yorker before making the trip to the U.S. “My feeling is that Trump doesn’t really know how to stop the war even if he might think he knows how,” he said. “With this war, oftentimes, the deeper you look at it the less you understand.” Zelensky said that Vance was “too radical” because he believes that Ukraine must “make a sacrifice” by losing some of its territory to bring its war with Russia to an end. He said that he does not take Vance’s words seriously, but that his experience with Trump has been different, because Trump has pledged his support for Ukraine.
